An Ounce of PreventionCooler weather signals the start of
cold and flu season. We may thoroughlywash our hands only to contaminatethem again by touching a germydoorknob, light switch, keyboard, phoneor remote. Taking a few minutesregularly to clean these householdsurfaces with disinfectant wipes couldhelp stave off a nasty bug.

Boosting the Bondsof Friendship
What’s the best way to havefriends? Be one. Studies indicate thatsocial relationships improve emotionaland physical health, so friendships arewell worth nurturing. Here are sometips for boosting your bonds with yourbest buddies:
Make friends a priority. In thehubbub of daily life, spending timewith friends often gets shunted to thebottom of the to-do list. Program yourfriends’ numbers into your phone soit’s easy to call them when you have a
few spare minutes. Face time matters, too, so schedule regular lunches orevenings out.
Pay attention. When you’re seeingyour friend in person, maintain eyecontact and don’t interrupt her. Whentalking on the phone, don’t check youremail or watch TV. She’ll notice thatyou’re distracted.
Simply listen. Sometimes friendsjust want a sympathetic ear, so holdoff on doling out advice. If your friendasks your opinion, however, feel freeto give it.
Give and take. Be sensitive to howmuch time and support a friend canoffer you, and respect her boundaries.Likewise, you don’t have to constantlybe available to a friend who drainsyour energy.
Laugh it up. Sending your friendhumorous emails and text messageslets her know you’re thinking of herand brightens her day.

Summon the Sandman SoonerAfter tossing and turning and
counting sheep, many people turn toover-the-counter sleep aids to drift offto dreamland. But if sleeping pillsleave you groggy in the morning, thinkabout introducing one or more ofthese shut-eye enhancers into yourbedtime ritual:
Noise machines. The sweetsounds of a rain shower, ocean wavesor the rain forest help tune out othersounds that can disrupt sleep. Adjustthe volume to a level that’s soothingand not distracting.
Sleep-sound apps. If you own asmartphone, you can download one ofthe many sleep-sound apps availableto lull you into slumber without a heftyprice tag.
Ear plugs. If noise is your nemesiswhen it comes to snoozing, ear plugseffectively block out backgroundsounds.
Eye masks. Too much light candisrupt quality sleep, even if it’s justfrom the glow of a nightlight or alarmclock. Wear a comfortable eye maskto see if complete darkness makes adifference in your sleeping patterns.
Calming colors. If your bedroom isdecorated in loud hues, it may hinderyour ability to fall asleep. Create acalming environment in soft blues orwarm, neutral shades.
Remember, relying on doodads todoze off does not replace the need forhealthy sleeping habits. Sweetdreams!
