For Alumni, Families and Friends

One of America’s Top 50 Catholic

High Schools

Fulfilling the promise to educate students in Spirit, Heart, Mind

and Body.

For more than 50 years, Bishop Car-roll has been providing a faith-based

education that encourages excellence in spirit, heart, mind and body for every student. So often, we hear from alumni of all eras how attending Bishop Carroll made a profound impact on their lives:

1964 alum: “Bishop Carroll provided structured learning and discipline in con-cert with my parents’ beliefs in character building and confidence for a good outlook on life.”

1970 alum: “BC gave me a tremendous sense of pride and confidence due to the higher academic standards. It also instilled a sense of discipline in my life that helped me achieve my goals and dreams.”

1981 alum: “While I had 4 great years of friendships, sports and laughter, BC quietly infused respect, high morals and a strong work ethic into my being.”

With thousands of alumni, students, and parents offering similar testimony, it is clear that Bishop Carroll offers a unique option for a high school education that can’t be found anywhere else in Cambria County and the surrounding region.

Fulfilling a Growing DemandWith a total enrollment of 250 students and 60 more incoming freshmen, Bishop Carroll continues to grow.

In fact, Catholic schools are thriving nationwide and yielding exceptional re-sults. The national Catholic school gradu-ation rate is 99.4%, and of these graduates, 84.9% go on to college, compared to just 39.5% of public high school graduates. Combined with a longstanding legacy and tradition, the future is promising for Catholic education and for Bishop Carroll.

Making an Impact on Our Community TodayWe are humbled by the support we receive and the progress we’ve made. Our students are exemplifying our pillars of Spirit, Heart, Mind and Body each and every day. Alumni, families, businesses and the com-munity provide steadfast support.

BC students make headlines for their achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership. In addition, we hear from both students and parents that they’re thankful for the opportunities they receive at Bishop Carroll and the sol-id foundation we provide for the future. Students benefit from faith formation, high academic standards, a values-based education and a safe school environment. They gain the skills to make an impact on their faith community, the community and the world.

We need your help year after year to keep our momentum going. We are dedicated to keeping a quality Catholic high school education option available to families in our area, but we can’t do it alone.

As a private Catholic school receiving limited financial help from the diocese, we rely on the annual generosity of alumni, vol unteers, parents and com-munity members to keep our school operating year after year. Bishop Carroll will continue to grow and fill a critical, growing need in our community with your continued support. See our honor roll of donors on page 2.

With the close of the 2014-2015 school year, we are truly inspired by the achieve-

ments of our students in all four pillars and the lasting impact they have made on the greater community around them .

We invite you to celebrate these incred-ible young people for all they’ve accom-plished. They’ve achieved much more than we could possibly include, but here are a few great examples .

The Joy of Giving

This year, our students brought joy to senior

citizens at the Ebensburg Senior Activities Center, residents at Rebekah Manor, and students at Skills . Students lifted the spirits of these individuals through holiday traditions, including singing Christmas carols and coloring Easter eggs . During Christmas, each homeroom also purchased gifts for families in need, and we sent nearly 4,000 cards to our troops overseas . Homerooms purchased gifts for families in

The greatest among you will be your servant. Matthew 23:11

On Husky Hill, faith and service is a top priority . Students attend monthly masses and take part as readers, singers, musicians and servers . Students in all grades participate in weekly religion classes .

Students also have the opportunity to get involved in the school ministry program and to teach CCD at local parishes . Through our service requirements and a strong culture of giving and volunteerism, our students contribute over 6,000 hours of service to the church and our local community .

Bishop Carroll News • Summer 2015 9

While our campus boasts a rich his-tory, many of the facilities are no

different today than they were in 1962 and are in need of a major upgrade.

As one of the nation’s top 50 Catho-lic high schools, Bishop Carroll offers a competitive curriculum; it is es-sential that we upgrade our learning environment to match. Renovations to the library and science labs will pre-pare students for the collaborative and technology-based learning environments they’ll encounter in college and in the workforce.

Library Upgrade to Promote Collaborative Learning and Model a College EnvironmentOur renovation plans include the trans-formation of the library into a media cen-ter with technology stations for research and writing, meeting areas and open space for individual and group work.

“Gone are the days where you go into a library and check books out,” said Lorie Ratchford, Principal.

The library no longer serves as a tra-ditional place for research or even a pri-mary source for reading materials. Today,

students are permitted to download books and read them on their tab-lets during study halls, and they are accessing information in a variety of other ways thanks to technologi-cal developments.

“It’s the day and age where you have to repurpose areas,” said Lorie. “We’re going to utilize the current library space so that students can work indepen-dently or in groups to facilitate learning. The goal for the library is to make it a comfortable space that is conducive to independent and collaborative work.”

“It will be more of a college type setting,” she continued. “The traditional library concept of going in and being quiet is archaic. We want kids to use the library to participate in group learn-ing by sharing ideas, working together, and utilizing tech-nology.”

Bishop Carroll is fortunate to have many alumni who have gone into the fields of library science. “We’re hop-ing to ask them to come in to help us determine what is useful and what is not anymore,” said Lorie.

Science Lab Upgrades to Provide Safe Space and Equipment for Hands-On LearningWith many BC students interested in entering science and health-related fields, it’s vital that we provide a learning environment equal to or above that of other schools in the area, and one that will prepare them for higher education.

While our current labs allow students to complete the required course material, they were designed more than 60 years ago.

“So much has changed since then,” said Lorie. “Materials have changed, as has the venting and plumbing. We have safety measures we have to meet for each and every lab, and updated labs will help ensure all of those requirements are met.”

Renovation plans include updates to the workstations, upgrades to utilities like plumbing, electricity, water and new equipment.

Labs are a fundamental part of the science curriculum, as they allow stu-dents to engage in hands-on learning.

“Our long term goal is to have to have a newer space for the kids to be able to do their experiments and dissect animals,” said Lorie. “We want to make sure that our students have equipment and a safe space that can accommodate anatomy, physics, biology, chemistry, zoology and more.”

Take a Sneak Peek at the New School Renderings!

We’d like to thank all alumni, friends and community members who

have established scholarships to help more local students afford a high-quality, faith-based education at Bishop Carroll. See below for more information on the most recently established scholarships as well as a full list of awards available to current and prospective students.

Attention Class of 1964! A classmate of yours, Paul Malchesky, has established a Named Scholarship in honor of the living and deceased members of the Class of 1964. Paul established this schol-arship with the hope that other members of the Class of 1964 would be encouraged to continue to support Catholic education at your beloved alma mater. Two scholarships will be awarded for the 15-16 school year, and the balance will be placed in a restricted account to go towards future scholarships. As the scholarship fund grows each year, you have the potential to help fund more and more scholarships. The more donors contributing to the fund, the bigger your impact will be on future Bishop Carroll students. Each gift helps make Catholic education possible for students who may otherwise not be able to afford it. The scholarships will be awarded to stu-dents according to their financial need and desire for a Catholic education. Awardees are expected to complete their education at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School. If you are a member of the Class of 1964 and would like to contribute to your Named Scholarship, simply mark “Named Scholarship 1964” on your contribution envelope. We thank Paul greatly for this thought-ful gesture on behalf of the future students of BCCHS. May God bless him and all of the members of the Class of 1964!

Attention Class of 1968!Several members of the class of 1968 have established a Named scholarship in honor of their classmates both living and deceased. Six students will be helped with

a Class of 1968 Scholarship this year. If you wish to add to this fund please mark your gift.

Attention Class of 1973!The class of 1973 also contributed a Named Scholarship from their 40th reunion. It can be extended by contributions from the class of 1973 by writing “Class 1973 Named Scholarship” on your envelope.

A New Scholarship!A new scholarship for the 2015-16 school year was also established in memory of Dennis Eckerd ’80 by his brother Steven ’79.

Bishop Carroll News • Summer 2015 11

Recent graduate, Nikolas Suckinos ’15, was one of three students to re-

ceive the Matthew 25 Youth Humanitar-ian Award at Catholic Charities’ Annual Recognition Dinner held on June 3. Nik, nominated by Mr. Nagy, is known for his generosity, positive attitude and high level of involvement in the school and community.

“Nik has definitely left a lasting im-print at Bishop Carroll,” said Mr. Nagy. “He has set some high precedents for others to follow.”

At Bishop Carroll, Nik volunteered his time and talents for the Student Council, SADD club, National Honor So-ciety and Student Ambassadors—while

maintaining his commitment to academics and athletics. In his spare time, Nik has volunteered countless hours at soup kitch-ens, SKILLS and various nurs-ing homes and senior centers.

“Nik gives freely of his time, treasure and especially his talent without the thought of reward or recognition,” Mr. Nagy stated. “He works diligently at every task he under-

takes and with every group he supports.”

This bright, compassionate individual has been a leader throughout his time at BC, rallying students and faculty to par-ticipate in worthy causes, including the Adopt a Family program at Christmas, the Jeans for Teens program and more.

“Students like Nik and the other award winners will be great Catholic leaders in their adult lives, just as they are now as young adults,” Mr. Nagy stated firmly. “I wish more people today shared their spirit. They give me hope that the future of our church is strong.”

Congratulations, Nik!

Current Chairwoman of the Cambria County Republican Committee and

a member of the borough council serving on Water, Wastewater & Storm Water Committee and Street Committee, Bishop Carroll graduate, Cecilia Houser ’05, credits Bishop Carroll for giving her an early boost in her political career.

“As a junior at BC, I served as Ebens-burg Borough Council’s junior council woman, a non-voting member of council who serves as the young people’s voice on council,” said Cecilia.

It was this experience, as well as her BC education, that shaped Cecilia’s desire to serve her community. “I knew after serving as junior council woman I would definitely want to be involved in my community on the level of public servant someday in the future,” stated Cecilia.

She ran for office for the first time

at the age of 21, after Mayor Moyer an-nounced he would not run for re-elec-tion. Cecilia worked hard to show the community she would take her position seriously and be a voice for them. “Elec-tion night came and went, and despite my hard work, I still lost” Cecilia said. “I didn’t let this discourage me.”

She later interned with the Repub-lican Party of PA, then worked for the PAGOP on Governor and Senate Races while also working at Bishop Carroll as The Public Relations and Development Director. She then became the PA State Director for American Majority, a non-partisan non-profit group.

“I was just elected Chairwoman of the Cambria County Republican Com-mittee,” Cecilia said proudly. “I’m the youngest since the mid-20th century.”

Cecilia’s advice to BC students? “Become

active in your community and your church,” she reminds them. “You’ll be sur-prised how many aspects of your life it will help, how good you’ll feel, and the friends you’ll meet. Most importantly, remember that you’re never too young to make a difference. If you’re passionate about something, go for it! Don’t let your age or gender deter you from making a difference whether it’s small or large. In the words of one of my favorite people, Fred Rodgers, ‘Life is for Service.’”

St. Francis Scholarship Open to BC Students!

Husky News & Awards

For Bishop Carroll students who’ve been accept-ed to St. Francis, there’s a great opportunity to

receive an endowed scholarship! The scholarship was set up by his father, but Dr. Philip M. Woo, Jr., DMD has made BC students a first preference as recipients. Graduates of high schools in Cambria County will be a second preference. Students must maintain a 3.25 GPA, be enrolled in the School of Business and demonstrate financial need. Past BC students benefiting from this scholarship include Matt Bassaro ’08 and Brad Dressler ’13. For information on how to apply, students can visit the guidance office.

Cruising with BC A request for another Bishop Carroll Alumni Cruise has been made.

A cruise to New England/Canada is being planned for September 10-17, 2016, on Carnival Sunshine. We need a minimum of 36 for bus transportation provided by Lodestar from Johnstown to New York Pier. If we secure fewer than 36, the cost will be higher. The price of the cruise will be determined once cabins are blocked.

If the minimum number is not met, another option would be to go on Lodestar’s scheduled cruise, September 3-10, 2016. Prices begin at $910 per person for interior cabins for that cruise.

If you are interested in either trip, contact Susie at 814-472-7893 or [email protected] or Mary at 814-472-8622 or [email protected] by Sept. 30, 2015.

Class of ’85 Reunites! The Class of 1985 gathered July 17 for a casual night out at PJ’s Tavern in Cresson. On Saturday, July 18, they celebrated 4 p.m. Mass at the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel, Loretto and afterwards enjoyed a dinner and dance at the Loretto Legion. Their special guest was Mr. Ray Seymour!
