8Sicily. Syracuse. Thoinon and Sosistratos, 278 BC. ¿ 60 Litrae - Dekadrachm. 4.22 gms. ΣYPAKoΣIΩNN, grain-wreathed head of Kore-Persephone left, wearing pendant earring and pearl necklace, bee behind, rev. Nike in bigagalloping right, earring (sometimes described as a moon) above, Θ below horse’s foreleg; the name E∏I IKETA has beenerased from the die in the exergue. Buttrey Morgantina 5-R, SNG Klagenfurt 523, SNG Munich 1292, Egger26.11.09.271 (this coin?). Very rare. During the violent power struggles and turbulence in Sicily following Maenon’sassassination of Agathokles, the people of Syracuse appointed Hiketas their general and protector. For nine years he ruled astyrant, but in 278 BC at the river Terias, he suffered a severe defeat at the hands of the Carthaginians. As a result, he wasexpelled from Syracuse by Thoinon, one of his officers. Thoinon, though, was soon after attacked by Sosistratos, a tyrant ofAkragas and the city teetered on civil war. But when Carthaginian forces fresh from seizing Akragas besieged Syracuse,Thoinon and Sosistratos entered a truce while sending a plea for aid to the Epirote Pyrrhos. After landing his army in Sicily,Pyrrhos lifted the siege. To prevent further strife there, he had Thoinon executed and forced Sosistratos to flee. Before Pyrrhosarrived, Thoinon faced with civil war and foreign invasion, would likely have had no time to produce new coin dies. Thus thedies prepared for Hiketas were used, with his name hastily effaced from the reverse - as in the above example. Some evidenceof reverse die rust. Good Very Fine.

May 51 (A43/P46), Dewing 1250 (same dies). In 541 BC, citizens of Teosfleeing the Persian yoke that had fallen on Ionia, came to the site of Abdera, opposite the island of Thasos. The refugees’ settlementefforts were successful (unlike the earlier attempt by the Klazomenians which failed in 656 BC), and Abdera was founded. Thecoinage of their homeland, Teos used the griffin as a symbol. Now, that would be adapted here. At the beginning of the 6thCentury, the prolific Thracian silver mines were firing up, and the city of Abdera like its’ island neighbor Thasos was wellpositioned to enjoy the benefits. Production of the chunky silver Oktadrachm began within a decade of Abdera’s founding.Oktadrachm and Tetradrachm became the staple coins of Abdera. Not coins for everyday transactions, they were for large scaletrade and large scale payments. Very Fine.

Haunting Portrait of Hermes

AINION, Goat standing right, wreath before, all within shallow incuse square.May, Ainos Group LVI (dies not recorded), AMNG II 328, Dewing 1273. In one of his works, the ancient Cyrene poetKallimachos writes that the sculptor Epeios who built the Trojan Horse also made a wood statue of Hermes. But ‘the swollenScamander’ swept it away to sea. It was found by fishermen on the Hebros River. Believing it naught but driftwood, they triedto burn it on their warming fire. When it refused to burn, they threw it back into the waters. Ptolemy IV, whose epithet not surprisingly is Philopator, struck an extensive series ofOktadrachm honoring his father, Ptolemy III. On them the father is given divine attributes: radiate diadem for Helios, aegisfor Zeus and trident for Poseidon. The purpose here being to show that Ptolemy III was master of the three Elements - Heaven,Earth and Sea. While Ptolemy IV may have idolized his father, his filial affection certainly didn’t extend to his mother. Adrunken, vice-ridden ruler and devotee of orgiastic religious rites, Ptolemy IV ushered in his feeble reign by arranging themurder of his mother — Berenike II, and his uncle and brother. 56Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy V Epiphanes (205-180 BC). ¡ Tetradrachm, struck ca. 202-200 BC. Military mint in Phoenicia.14.20 gms. Diademed and draped bust of his father Ptolemy IV right, rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ∏TOΛEMAIoY, Eagle standing lefton thunderbolt, NI between legs. Svoronos 1270 (same reverse dies), Mørkholm , Portrait, Group XII (A14/P31), BMC74 (same dies). Amid the succession of increasingly stereotyped depictions of dynastic founder Ptolemy I, the portrait issues of thechild-king Ptolemy V are quite distinct within the Egyptian series. Mørkholm argues cogently that most, if not all, of these typeswere struck at Phoenician mints - most of the hoards have been found in the region, while many of the types have been die-linkedwith mint issues of Sidon. The die-linkages point to a limited period of issue, for a few years after 202 BC, the time in whichPtolemy V was fighting a losing war to save his Phoenician territories from the armies of the Seleukid Antiochos III, the Great.Very minor area of flat strike on obverse. The designs ofthis coin celebrate Kroton’s importance as guardian of the famed sanctuary of Hera Lakinia on the nearby Lakinian promotory, and mark Herakles as the city’s founder. This may appear to be a somewhat quixotic juxtaposition as Hera, Herakles’ stepmother, ever jealous and vengeful of her husband Zeus, tried to prevent Herakles’ birth when he lay in the womb of his mother Alcmene.Unsuccessful she later sent two serpents to kill the infant Herakles as he lay in his cot. The divine child hero quickly dispatchedthe serpents. When he grew to adulthood, Herakles was constantly beset by Hera’s intrigues, ploys and plots while he was on hismany quests. Some myths, though, tell us that ultimately the two became friends after Herakles rescued Hera from being ravishedby the giant Porphyrion. The Temple of Hera Lakinia possessed a painting of the goddess Hera executed by the renowned artistZeuxis. According to local lore, Zeuxis had the five most beautiful girls of Kroton at the time sit as models for his painting.Reverse somewhat off center losing head of Herakles. These coin types are often hampered by poor die work, die wear orcorrosion. This immaculate example here suffers from none of these ills, and is of flawless metal quality and superb lateClassical style. It offers perhaps one of the finest known depictions of Hera, the majestic and solemn wife of Zeus. ChoiceExtremely Fine. A similar example, not quite as nice as this, sold for $35,000 in the 2012 Gemini Sale.

These early Ionian coins were an attempt to standardize metal weightand prevent counterfeiting by proving metal quality through the incuse punch which would appear to expose part of the core. This technique obviously failed as contemporary counterfeiters just plated in and over the punch. Perhaps one of the earliestknown fourrées. Good Very Fine.

Intriguing Kyrene Silphium Seed Drachm – “the Love Coin”
125Kyrenaica. Kyrene. ¡ Drachm, ca. 500-480 BC. 3.30 gms. Two heart-shaped silphium fruits (seed pods) top ends facingside by side, two pellets between, rev. Heart-shaped silphium fruit (seed pod), pellet above, within incuse square. BMC 18,SNG Copenhagen 1165. Around 630 BC, the Greek island of Thera was beset by drought and overpopulation. Escapingthe resultant famine, Theran settlers led by one Battus sailed south. On the north coast of Africa, near modern Benghazi, they built the city of Kyrene. Exploring the area’s coastal plain, the settlers found the silphium plant, a rare relative of celeryand fennel. The plant was most prized for its pregnancy-preventing properties and was for centuries a popular contraceptivethroughout the ancient world. For centuries, there was also a close association between the silphium plant and human love.As the silphium could only be cultivated on the small coastal region by Kyrene, it brought the city great wealth.Unfortunately, it was overharvested and the silphium became extinct. Until the late 20th century, the only known imagesof the silphium were those found on ancient silver and gold coins of Cyrene, but these were full view images of the plant. It wasn’t until the 1992 excavations of the Sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone at Cyrene, that a few archaic era silvercoins were discovered which depicted the silphium seed pod, the heart shape so well known today as the universal symbolof love. Excellent metal quality for issue. Near Extremely fine for type and Very Rare especially so nice.
