In this proposal, I will be discussing what
city my group plans to do and why. I will
also explain how we will format our
information, and what tactile project we
will present to you.

Proposal Uncovering the mysteries of
the lost city.
STUDENT
Ancient Cities Proposal
For our ancient cities project, our group would like to do the project on one of the
following cities: Tiwanaku, Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, Babylon, or Petra. Our group would like
to do this project on one of these following cities because, from watching videos and looking at
PowerPoint’s created by other peers, these cities seem very interesting. For example:
Stonehenge is one that puzzles many, because of massive stones forming an almost perfect
circle. Many people wonder how they cut the stones, how they got the stones up that high, and
most importantly, who build it, and where did they go?
Although all of these civilizations are very fascinating, the one that our group decided to
do was Machu Picchu. We decided to do this city because when the Spanish came to South
America and took over; Machu Picchu was never found and is still standing today. We also find
it interesting that the city is on a mountain. Kayla wanted to research Machu Picchu because it
reminds her of a mango smoothie. The city of Machu Picchu also reminds me (Mackenzie) of
when I was younger and my brother and I used to play “Pokémon.” Jordan would give me only
his Pikachu cards so that way he would always win. Even though I always lost, this city reminds
me of my “Pokémon” days. Another reason we would like to do this city is because this city is a
great example of the high standard of Inca architecture. These are just some of the reasons that
our group would like to research and do our project on the city of Machu Picchu.
For this project, our group is all going to research the city of Machu Picchu, and find out
very important information about the city. To determine what information is important, we will
look at and research all of the topics listed on the handout titled “The Main Elements of
Civilizations,” given to us by Mr. Burgess. After researching, we will then put all of our
information together and put the information of either a poster or a Windows Movie Maker
movie. The reason we chose to do a poster and a Movie Maker movie is because our group
thinks that posters are easy, yet sufficient ways to teach others as well as one way to have
many pictures and visuals. Our group also thinks that Movie Maker movies are unique and fun
ways to show images and again another way to teach others. These two spatial projects are
both fun and effective in our opinions. For this project, we also need a tactile project. As a
group, we decided on doing a gold pendant discovered by famous Yale historian, Hiram
Bingham. The reason we decided to tactile this gold pendant is because this gold pendant is
very unique in shape and colour. We will also have a fully completed MLA style bibliography;
will all sources we have used. After we have completed our gold pendant tactile project, our
Movie Maker movie, and our poster, we will be ready to present.
Gold Pendant
In summary, we chose the city of Machu Picchu for this project, because it is a lost city
uncovered on a high mountain, we will put all of our information onto a poster and a Windows
Movie Maker move, and we will have a tactile replica of a gold pendant from Machu Picchu,
discovered by Hiram Bingham when he discovered Machu Picchu. We will research all the
topics on the handout titled “The Main Elements of Civilization.” We would like to research this
city because it’s so interesting, and it was a “lost city,” but what about you?

Tactile Project Ideas
Project Idea:
Out of all the choices I could have chosen only one happened to be stuck in my mind. In the
next couple paragraphs I will be explaining to you (Mr. Burgess) what I’m doing, why I’m doing
it, and how I’m doing it.
For my tactile project, I would like to do it on Egypt. The element of civilization I will be focusing
on is Architecture. I’m really amazed by the unique and sturdy designs the Ancient Egyptians
created. What really surprised me was how they were able to build it with the technology they
had at the time. With Egyptian Architecture the only structure made by the Egyptians that
seemed to always be stuck in my head was the Sphinx. I always wondered where the Egyptians
got the idea of making a pharaoh/lion sculpture.
The reason I want to do my project on the Sphinx is because the textbook never really
explained a lot about it, so it kind of left me hanging. I learned a lot about pyramids, but not so
much on the Sphinx. I want to learn more about it and learn why it was constructed and made.
Every time I here the word Egypt even when I was younger, the picture that would pop into my
mind was a Sphinx. So this year when I learned we were doing a unit on Egypt I was very
enthusiastic on learning on what the Sphinx was and the purpose of it. I didn’t get that much
info in it in the textbooks or in the videos we’ve watched in class. I think this would benefit the

audience and my piers because we all didn’t learn a lot on the Sphinx and I’m going to tell all
the things I have learned about it and they are going to fully understand what the Sphinx was.
Sometimes I feel that we rush on a unit or in other words, civilizations. I was thinking we could
have learned more about each ancient civilization in a longer period of time because we didn’t
really get to fully understand all the other things that the civilizations made. I’d rather do my
project on a Sphinx than a pyramid because in the classroom I see lots of models and pictures
of pyramids, but not so much of the Sphinx. Yes there are pictures in the classroom of the
Sphinx, but not a 3-D model of it. So I felt that I needed to fill in that empty spot.
I plan on making a 3-D model of the Sphinx with modeling clay. I think modeling clay is the best
way to make the Sphinx because it’s easy to use and you can make it into the shape that you
want it to be. Then after I’m done it would start to harden which is a good thing because I
wouldn’t want it to be flimsy. Although I didn’t join art, I’m actually a really artsy person. I really
like to draw and build things like modeling. In the past I’ve done lots of modeling with clay for
dioramas and I really enjoyed it. So part of the reason why I chose this project was because of
the artsy/creating type part. When I build my model of the Sphinx I plan on making a frame of
the whole body first with wires so I don’t have to worry about the shape of the model getting
distorted. Like a body, we have a skeleton to keep are shape and keep our body up. If we didn’t
have that frame we would be all wobbly and flimsy and we would be on the ground instead of
standing upright. So I will put a frame and then I will make basic shapes for the body and the
head and wrap it around the wired frame. After I’m done that I would let it dry and then I
would paint it a sandy yellow colour so it would really look like a Sphinx. I’m probably going to
have a sort of diorama format. I’m going to get a box and then I would put the Sphinx in it and
then make a background that would include pyramids, the dessert and sand, and also a nice
blue sky. I plan on making it a fairly average size, so it wouldn’t be too big or too small and so it
would fit on the shelf and also leave enough space for other people’s projects.
So for my project I’m very enthusiastic and curious on doing the Sphinx. I’m interested in what
it was and why it was made and stuff like that. I’m also very excited to do the model because I
really enjoy doing artsy stuff. I intend to find the answers to all my questions in doing this
project.

Ancient Civilizations and Cities Proposal
I would like to do my Ancient Cities and Civilizations project electronically. I am going to
create a PowerPoint focusing mainly on Central and South America. I want the PowerPoint to
be modern, but still with a bit of colour. I think using a modern design to display ancient places
would provide a great contrast. I like irregular angles, so I hope to incorporate that somehow.
There will be a table of contents, extensive bibliography and limited information on each
civilization. Included in the presentation will be: Inca Civilization and Cities, Aztec Civilization
and Cities, Mayan Civilization and Cities.
I am choosing to stay more in Central and South America because that is one area that
intrigues me the most. My aunt is from Ecuador, which is in that area. Also, my cousin and
uncle are going to Machu Picchu this coming year. I’ve always wondered how people so far in
the past could have handled the altitude change for Machu Picchu. The architecture of the
Inca’s is so precise, how could such an old civilization accomplish that? People sometimes say
that the Mayan’s and Aztec’s are a part of the same civilization, but I have always deemed them
each their own. I would like to further research this in order to see where each of their
territories is, and the difference between the two. Did they fight? Were they friendly? Or were
they in existence in completely different time periods?
Using PowerPoint for this project I believe will be very effective. It is easy to work with,
and I understand how to use its features. I want to do something clean with not a lot of writing
so that it doesn’t look overwhelming. I think people are more likely to read something if there
isn’t an exorbitant amount of text.
I will be doing internet research on each of the civilizations listed in the first paragraph. I
am going to use more than one source for each civilization. The titles will be on the bottom of
each slide, instead of how they are normally on the top. I like to be different, and hope to have
an entirely unique presentation. There will be one slide per civilization, showing a few brief
facts about it a map. The map will show the area the civilization spanned and its cities.
Underneath the map there will be the time the approximate time the civilization began and
ended. There will be a slide following naming the civilizations cities, with its capital underlined. I
hope to make the bibliography extensive and correctly formatted.

Great Bath Proposal
BACKGROUND:
The "Great Bath" is without doubt the earliest public water tank in the ancient world. The tank itself measures
approximately 12 meters north-south and 7 meters wide, with a maximum depth of 2.4 meters. Two wide staircases lead
down into the tank from the north and south and small sockets at the edges of the stairs are thought to have held wooden
planks or treads. At the foot of the stairs is a small ledge with a brick edging that extends the entire width of the pool.
People coming down the stairs could move along this ledge without actually stepping into the pool itself. The floor of the
tank is water tight due to finely fitted bricks laid on edge with gypsum plaster and the side walls were constructed in a
similar manner. To make the tank even more water tight, a thick layer of bitumen (natural tar) was laid along the sides of
the tank and presumably also beneath the floor. Brick colonnades were discovered on the eastern, northern and southern
edges. The preserved columns have stepped edges that may have held wooden screens or window frames. Two large
doors lead into the complex from the south and other access was from the north and east. A series of rooms are located
along the eastern edge of the building and in one room is a well that may have supplied some of the water needed to fill
the bath. There were mirrors attached to the sides of the bath. The mirrors would reflect the sunlight to the water in the
great bath and would make the water warm, similar to a hut tub. The great bath was made out of lime stone which gave it
a beautiful yellow color. The color now has worn off. (http://www.harappa.com/indus/8.html) (Kahn, Charles, p.93)
(Google images)
WHAT I AM DOING:
I have chosen the “great bath” as my element of civilization to study about. I intend to search about the great
bath and create a 3D diagram of what the great bath looked like. I will also label what the parts of the great bath are, like
the stairs and the rim of the bath. By putting sculpted stick men into the artificial water that I will put in my diagram of the
great bath, I will show how the people of the IRV took baths.
WHY I AM DOING THIS:
The reason I have chosen the “great bath” as my element of civilization to study about is because it really interests
me in how one of the first civilizations had baths and sewage systems attached to the bath. In IRV the people would just
let the dirty water go through the sewage system and pour fresh water into the bath again. In modern days (about 5000
years after IRV) some countries like Sierra Leon and Somalia still don’t have clean water bathes and clean water and yet
about 5000 years ago we had these opportunities and qualities. That really surprises me and makes me want to learn more
about the Great Bath. With what kind of material was the great bath made of? With whose engineering was it that the
great bath was made? These are the questions I would like to find out about in this project I am doing and I would want to
increase the knowledge I have about the ancient world by doing this project. That is why I am doing this project.
HOW I AM DOING THIS:
I will be doing this project by gathering materials and information about the great bath. I have organized how I
will be doing this project in steps:
1. I will get a cardboard box and cover the inside with play dough.
2. Next I will make stairs out of cardboard and fold them in a zigzag shape and cover that with play doe.
3. I will make artificial water out of icing and food coloring.
4. I will put hand made men and women into the artificial water to clearly show how the IRV people took baths.

Individual project Proposal I have chosen to do my project on the Persian Empire. Some of the things that I will be
presenting to you (Mr. Burgess) and my fellow classmates are the emperors of Persia
and what they did, the gnimraf of Persia, and the wars of Persia. All these selections and
more will be contained in my background information. I will also be saying what I am
doing for my project, why I chose to do my project on the Persian Empire, and how I will
be presenting the project. I hope you (Mr. Burgess) will find Persia and some facts
about Persia interesting and fascinating.
Back ground information:
The Persian Empire was established by Cyrus II, or better known as Cyrus the Great in
the 6th century BCE. Cyrus the Great first defeated a tribe of people living near modern
day Iran which were called the Medes. After his victory over the tribe of Medes, Cyrus
the Great became powerful and was able to take on the kingdom of Lydia (modern day
Turkey) in 547 and destroy them. After his victory Cyrus the Great concurred more and
more tribes and kingdoms until he was finally the ruler of most of Asia Minor. After
Cyrus the Great was ruler, he concurred some of the Greek city states which were part
of the Greek colony for a long time. However Cyrus adopted a policy of allowing
conquered areas autonomy (a certain amount of independence) provided they paid their
taxes. The Persians were also very tolerant of local religions. Later Persian rulers also
followed this policy. Under Darius the Persian Empire was divided into areas called
satrapies and each was ruled by a man called a satrap. In 539 BC the Persians
conquered the rich and powerful city-state of Babylon. The king of Babylon had ruled
Syria and Phoenicia (modern day Lebanon) and both of these were now added to the
Persian Empire. Cyrus was followed by Cambyses II (529-522 BC). In 525 BC he
conquered Egypt. He died in 522 BC and was replaced by Darius. For the first part of
his reign Darius had to deal with rebellions in his empire. He then fought wars with
Greece. In 499 BC the Greek cities on the coast of Turkey rebelled. Darius quickly
crushed the revolt but in 490 BC he decided to invade Greece to punish the Greeks for
assisting the rebels. However the Persians were defeated by the Athenians at the battle
of Marathon. In 480 BC another Persian ruler, Xerxes, invaded Greece. This time the
Persians captured Athens and they burned the Acropolis. However their fleet was
crushed at a naval battle at Salamis. In 479 BC the Greeks won a decisive battle at
Plataea, which assured Greek independence. Xerxes was assassinated in 465 BC.
Despite its brilliance the Persian Empire declined after 400 BC. For one thing the
empire suffered from its sheer size, which made it difficult to control. The empire
suffered a series of rebellions. It also suffered from political instability. Another ruler,
Artaxerxes III, was assassinated in 338 BC. Finally the great Persian Empire was
destroyed by Alexander the Great in 331 BC. Today Archaeologists haves said that the
Persian Empire was the biggest empire (in terms of land area) known to man.
(http://www.localhistories.org/persians.html) (Google
images)
In the paragraph, you (Mr. Burgess) have just read was a summery of how the Persian
Empire was created, only some facts of what it did, and how the Persian Empire had
fallen. In the next few paragraphs, I would like to put away the trivial facts about Persia
and go into more detail about what the Persians did.
Persian Farming:
To deal with the arid climate the Persians developed an irrigation system. They built underground canals. These irrigation tunnels were often several kilometres long. They sloped slightly so gravity moved the water.
Persian farmers grew wheat, barley, olive, and wine. They raised cattle, goats and sheep. Hunting and fishing were also an important source of food. (Rich Persians also enjoyed hunting wild animals).
Moreover because of the vast size of the Persian Empire crops from one region were introduced to another. Rice and flax were introduced into Mesopotamia. Sesame was introduced into Egypt. (Kahn, Charles)
Persian homes:
Rich Persians lived in palaces of timber, stone and brick. They had comfortable upholstered furniture such as beds, couches and chairs. Tables were overlaid with gold, silver and ivory. The rich also owned gold and silver vessels, as well as glass vessels. They also owned tapestries and carpets.
Rich people in the Persian empire also had beautiful gardens. (Our word 'paradise' comes from the Persian word for garden).
For the ordinary people things were quite different. They lived in simple huts made from mud brick. If they were quite well off they might live in a house of several rooms arranged around a courtyard. However poor people lived in huts of just one room. Any furniture was very basic. (http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~dee/MESO/PERSIANS.HTM)
Persian Wars:
After the death of Cyrus the Great, his son, Darius came to power. One of Darius’s
goals was to expand the Persian Empire and to do that he must have attacked a
civilization that was both rich and powerful, so Darius could get both wealth and more
power. The civilization that came to Darius’s mind was Greece. Greece was both close
and was meeting all of Darius’s expectations. In 494BCE the Persians marched into
Greece by putting boat in a line together through a body of water and combining Asia
Minor and a Europe together. This way, he could march his troops into Greece
efficiently. Within two days, Darius marched into Greece and took the city of Macedonia.
Darius wanted to go to Greece and crush Themisteclese and his companions. Darius
fails to do so and on his way back to Greece, died of the injuries he got from the war
with Greece. When Darius died, his son Xerxes came to power. Xerxes wanted revenge
on Greece for both his father’s death and because of their defeat against them. Xerxes
made an army of 70,000 troops and marched into Greece. He defeated the Spartans
and marched into Athens. Xerxes burned Athens to the ground. He regretted burning
Athens and ordered the next day for Athens to be rebuilt, but it was too late. Xerxes
returned home and 15 years later died. He son Artaxerxes, unlike his father was more
interested in building Persia. One of the greatest monuments that the Persians was hall
of a hundred coulombs. The hall was 200 by 200 feet which made it huge. The hall of a
hundred coulombs was what made Persepolis look remarkably beautiful. When
Artaxerxes was in his late sixties, The Romans attacked the Persians. The Roman army
led by Alexander the great came into Persia and burned Persia down. Much of the
Great monuments of Persia were destroyed. (http://www.crystalinks.com/persia.html)
(Google images)
What I am doing for my project:
As I have said in my previous paragraphs, I will be doing my project on the Persian
Empire. I will be getting information on the Persian Empire and displaying them. As you
(Mr. Burgess) know, I will not be here at the end of the year, when we are presenting
our individual project so I have displayed some information about Persia in my proposal.
However I will be starting a Power point presentation just in case I would be here. I
intend to research and study about the Persian Empire, make a rough copy on loose
leaf, edit the rough copy and then make a final copy on my PowerPoint. I will then find
extra information on the Persian Empire and use it as my speech for every slide since it
is not in a professional level to read off your PowerPoint.
Why I am doing this project :
One of the main reasons that I am doing this project is that I am originally from Iran
which people say was the heart of the Persian Empire. Much of the stories my
grandfather told me was about the Persian Empire and later on much of the books I
read were about the stories I read in Farsi were of what happened to the ancient
Persians. From the beginning of my childhood, I had shown interest in the Persians and
wanted to know about them. When I came to Canada, much of what we had read about
in school in Social Studies was about the environment and the people. What really
made me happy about grade 8 was that we were studding about the ancient world and I
knew that Persia would be one of them. Sadly, I was wrong and I found out that in the
text book, there were only two pages that talked about the Persians. I was very
surprised and at the same time felt sorry. I always wonder how the people writing the
text book would compress the biggest civilization (in land size) into only two pages. I did
this project to learn more about Iran’s ancient civilization and to more importantly be
able to express my knowledge with my fellow classmates so they would learn some
stuff about the Persian Empire.
How I am doing this project:
As I have said in my previous paragraphs, I will be getting information on how the
Persian Empire was built, how the Persians farmed, and the wars that the Persians had.
I will also talk about some of the ancient Persian foods and will bring a sample of what
the ancient Persians ate in, for my classmates to see and enjoy. I will bring in a rug from
Persia and show the designs of how the Persians made their rugs.
After writing this essay, I have come to a conclusion that the Persian Empire was a lot
like how the Romans, Egyptians, and the Mesopotamians lived. I figure that the
Persians must have had some kind of trade with these civilizations. In my research I
found out that Persia was one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever known with
its brave and clever kings and its powerful army. I still do not understand why we did not
study this great civilization. Ancient Persia had many scientist with Many discoveries
that has changed the world.
This is the end of my proposal; I hope you (Mr. Burgess) have learned some things
about the Persian Empire

Historical Era Project Proposal
Historical Era choices:
1. Ancient China - civilization
2. Middle Ages: Important Figures – King Arthur, Alexander the Great, Marco Polo
3. European Civilizations: Spaniards, Vikings, Barbarians
4. Ancient Japan - civilization
5. Ancient India - civilization
In this school year we have studied many civilizations in Europe and in the Middle East. Not
a lot of attention has been given to the most populated continent in the world namely Asia. In
Asia, the most populated country today is China. It did not start as a huge country in Asia, but it
soon became a thickly populated country. As a matter of fact, its population is roughly one sixth
of mankind. The following discussion focuses on the origin of this country.
The historical era I am very interested and excited to learn is Ancient China. I really want to
focus on the lifestyle of Ancient China. Like what an everyday schedule in Ancient China would
look like. During the research of my project, I intend on looking for info about clothing, food,
social classes, architecture, education, entertainment, transportation, language, and etcetera. I
pretty much want to find out all the elements of civilization topics in China. After looking at
many pictures of Ancient China I realized that it was very different from the civilizations we
have studied throughout the year. I actually saw no similarities in Ancient China than with Indus
River, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. For instance the clothing was different, the
architecture was different, the languages were different, and
the food was different. Many things in Ancient China were
different. I would like to do a comparison of Ancient China
and the ancient civilizations we’ve studied to show how
different these civilizations were. I guess I could find
similarities with the civilizations we’ve studied because they
were not too far from each other as in Ancient China which
quite a long distance away from the other civilizations.
http://www.worldcoincatalog.com/AC/C1/China/AncientChina/AncientChina.jpg
I have several reasons for choosing Ancient China. First of all we didn’t get to learn the
Ancient China civilization in class. I also wanted to do Ancient China because it was a civilization
in Asia which was different than the other civilizations we’ve studied in class because all of the
ancient civilizations we’ve studied were in the Middle Eastern and Europe areas. I really wanted
to learn how Asian civilizations differ from European and Middle Eastern civilizations. I was
hoping we would learn and study Ancient China, but I guess we just didn’t have enough time. I
think if I did my project on Ancient China, it will not only benefit the class, but it would give me
a further understanding of the civilization. During class in one of your class discussions you (Mr.
Burgess) were saying that the only ancient civilization that didn’t decline was Ancient China. So
then I was like “Oh” and then questions started popping in my head like “What helped the
Ancient Chinese maintain their civilization?” ,“What did the Ancient Chinese have that the
other civilizations didn’t?”, “Did they have a lot of resources?”, “Did anyone try to invade the
civilization, but failed?”. A whole bunch of questions started popping in my mind just like that. I
usually choose a project that I am really curious about and don’t know a lot of. If there were
two civilizations that I had in mind to do, I would choose the civilization I have more questions
for. Ancient China gave me a whole list of questions that I really wanted to know the answer to
so that is mostly why I chose Ancient China. I also didn’t see anything about Ancient China on
the walls of our classroom, so that probably
meant no one did a project on it yet. So then I
thought I could do my project on Ancient
China. I was really excited about doing a unit
on Ancient China this year because I wanted to
know how the Great Wall made (which the
whole entire reason why I was so interested in
doing ancient China). I also wanted to know
who came up with the idea of making it and
why it was made. Since we didn’t do a unit on
Ancient China I was hoping we would do a
project on a civilization we want and that’s
what we’re doing right now. So I am really excited and really happy that I would get the chance
to learn lifestyle Ancient China. Truly I have many questions to answer in this project.
I don’t plan on making a hands on project this time, but just a PowerPoint presentation
explaining the topics included in the elements of civilizations list. Each slide would talk about
one of the Elements of civilization. My wide sources of information would be mostly found on
the internet. I don’t think I would find too much information in the textbooks. After past
assignments I have learned that the textbook does not have the answer to everything so it’s
best that I find most of my information on the internet where I can get tons of information. In
doing this project I would to make a few slides focusing on the similarities and differences of

Ancient China from the other ancient civilizations. If I have enough time to do this project I
would add on another column to the Comparative Civilization Analysis. This project to me is like
doing another unit on a civilization rather than just a project.
In this final analysis I will not only find information just to answer my questions, but find
information to compare it with the other Ancient civilizations. I really want to show how
different Ancient China was from the other civilizations. I will much as possible find as much
information I can to give the audience a good idea of how life was in Ancient China. Hopefully
the audience would learn a thing or two once I present my project.

For this assignment, we introduce you to the past. The past world full of
mysteries and riddles that would leave your mind asking how, what, when, and
why. The assignment for Ancient Civilizations is to help you and I to learn about
the past that we didn’t even knew before, not until we are assigned to do this. If
it wasn’t for the great minds and techniques of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have
any technology, electricity, comfy beds, proper clothing, games, and proper
housing. Maybe it’s time for us to learn how they lived and see how lucky we are
that we have modern materials to help us live our life easier.
My goal on this assignment is to make the presentation unique as possible but
informative at the same time. The presentation would consist of 25 slides with the table
of contents, the introduction, the bibliography, and the title page. There are 8 civiliza-
tions on my list but decreased to 6 since my research for the other civilizations were-
n’t as informative and must be 8000 B.C.E-1,200 B.C.E if possible.
To gain the audience’s interest, I could add pictures to help them imagine and to
catch their attention as they learn. The sound/music (Dead Can Dance by Musica Eter-
nal) helps the audience feel the presence of the past around them. To make the audi-
ence even more interested, I had to think of a way to make it fun; if there are brain
teasers and illusions, go with it! The ancient Machu Picchu isn’t just a city on top of a
mountain, but is also full of wonders and an example would be shown on my presenta-
tion. Pictures and ideas such an illusion are a wonderful way to help the audience
learn by having fun and not to get them bored . Adding animations such as GIFs could
be of good use as long as I could find anything that could relate with the topic such as
a city, or a book. I had to think of more creative stuff and that’s when I thought about
adding effects. Using Transitions for my slide s may be creative but to see that every-
one uses them for their presentation , you kind of loose your interest especially when
you add transitions on your text. To make use of the transition wisely, I have to add it
somewhere that people wouldn’t expect and that’s when I can create the excitement.
To sell my presentation, I had to be specific with words or numbers so that the
audience wouldn’t get confused. My presentation has to be rare or something that the
audience hasn’t seen before because if they had seen the style/layout/writing style be-
fore, there’s a possibility that their mind could wonder off into space instead of focusing
on learning. Where’s the excitement in that? Since my audience would be my fellow
classmates and Mr. Burgess, I know some things I can use to entertain them. To sell
my presentation, I had to come up with a good quote such as “Blast to the Past” be-
cause not only does it rhyme but it has a perfectly good meaning behind it.
Things to be used for my presentation:
Sizes of letters: depends on how many information there is to be said ; 20, 24, 18, 21.5,
96, 36, 32
Font: Engravers MT, Century Schoolbook (Headings), Century Schoolbook (Body), Times
New Roman, Monotype Corsiva, and Castellar
Colours: For layout, a little brownish colour and for the text is black.
Layout: Travel
Effects: transitions for pictures
Music: Dead Can Dance

Supposedly, I want to add a slide for the vocabularies and another slide for some brain
teasers relating to the ancient civilizations and/or cities. The bibliography or researches
isn’t exact yet because I might add some new ones before the deadline.

For my “Ancient civilizations” project, the first civilization that came to my mind was
China. China has thousand years of history, and I‟m from China so I have some ideas that I
could add on my project. I want to do the “Great Wall” to Xi An, I think those two places are
the two highlights of China.
I think the ancient history is like a mystery. For me, the mystery is Babylon and Machu
Picchu. Babylon is famous because of the “Hanging Garden”, in books, the writer say how
beautiful the “Hanging Garden “ is, but a lot of people believe the writer back then just
made it up. So I want to know if the “Hanging Garden” actually exists. The mystery for Ma-
chu Picchu a lot of people might don‟t know is if you rotate the mountain 90 degrees, then
you„ll see the man‟s face!!!
I also want to do Cusco, I like the way their building have the Spanish style and Cusco‟s
own style, I think that is what it makes Cusco‟s building is very unique and one of a kind. I
also want to know more about their culture. So I‟m going to gather some pictures about
their buildings and to see if the Spanish add their style in to the building or the Cusco peo-
ple thought themself.
Tenochtitlan have pyramid just like Egypt, I want to know if Egypt ever contacted Ten-
ochtitlan people, how come they think alike, or the Egypt came to Tenochtitlan to show
them how to build a pyramid, because the Tenochtitlan „s pyramid is really similar to the
Egypt‟s. Or the Tenochtitlan copied the Egypt‟s, but how? And that is one mystery I want to
find out.
I think this civilization around the world project is just to make us learn more about the
civilizations, and India is one main part in this project, so I want to India Sanchi. When I
looked at India Sanchi‟s pictures, I thought it was amazing! I knew instantly that India San-
chi has to be in my power point. It have everything that I‟m looking for, it's ruins was kind of
creepy, mystery and I think history is just like that, and most importantly, it makes me won-
der, what happened? What was it? I think it might be a bright/highlight in my power point.
I want to do a power point, and of course I‟m going to include a lot of pictures. I am also
going to include 2 maps for each civilizations or cities I‟m doing and roughly tell where is
the cities now today, so you (Mr. Burgess) And the classmates will have more idea where it
is. I also want to talk about the cities golden age and the low point. and how long was the
civilization exist. Sadly I am not going to do a model, because I might don‟t have enough
time. But I am going to try my best to make this the best project ever.

Ancient Civilizations Proposal STUDENT
Here are the ancient civilizations and cities I have chosen:
-Babylon -Stonehenge
-Byblos -Indus Valley -Damascus -Mesopotamia
-Machu Picchu -China -Jericho -India
Cities: Civilizations:
For this project, I’m going to convert the information I gather into a PowerPoint. I have
chosen to do five ancient cities and five ancient civilizations. For the cities, I am going
research the following: Babylon, Byblos, Damascus, Machu Picchu, and Jericho. For the
civilizations I’m getting information on Stonehenge, Indus Valley, Mesopotamia, China
and India, all of which interests me. On each slide, I will explain about the cities and
civilizations. I want to accomplish giving at least three interesting facts and two visuals. In
the end, I should have about fifteen slides all of which including a bibliography with an
extended slide, a title page and a table of contents. My goal for this project is to research
as much as possible on each of the cities and civilizations. In my PowerPoint, my layout
will be different on every slide; Putting visuals and text in different places each time. I
want to use a plain white background to make the text pop out more. I think that would
make it look really nice and easy to read.
I guess I don’t have exact reason for wanting to choose the ones I
want, but I’m very interested in learning about how people survived
back then. It really makes me wonder how in Stonehenge, how they
got the rocks to go in the position they are in.
I think it’s pretty amazing how the people thought of all this.
Why I have chosen a PowerPoint is because I think it is very affiant?
and you can do lots of cool? effects to make your presentation more
interesting.

My opinion about history is that it is important to learn history so you won’t keep on making
the same mistakes ( like world war two). At first when we started talking about this project
I didn’t know about civilization until now I am finding more information and I’m getting in-
terested in this project and other Ancient Civilization. I’m curious about which civilization
would I find and the civilization other people will find. I’m also curious about my marks. I’m
going to try to find much information about the Ancient civilization, make my project inter-
esting and trying more then my hardest.

Ancient Cities Where?
Luoyang China
Byblos Gebal

For this Project I am planning to use Microsoft PowerPoint program. I will also use
Google.com and ask.com and I will also have bibliography so people know where I got
this information from. If I find some music that goes with this project I might have music.
I will have pictures and maps in this project to show where the city of civilization is or
were. I will also try to find some objects that might have been found from the ruins of
the civilization or cities (if the Civilizations has ruins). I will also include the pictures of
the objects found at that place. I will also have pictures of the ruins of the Civilization or
cities. I will also include a short video clip of some of the ruins of the civilization. For my
project I will have a table of contents in the begging of my project and bibliography at the
end. I will try to find more interesting information about the cities and civilization.
CHINA CHINA : : China is about 5000 years old and it is one of the earliest civilizations. Ancient
china was mostly ruled by dynasties one of the famous one is Xia dynasty That is the dyn-
asty I will be focusing on for ancient china. At first people thought that the Xia dynasty is
a legond that people passed on but then discovered that it is real.
Luoyang Luoyang is an ancient city that is located in
china. It is near the Luosui River that is how it
has its name. Luoyang has been the capital of
nine dynasties. I think it is a really interesting
city
Indus River Valley Indus River Valley is also one
of the earliest civilizations
know it is about 5000 years
old. It is also known as Harap-
pa ( one of the cities in Indus
river valley).
Varanasi Varanasi is in India and is
one of the earliest living
cities. It is also known as
Banaras. It is a sacred spot
in India.
The Khmer The Khmer Civilization came into existence around
802 to 1431 A.D. The people of the Khmer civilizations
were really good at carving rocks you could see the civili-
zation today it looks awesome.
Ancient Civilization/Cities Proposal
8B
For my Ancient Civilization/Cities project, I would like to do the project on the following
civilizations: Mesopotamia, Indus River Valley, China (Ancient and Imperial), the Mayans, the
Incas, and the Aztecs. I would also like to research the following cities: Eridu, Babylon,
Mohenjo-Daro, Chang’an, Machu Picchu, Cuzco, and Tenochtitlan. I would like to do these
civilizations because I think they are important in history. For example: some of these
civilizations are far more advanced then we might have believed. The people of Indus River
Valley had a complex drainage system that was one of the most sophisticated in the ancient
world. This is important because, this is how they got their water and got rid of all the waste.
I would like to do these civilizations because they all seem interesting for many different
reasons. For example, I really find the America’s civilizations and cities fascinating. The city of
Machu Picchu is one that fascinates me the most, because its location is on a mountain. I’m
really amazed with the fact that when the Spanish came and took over most of South America,
they never found the city of Machu Picchu, so the city is still standing, unlike the city of Cuzco.
Although the city of Cuzco was destroyed, this city also fascinates me. One reason the city
fascinates me is because it reminds me of when I was younger, and I would watch, “The
Emperor’s New Groove.” I never thought that the name Cuzco meant anything, until this year
when this project came up. It also fascinates me that even though the Spanish came and took
over the city, some of Cuzco’s actual buildings are still up today. This will allow people today to
see how the city was possibly built. Another city that intrigues me is the city of Babylon and the
hanging gardens. I would like to research the hanging gardens of Babylon, and why they were
built, because why would somebody need to build a hanging garden in the middle of what is
now the Middle East. Was somebody trying to impress somebody else? This is what I’d like to
find out in this project.
I will do this project by researching all the civilizations and cities that I have mentioned
through the internet. I will go into extensive detail and pick out the most important parts of
each civilization and city. I will add pictures and visuals. After I have found all of my pictures and
information, I will then put all of the information I have gathered into a PowerPoint. I will have
one slide for each civilization and one slide for each city. I will try to make my PowerPoint as
unique in layout as possible, and use bullet points instead of full sentences. In my opinion, using
bullets is far more effective for a PowerPoint then full sentences. It breaks up the presentation
into information you want your audience to see rather than leaving some people behind when
they are trying to finish reading all of the full sentences. I will also have a full and properly
completed bibliography, with all sources, using NoodleTools.
In summary, I will extensively research the cities and civilizations I have mentioned in
the first paragraph (Mesopotamia, Indus River Valley, China (Ancient and Imperial), the Mayans,
the Incas, and the Aztecs, Eridu, Babylon, Mohenjo-Daro, Chang’an, Machu Picchu, Cuzco, and
Tenochtitlan). I will give basic, but important, information about each city and civilization. So I
have told you what I’ll be doing for my project and what interests me. The cities of Machu
Picchu, the forgotten city that still exists today, Cuzco, the city with old buildings still
mysteriously standings, and Babylon, the city with the hanging gardens, but what about you?

Ending the Trojan War Proposal
Summative Copy
Prepared by:
Prepared for: Mr. Burgess
Ending the Trojan War Proposal
Ancient Greece. A mystical land full of dark secrets and unforgiving
battles. Welcome, to the Trojan War… The Trojan War was an epic battle between all of
Greece, and Troy. The battle went on for years and there didn’t seem to be a clear victor.
That was the case, until Odysseus came along. Odysseus formed a plan that saved the
Greeks, and ended the city of Troy. Today, not much is known about the great battle of
Troy. Most of what we know comes from the famous poet Homer, from his poem the
Iliad. The Iliad was a complex and long poem that reflected upon the past. No one
actually knows if the great battle happened because we only have the Iliad to tell us this.
Also, the gods were somehow involved in all of this. To better understand the past, we
were asked to create a mural about warfare and technology. In this paper you’ll find how
we did it, why we did it, how we’re going to the mural. You’re also going to find that we
concentrated our efforts on warfare and even more, the Trojan War. Enjoy.
What
As we had stated before, we will be making a mural on war and technology. More
specifically, the Trojan War. To win the Trojan War, Odysseus sent in a huge wooden
horse to Troy. The foolish Trojans thought it to be a gift, and gladly took it in through
their gates. Little did they know about a small group of Greeks inside the horse. After
dark, the Greeks sneaked out of the horse and opened the gates of Troy, letting in the
entire Greek army. Not expecting this at all, Troy held up a probably weak resistance but
ustterly losing the battle. For the mural we’ll be depicting the whole “Greek army in Troy
and now the Trojans have to fight back” scene. We’ll have the horse drawn in front of the
gates, and then have a bunch of soldiers fighting. We’ll include labels pointing out about
the Trojan horse, and what sort of weapons and armour the soldiers used.
It will look something like this.
Why
Although we’re doing this mostly because of the fact we were told to, that isn’t
the only reason. We would also like to increase our knowledge and get a better
understanding of what happened (or didn’t happen) all those years ago. We are also doing
this to reinforce what we already know with visual aides. With this, we’re also helping
others to get a good understanding of the Trojan War. Finally, we’re doing this to
increase our ability to collaborate with others.
How
The group had a couple discussions on what we’re going to do. Since the group
members all live in different parts, we had to think of a way we were going to make this
mural. After a heated debate we concluded that the best course of action would be to:
1. Have the artists draw on different sheets of paper, then we’ll cut them out and
paste them on to the actual mural with tape or glue.
2. Have the linguists working on the proposal on word and then send to the other
person to improve or proof read through e-mail.
3. Work in the homework club.
4. If possible, work in each others’ houses.
As you can see, we have this mural well thought out and (hopefully) well organized.
We will have to work together to make sure we can illustrate this grand (not to mention
clever) battle. We can’t know what the end product will look like or even what quality it
will be. We can only work hard and hope to make sure it turns out well. We also hope
that any viewers will like it and will get a good understanding of the remarkable war in
Troy.
