Executive Summary

Functional Exposure is an essential element of any media course as it gives a clear view of what

goes on inside the organization and how the various departments are managed properly without

leaving space for any kind of mistake. Media organizations have a lot of workload and stress as

they are in a race to broadcast all the important news before the other news channels. Thus, all

the high level tasks are generally assigned to the senior people of the organization.

I carried out my internship in India TV which is a spiritual channel. My working experience in

India TV was very interesting and gave me a lot of exposure of the electronic media. I came to

know that whatever we study in class how all that is implemented in the organization.

It was a great learning experience in India TV as during the six week period of internship I was

assigned almost all kind of task which gave many lessons and improved my skills to a great

extent. In the beginning since I was not eligible enough to perform bigger tasks so I was allotted

lighter work so that I could become acquainted with the environment and the work procedure.

First 15days I worked in editing bay in which my mentor tough me the skills of editing. And I

used to collect clipping in regard of particular news from YouTube then at the editing desk I

used to see how the whole news was being cut down.

We even went inside the studio and used to watch how the whole bulletin has been read by the

anchor and also asked requested our head to kindly give us some time for practicing for the

anchoring.

It consisted of packages, bulletins all based on any story whether it is art and culture, Bollywood,

fashion or glamour, historical news, sports news, business news and many news story which is

self carried some positive news the main aim of the organization to carry out a separated bulletin

for positive news by its self is to make a positive environment all around the globe wherein each

Page 4: Anchit Str

and every channel shows so many stories but neglect the positive happenings. Thus India TV

channel takes up the step to bring a new phase of world.

PREFACE

It is said that without theory, practice is blind and without practice theory is meaningless.

Hence practical training has been made integral part of the management education in India. The

functional exposure report programmers are designed to give a student the future of the media

happenings and work culture. It exposes the potential of the student of the future to the actual

tune of the working environment present is dynamic organization. Personnel management is that

part of management concerned with the people at work and with their relationships within the

organization.

Training is the process of increasing the knowledge and skill for doing a particular job. It is an

organized procedure by which people learn knowledge and skill for a definite purpose. The

purpose of training is basically to bridge the gap between job requirements and present

competency of an employee.

I am fortunate that I got the project where I tried to find out the working methods and techniques,

which is enough to get the opportunity of vocational training at India TV , New Delhi.

Industry Profile

India TV is a Hindi news channel based in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. The channel was

launched on 20 May 2004 by Rajat Sharmaand wife Ritu Dhawan.[1] The channel is the flagship

service of Independent News Service, which was co-founded by Sharma and Dhawan in 1998.

Rajat Sharma co-founded India TV with his wife Ritu Dhawan in April, 2004 from a swanky

studio in Film City, Noida, then considered one of Asia’s largest news TV studios.

In 1997, Rajat Sharma and Ritu Dhawan set up their own production house –Independent News

Service (INS), the parent company which owns India TV.In a short period, India TV has created

benchmarks in innovation, impact, ratings, time spends, and viewer-support. Indeed, India TV’s

newsbreaks have inspired talk shows on rival channels, Bollywood films, BBC documentaries

and articles in Time Magazine, even Amul hoardings.

In today’s rampant me-too-ism, India TV is, perhaps, the only Hindi news channel that is

perceived as downright absurd. In a short period of its existence, India TV has earned a repute of

covering stories such about alien abductions, aliens drinking cows milk, the discovery of a real-

life "stairway to heaven". India TV views mostly range in right wing political spectrum.

The channel’s No.10 position is no accident. It is the result of Mr. Sharma leading the way on the

lonely path of "ridiculousness first." The channel is famous across social media circles for

carrying the craziest pieces of 'news', and has been the butt of everyone's jokes for so long, that

now people think it is a parody channel. It is the result of the efforts of a self-made man who

kept both his feet firmly on the ground, a journalist for whom the viewer’s interest has been

paramount.

Today Mr. Sharma’s editorial decision-making reaches out to an audience of 90 million C&S

homes. The human resource of India TV resides among loyal viewers and 500 staffers. INS has

investment from ComVentures, a top Silicon Valley venture fund, and a leading private equity

entity. The enterprise value of INS which crossed Rs 500 crore in January, 2008 has been rising

by leaps and bounds.India TV has state-of-the-art digital connectivity and its Broadcast Centre

covers an area of more than 1,28,000 square feet in Sector 85, Noida.

Prior to launching India TV, Rajat Sharma was a known face on Indian television since 1992,

having previously been the anchor of Aap Ki Adalat on Zee TV and Janata Ki Adalaton Star

TV. Independent News Service received investment from Fuse+ Media, an entity of

Page 6: Anchit Str

ComVentures, a venture capital firm based in Palo Alto, California, United States with over $1.5

billion of assets under management. Further investments have valued Independent News Service

at Rs. 800 crores.

Page 17: Anchit Str

Responsibility makes ones responsible and independent person to his work. As I am in Sports Department of India TV , in this department as an intern I had responsibility to edit a package, make Aston, tape dumping, editing and to roll a bulletin successfully. So, I have to report there by 3 in the Afternoon. In the day three bulletins rolled. The biggest responsibility was to edit and get published the package before the bulletin roll. I was working with a department wherein there were few people who were involved in doing this task these are as follows:-

Chapter-3: JOB SPECIFIC ANALYSIS SUMMARY OF TASK

DONE IN ALL SIX WEEKS WEEK: 1MONITORING DEPARTMENTIn

the very first week of my internship in India TV channel, I came across with basic things that

evolve electronic media. I have work under research department for few days. The research

departments play an important role in an organization. This department provides basic needs to

the organization. All the facts and data of company are secured in research department. It

manages a library that consist news published in newspaper, magazine and tabloid. All the facts

are arranged in sequence i.e. according to date, year and so on. In the research library a separate

Page 18: Anchit Str

section has made for every topic like there will be separate section of political, environment,

entertainment news etc. It was very informative to work in research department. When you

search news in newspaper and feed that in system, you get aware with that news deeply. After

doing work in research department I feel an intern must work with this department. That will

help him/her to search and select the news according to the importance, dig out the facts and also

strong the base of knowledge.WEEK: 2ARCHIVE DEPARTMENT In this week, I was

shifted to news desk where in I was not just allowed to write content but was also sent on the

location with the camera person to collect the story and for the first time I was a part of making

package for the department sports track .The news that goes outside the India UK, South Asia

and so on made and roll in this department. It has large reach and accessibility.I was given to

ingest the stories and some feeds that directly come from V-SAT. All the feeds from

international and national agencies like Reuters, AP, APTN, PTI etc approach directly to V-SAT.

I have ingested many tapes, feeds, promos weather and sting.I came to know how to select the

story for the bulletin. Top Stories (10 min)

• Bulletin (25 min)

• Package (every Sunday 20 min)

The bulletin is only for 25 minute. A news package should be of 2 minute and entertainment, sports package could be of 4 minute.

Only important and current stories are selected for each segment. In a day where lots of news came, to select one of the most valuable story among all is very difficult. Along with selecting the news, I have also learned scripting for package.

WEEK: 3 & 4

NEWS ROOM

The third & fourth week gave me an experience of editing of which I was quite knowledgeable

as I had done editing in college also while preparing the documentary. In India TV, there was

only one editing system, Final Cut Pro. Since, I was well versed with the functions and the

Page 19: Anchit Str

techniques of FCP, so I could easily work on them in India TV. In fact I got to learn a lot more

while getting several packages edited.

The staff of the Editing Department was very helpful and solved my queries regarding editing

software’s and editing technique

Here my mentor was told me to watch and learn about basic things about usingcomputer

software and machine equipment.

Here, I learnt about editing techniques, I captured and checked files and worked in final cut pro

episodes. Also, I captured and checked recorded files. And, I was learning how to make promo

for a show and made video loops of cricket.

Chapter-4: LEARNING SUMMARY

They were all friendly and made us feel as if we are at real workstation.  It was great to get interned at such organization. We have now seen the scenario of actual workstation of Electronic Media. I am benefited in such ways:-

• It gave us experience of how a program is prepared in a TV channel.

• It gave us opportunity to work between professionals and also gave us the opportunity to

develop ourselves as professionals.

• It enhanced our Hindi writing.

• India TVmade us know about all the essential elements that are involved in compiling a

4.2. PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE GAINED

The academic objectives of functional exposure are to

are applied/not applied in real situations.

• Develop skills in report writing through information collection, data analysis,

data/information extraction and presentation and draw lessons vis-à-vis firm or

Media.

Training helps the students to get a practical experience of all the skills of journalism and in

having hand on experience in maximum number of things. Training also gives us the opportunity

to work with the industry professionals and to prove our inner talent and caliber. The following

project report consist of Introduction to Journalism- it would focus on maximum aspects of

Page 21: Anchit Str

electronic media its changes till yet. Then would come a brief about company or organization

situations.

come up with tinge of reality we can easily correlate it something we have experienced

while our real work.

4.4. CHANGES REQUIRED / LIMITATIONS

Page 23: Anchit Str

If training has some benefits then it has certain limitations also. These limitations are as follows:

• A trainee, in the eyes of media organization is one who is totally unaware of the practical

knowledge and thus he is not given any project or assignment individually. He is

completely inexperienced so a media organization cannot afford to trust completely on an

intern. It, therefore, becomes difficult for an intern to get his own work telecast.

• The other limitation is that getting credit for your work is very difficult, if not impossible,

when under a senior, as today no one gives you a way of success so easily.

• During the course of my training, I also faced some limitations. I was only asked to write

on light matters. I was not allowed to reports on hard core subjects

• While working in electronic media organization one has to sometimes work in odd hours

like evening shifts.

• While working in media organization of repute, it is expected to give your 100% to your

work with sincerity but no stipends are provided.
