Since 1848, AAAS has served as a prominent voice to advance science and as a valuable
resource for scientists, educators, and policy makers. For the past 100 years, part of
this mission has included publishing the journal Science, one of the world’s premier
peer-reviewed research journals. Working together to disseminate the most compelling
discoveries across all scientific disciplines, AAAS and Science continue to fulfill their
mission of advancing science for the benefit of all.
In addition to supporting Science, individual memberships are a driving force behind
critical AAAS programs and activities designed to strengthen the global scientific
enterprise. By becoming a AAAS member, you not only make a significant impact by
allowing AAAS to continue its mission of advancing science and serving society, but you
also gain powerful resources to develop your own career.
As a member, you’ll receive 51 issues of the journal Science delivered weekly as well
as online access to: groundbreaking research before it’s published; the Science online
archives dating back to 1880; and the current table of contents. In addition to all the
benefits provided by the journal Science, AAAS has partnered on behalf of its members
to provide substantial discounts with numerous organizations, including: Apple, VISA,
GEICO, Barnes & Noble, and more.
If you’re interested in becoming a AAASmember and changing the face of science, please

Remote, isolated, catastrophic events occur across the globe that affect civilians, the
environment, indigenous rights, and more. The AAAS Science and Human Rights Program
uses geospatial technologies to broaden the ability of non-governmental organizations
to rapidly gather, analyze, and disseminate information in these times of crisis. And
this is just one of the ways that AAAS is committed to advancing science to support
a healthy and prosperous world. Join us. Together we

The science and engineering challenges that society faces today are far more complex than those
of 40 to 50 years ago. The best available scientific, technical, and economic information is required
to establish priorities, make decisions, and develop best practices. AAAS manages the Science &
Technology Policy Fellowships in four areas to provide the opportunity for accomplished scientists
and engineers to contribute to the federal policymaking process while learning firsthand about the
intersection of science and policy. And this is just one of the ways that AAAS is committed to advanc-
ing science to support a healthy and prosperous world. Join us.

The David Starr Jordan Prize Committeeis pleased to announce the sixth David Starr Jordan Prize Winner:
Dr. Anurag Agrawalof the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cornell University
Dr. Agrawal is one of the foremost authorities on the community and evolutionary ecology of speciesinteractions. Currently an Associate Professor at Cornell (see www.herbivory.com), Dr. Agrawal waspreviously Assistant Professor of Botany at the University of Toronto. An undergraduate at the University ofPennsylvania, he received his PhD at the University of California, Davis in 1999. Dr. Agrawal has madehighly influential contributions, including empirical and conceptual advances in our understanding of plantdefense against herbivory, impacts of genetic diversity on community processes, coevolutionary interactionsbetween monarch butterflies and milkweeds, and deciphering the success of invasive plants. His work hasbeen presented in over 100 papers, has been cited over 3,000 times and has been presented in 75 invitedlectures. He currently serves as an Associate Director of Cornells Center for a Sustainable Future.
In 1986, Cornell, Indiana and Stanford Universities established a joint endowment to fund a prize in honor ofDavid Starr Jordan, a scientist, educator and institution builder of enormous influence on higher education inthe United States who had important ties to each of these universities. The prize is international in scope andpresented approximately every three years to a young scientist (40 years of age or less) who is making novelinnovative contributions in one or more areas of Jordans interest: evolution, ecology, population andorganismal biology. The intent of the David Starr Jordan Prize is to recognize scientists who are makingresearch contributions likely to redirect the principal foci of their fields. The sixth David Starr Jordan Prizecarries an award of $20,000.00. In addition to a cash award, Dr. Agrawal will receive a commemorativemedal, will attend an award ceremony (this year at Cornell), and visit the other sponsoring institutions to givescholarly presentations of his work.

Intracellular Protein KitsThe In-Cell ELISA Detection Kits provide a simple and convenientmethod for quantifying intracellular proteins in whole cells. Theenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit enables the si-multaneous detection of two different target proteins within thesame well (for example, a posttranslationally modified protein andits unmodified form), eliminating the variability caused by differ-ences in cell plating. The kit makes use of primary antibodies tothe target protein(s) and corresponding species-specific ThermoScientific DyLight-conjugated Secondary Antibodies to monitor tar-get protein levels. The kit is compatible with the Odyssey InfraredImaging System. The In-Cell ELISA Colorimetric Detection Kit makesuse of target-specific primary antibodies and a horseradish peroxi-dase–conjugated detection reagent to detect proteins of interest. Tocontrol for differences arising from cell plating, a whole-cell stain isincluded for normalization.Thermo Fisher ScientificFor information 815-968-0747www.thermo.com/pierce
Protein Biomarker ServicesNextGen Sciences’ biomarkerexpress is a suite of services thatmove protein biomarkers through the validation and testing pipe-line by addressing the bottleneck of assay development. The assaytechniques, which are based on mass spectrometry technology, areapplicable to a variety of sample types, including biofluids, tissues, cells, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue, and plants. Themethods decrease the time and cost associated with biomarker de-velopment.NextGen SciencesFor information +44-(0)-1462-685-788www.nextgensciences.com
Mass Spectrometer for ProteomicsThe AB Sciex 5800 is a fast, sensitive system designed to help re-searchers advance the discovery of disease-related biomarkers forpotential use in a clinical setting. The system represents an advancein matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry technology because it enables researchersto identify up to 30 percent more proteins at a rate 10 times fasterthan any other MALDI system now on the market, according to the
manufacturer. The system is combinedwith new processing softwareto form a complete workflow to accelerate proteomics research. Thesystem enables scientists to identify and quantify more proteins incomplex samples.Applied Biosystems/MDS Analytical TechnologiesFor information 508-383-7961www.appliedbiosystems.com
Cytokine AssaysThe Bio-Plex Pro magnetic bead–based human and mouse cyto-kine assays increase speed and improve reproducibility in cytokineresearch. The immunoassays offer the full automation previouslyunavailable with suspension bead arrays. They are multiplex as-says that offer fast and accurate performance for the detection ofmultiple biomarkers in a single experiment, using as little as 12.5microliters of serum, plasma, or other body fluids.Bio-Rad LaboratoriesFor information 800-424-6723www.bio-rad.com
Zone Measuring SystemThe ProtoCOL automatic zone measuring system has new featuresdesigned to improve the speed of analyzing single radial immuno-diffusion (SRD) plates, so flu vaccines can be manufactured morerapidly. The ProtoCOL can generate results from a 16-zone SRD plateof flu vaccines in minutes, 10 times faster than manual analysis. The system’s software supports 21CFR Part 11 and includes a gan-try control, allowing automatic imaging of larger SRD plates whenrequired. These innovative features make ProtoCOL suitable for in-creasing productivity in any good-manufacturing-practices vaccineproduction facility. The ProtoCOL’s computer-controlled, high-reso-lution charge-coupled device camera captures precise zone imagesand its new software automatically assesses not just two pointsfrom around the circular zone (as would be done manually), but si-multaneously analyzes multiple points. The software then calculatesa precise average diameter measurement to accurately indicate vac-cine potency.SynbiosisFor information +44-(0)-1223-727125www.synbiosis.com
