N ational legislation, primarily the Constitution,said equality between its citizens, without distinction of sex, as follows:

(1) Citizens are equal before the law and publicauthorities, without any privilege or discrimination.

employed, under the law for people who have Romaniancitizenship and residence in the country. The RomanianState guarantees the equality of chances between menand women to occupy such positions and dignities.

A lthough enacted in Romania for severaldecades, citizens regardless of gender equality is farfrom being achieved in all aspects of public and private

life, leaving the way open for discrepancies based onmembership in one sex.

Studies based on official statistical data reveals

the existence of substantial differences between legalrules and their implementation.

F amily Life

U nder the influence of a traditional model, is thoughtto be the duty of women to manage family resources, meetthe household chores as "light and small" (supplies, cooking,washing, ironing, cleaning) to supervise and care for childrenand elderly to and professional tasks in the workplace. Incontrast, men are assigned to those things considered"difficult and important, such as the construction andmasonry repair and maintenance of facilities or to carry out

which, moreover, are called specialized workers.

Consequently, women's leisure time budget is muchsmaller than that of men.

Pu blic life and participation in decision

W omen have been and are systematically wronged byhaving access to decision makers and the public resourcesthat are women, not because they have the necessary skills.

A t the level of ministers, only 14% were women in2009, 12.6% in county councils, 10.8% in local councils, 4.7%and 10.7% sub- prefects.

Since 3184 mayors, only 114 are women, ie 3.5%.

The Romanian Parliament is only 5.83% of senatorsare women and 11.3% of the total number of deputies.

Institutions designed to ensure non-discrimination andequal opportunities, but also for combating violence andtrafficking of women are treated as marginal or poorlybudgeted.

Because men have power and resources and thatwomen do not always manage to impose their interests, theytend to be obedient to the bosses, is not sympathetic to womenand not to represent specific interests.

Continue the use of discriminatory stereotypes thatpresent women as "object" decorative, especially in mediaand advertising.
