– if a direct connection is not possible, you needa wall-mounted jack (e.g. IAE or UAE) and anISDN connection cable for the connection tothe external S0 port of the PBX

– the wall-mounted power supply for the con-nection with the 230 V socket (also see point in Fig. 5 on page 41)

Please pay attention to the followingadvice when wiring the analog cables:

- To prevent interferences, avoid longer parallellines of wires, especially next to power supplylines and twist together the pairs of wires.

Pay attention to the following advicewhen wiring the ISDN cables (S0 bus):

- In case of unfavourable conditions (e.g. near apowerful radio station or near a power line) use ascreened cable.

- Limit the length of the total bus to a maximum of150 m.

- Put terminators at the beginning and at the endof the connection (also see point and inFig. 5 on page 41).

- To compensate interference use a cable with astar quad stranding that is wired as shown inFig. 6 on page 42. Thereby both sending wires(a1 and b1) as well as both receiving wires (a2and b2) are in opposite direction of each other.

- How to connect the UAE8 or IAE jack with theAnalog/ISDN Converter, is shown in Fig. 7 onpage 42.

42 Connection to the Exchange Line and PBX

ISDN PBX with more than one S0 Port (Connection for synchronization)In this operation mode the connection of a S0 portof the PBX to the analog connections of the net-work provider is done the same way as describedin chapter ISDN PBX with one S0 port on page 39.

Additionally you have to make a connection to theISDN connection (NT) connected to one of theother external S0 ports of the PBX for synchroniza-tion.

The following connection types are possible –even mixed:

– in case of a small distance between thedevices: Direct connection with the cablesenclosed in the scope of delivery

– in case of a long distance between thedevices: Fixed installation cables and wall-mounted jacks if necessary

Use the following connection cables, partlyenclosed in the scope of delivery for direct con-nections:

– one ISDN connection cable RJ-45 (8P/4C) toRJ-45 (8P/4C) for the connection to the NT(also see point in Fig. 8 on page 43)

– one ISDN connection cable RJ-45 (8P/4C) toRJ-45 (8P/4C) for the connection to the PBX(also see point in Fig. 8 on page 43)

For fixed wiring you need the following installa-tion cables or wall-mounted jacks:

– unscreened 4-core installation cable (e.g. J-YY 2x2x0.6 St III Bd) for the connection to theexternal S0 port of the PBX and the NT (seealso point and in Fig. 9 on page 44)

– if a direct connection is not possible, ISDNwall-mount jacks (e.g. IAE or UAE) and ISDNconnection cable for the connection to theexternal S0 port of the PBX and the NT

Please pay attention to the followingadvice when laying the ISDN conduc-tors (S0 bus):

- In case of unfavourable conditions (e.g. near apowerful radio station or near a power line) use ascreened cable.

- Limit the length of the total bus to a maximum of150 m.

- Put terminators at the beginning and at the endof the connection (see also point and inFig. 9 on page 44).

- If an external S0 bus for the connection of thePBX to the NT is already available, you onlyhave to connect the Analog/ISDN Converter tothis bus with an ISDN connection cable.

The Analog/ISDN Converter works as areceiver of signals in this connectionbut not as a sender. Due to this it is not

important which connection type the NT has or ifother devices are connected to the NT.

If the PBX is connected to more thanone NT, you still connect the synchroni-zation with only one NT.

Devices without an own power sup-ply cannot be operated in parallel tothe PBX.

50 Configure ISDN Connections

The program user interface is dividedinto two parts: On the left side the indi-vidual themes are listed. On the right

side the page of the selected theme is open. Themenu bar is not necessary for processing thepages. All entries and changes are directly done

on the pages with the mouse or the keyboard onthe pages.

With the menu “Help” or with the F1 key you canopen a help file that offers you explanations aboutthe currently open page.

Connection type: Select the connection type forthe connection “Line ISDN” depending on the con-nection type of the connected ISDN device.

If the connection to the ISDN device isconfigured as Point-to-Point connec-tion, only the features AOCD, CLIR

and CLIP of the analog exchange line are support-ed. Therefore select Point-to-Multipoint interfaceon both devices if the connected ISDN device (e.g.PBX) allows both connection types.

TEI management (only for PtP connection):Select the TEI corresponding to the requested TEIof the connected ISDN device.

Under normal conditions the TEI “0” is necessaryfor the PBX (Ask the supplier of the ISDN device ifin doubt.).

Layer 1 configuration for the PBX ISDN port:Select the layer 1 activation that matches the con-nection type as well as the connected ISDN de-vice.

Deactivate Layer 1 if idle: The layer 1 is deacti-vated in a state of inactivity. Use this setting for a

Point-to-Multipoint connection type and if the per-manent activation of layer 1 shows problems.

Permanent Layer 1 activation: The layer 1 ispermanently activated. Use the following settingsfor the Point-to-Point connection type

Synchronization options for the ISDN syncinput: Select the layer 1 activation that matchesthe ISDN connection type used for synchroniza-tion of the Analog/ISDN Converter (optionally).

Passive (listen to Layer 1 only): The layer 1 ofthe NT is not activated by the Analog/ISDN Con-verter. That means that the synchronization willhappen only, if the layer 1 (e.g. in case of a Point-to-MultiPoint interface) is activated on request bythe connected PBX.

Use this configuration if the permanent activationof layer 1 (s. below Permanent Layer 1 activa-tion) shows problems and for the Point-to-Pointconnection type (the only useful setting in combi-nation with a Point-to-Point Connection).

Active (activate Layer 1 by outgoing call): Thelayer 1 of the NT is activated by the Analog/ISDNConverter, as soon as e.g. a call is pending. Thesynchronization happens as soon as the layer 1 ofthe NT is activated. Use this configuration to exe-cute the synchronization in case of a pending call.

Permanent Layer 1 activation: The layer 1 of theNT is permanently activated by the Analog/ISDNConverter. Use this configuration to activate thesynchronization permanently.

Timeout after last dialled digit: Enter the timeafter that the Analog/ISDN Converter recognizesthe end of the dialling process. The time measure-ment re-starts after each entered digit. After expi-ration of the configured time the Analog/ISDNConverter accepts the previously dialled numberas the last digit and does not allow any additionalnumber entries.

Configure ISDN Connections

Page 21: Analog/ISDN Converter - PHONE-MASTER · Introduction 33 The Analog/ISDN Converter enables you to attach an ISDN PBX or another ISDN device to two ana-log connections. …

Configuration, PC Program 51

As the Analog/ISDN Converter starts to transmitthe last digit after the expiration of the configuredtime to the central office, select this times as shortas possible.

The standard time for manual entries is approx.3 seconds. If telephone numbers are only dialleden bloc (e.g. devices with automatic speed diallingkey), the time may be lower.

To shorten the delay time between thelast digit and the connection setup, you

can always terminate a telephone number diallingwith a # (hash). The Analog/ISDN Converter rec-ognizes this sign as the end of a dialling.

If the destination number is part of a Point-to-Pointconnection, it may happen that the call will be redi-rected by the remote PBX after 4 seconds to thereception. To prevent this problem, you have toconfigure the time to less than 4 seconds.

Analog Line 1 and 2: Enter the external tele-phone numbers of both analog connections (if twoexist), so that they can be presented correctly bythe connected PBX (e.g. in the call charge man-agement and in the display of internal telephones).

Disabled: Activate this setting to select theunused analog input if the Analog/ISDN Converteris connected to a single analog connection only.

Overflow: Activate this setting to guarantee ahigher availability of the exchange lines. If the

selected line is busy, the other analog connectionwill be used (if it is not busy).

You have to assign these telephonenumbers as MSN or DDI on the exter-nal ISDN connection of the PBX.

These are used by the PBX e.g. for the call distri-bution and to select the exchange line.

Dialling mode: Select the dialling mode used bythe network provider.

The features 3PTY, HOLD, CFU, CFB,CFNR, CCBS and CLIR are often onlyavailable in connection with DTMF.

Therefore select DTMF if the network providerallows both dialling modes.

Metering pulses: Select the frequency used bythe network provider. In Germany 16 kHz is thestandard value.

Send “#”: Here you select whether the # (hash)attached to the telephone number as a sign for theend of a dialled number has to be transmitted alsoto the public exchange by the Analog/ISDN Con-verter.

Activate this setting if the attached # is necessarye.g. for special functions in an LCR router or forthe operation of a VoIP device.

Deactivate this setting if the attached # is only asign for the end of a dialling.

Configure Analog Connection

Page 22: Analog/ISDN Converter - PHONE-MASTER · Introduction 33 The Analog/ISDN Converter enables you to attach an ISDN PBX or another ISDN device to two ana-log connections. …

52 Configure Analog Connection

When performing the features sup-ported by the Analog/ISDN Converter(e.g. call forwarding) the # will be trans-

mitted to the central office independent of thissetting.

Length of the flash signal: Select the timerequired by the network provider. For the use offeatures provided by the network provider such asQuery or conferences often a longer flash time(e.g. 170-300 ms; in Germany a flash time of300 ms is necessary) is necessary. A flash timewhich is configured too long may be recognized asan on-hook by the central office.

Line impedance selection: Select the configura-tion matching to your network provider. This guar-antees the best voice quality on the lines.

Line Seizure

Wait for dial tone: Before the Analog/ISDN Con-verter starts to dial a number a dial tone detectionmay be performed to check the proper line sei-zure.

Activate this setting if the dial tone generated bythe central office is delayed by a longer time. Youwill prevent dialling errors by too early diallingattempts of the Analog/ISDN Converter. The Ana-log/ISDN Converter will dial as soon as it hasdetected a dial tone or after the delay time haselapsed.

Deactivate this setting if the dial tone of the cen-tral office is not reliable and may not be detectedcorrectly by the Analog/ISDN Converter. The Ana-log/ISDN Converter starts to dial after this delaytime has elapsed.

Waiting time (1 - 30 seconds): Enter the maxi-mum time to wait for the dial tone from the centraloffice. The Analog/ISDN Converter will start to dialafter this delay time has elapsed under any cir-cumstances.

Send automatic prefix: If the central office al-ways needs a certain digit sequence not belonging

to the number, you can add this digit sequence infront of the number automatically by the Analog/ISDN Converter. Activate this setting and enter thedigit sequence – if necessary with a following “,”(comma) as pause character.

Detect prefix and wait: If the central office needsa pause after a prefix code, you may add thispause automatically in the Analog/ISDN Converterafter a certain digit sequence. Activate this settingand enter the digit sequence (e.g. a provider ac-cess code). As soon as the Analog/ISDN Convert-er detects this digit sequence at the beginning of adialled number, the pause will be inserted beforedialling the following number.

Waiting time (1 - 6 seconds): Enter the time towait after the prefix code before the following digitsare dialled by the Analog/ISDN Converter.

Loop current detection1: If the network provideris supporting the loop current detection for detect-ing the line seizure, activate this function. If noloop current is detected, the line is considered tobe busy and – after checking the setting “Over-flow” – the other analog line will be used.

Start of Call (outbound call)

Busy tone detection: After dialling a number theAnalog/ISDN Converter can perform a busy tonedetection to check the busy status of the calledsubscriber.

If you activate this setting (recommended), thebusy tone of the central office will be detected bythe Analog/ISDN Converter. This is necessary toactivate the function CCBS (callback on busy) withinternal telephones of a PBX.

Line Reversal 1: If the network provider is sup-porting the line reversal at the start of the call, ac-tivate this function. The line reversal will be usedas a signal for the call start then.

1. This function will be available with hardware revision 5 (Rev. 5).

Page 23: Analog/ISDN Converter - PHONE-MASTER · Introduction 33 The Analog/ISDN Converter enables you to attach an ISDN PBX or another ISDN device to two ana-log connections. …

Configuration, PC Program 53

Detection time (1 - 30 seconds): Enter the max-imum time to wait for the busy tone from the cen-tral office. If the time elapsed and neither a busytone nor a line reversal has been detected, the An-alog/ISDN Converter would establish the connec-tion.

If the Analog/ISDN Converter detects a ringbacktone and a voice before the time has elapsed theconnection will also be established.

End of Call

Busy tone detection: After the Analog/ISDNConverter has established a connection, a busytone detection can be performed to monitor the on-hook of the remote call partner.

If you activate this setting (recommended), thebusy tone of the central office will be detected bythe Analog/ISDN Converter. This is necessary toenable the automatic disconnect feature of ISDNtelephones.

Deactivate this settings if interference on theexternal line is detected as busy tones by the Ana-log/ISDN Converter. This will disrupt the call. Thecall has to be disconnected by the subscriber atthe side of the Analog/ISDN Converter in thiscase.

Minimum length of busy tone (2 - 20 seconds):Enter the minimum detection time for the busytone sequence monitored by the Analog/ISDNConverter. This way it will be prevented that voiceis detected as busy tones.

Loop current detection1: If the network provideris supporting the loop current detection for detect-ing the line seizure, activate this function. If noloop current is detected, the line is considered tobe busy.

DTMF digit “D”: If the network provider is sendingthe DTMF digit “D” at the end of the call, activatethis function. A DTMF digit “D” will be detected asthe signal for the end of the call then.

Line Reversal 1: If the network provider is sup-porting the line reversal at the end of the call, acti-vate this function. The line reversal will be used asa signal for the end of the call then.

If you deactivate “Wait for dial tone”and all kinds of “Busy tone detec-tion”, the connection will be established

right after dialling. This may be necessary for auto-matic call answering devices, but prevents theAnalog/ISDN Converter to detect the busy tone atthe end of a connection. In this case the callanswering device must put the call on hook (e.g.by an acoustic busy tone detection integrated intothis device).

1. This function will be available with hardware revision 5 (Rev. 5).

54 Configure Features

The Analog/ISDN Converter translates ISDN fea-tures of the ISDN device to features of the analognetwork provider.

Make sure with help of the manual of the con-nected ISDN device that it supports the corre-sponding ISDN features.

Ask your network provider which features are sup-ported by the analog central office and which digitsequences are necessary for the operation.

If the connection to the ISDN device isconfigured as a PtP connection, onlythe features AOCD, CLIR and CLIP of

the analog central office will be supported.

Call Forwarding (CF): The Analog/ISDN Con-verter enables the translation of the features CFU(CF unconditional), CFB (CF on busy) and CFNR(CF on no reply).

If you activate each of these three features, youwill be able to enter two digit sequences for eachfeatures - one for the activation of the call forward-ing including entering the destination number andone for the deactivation of the call forwarding.

Ask your analog network provider about the nec-essary digit sequences and enter them into thecorresponding fields.

An “n” is entered as a placeholder forthe destination number. This destina-tion number is sent by the ISDN device

during the activation of this function.

In the manual of Auerswald PBXs the ISDN fea-tures CFU, CFB and CFNR are named MSN/DDICall Forwarding via the central office to make adifference from other types of CF.

Query & 3PTY: The Analog/ISDN Converter ena-bles the translation of the features HOLD (Queryand Alternation) and 3PTY (Conference).

If you activate the feature HOLD, you may entertwo digit sequences - one to finish a Query call andone for the Alternation.

If you activate the feature 3PTY, you may enterfive digit sequences – one to start a conferenceand four to finish the conference in different ways.Depending on the type of finish, the following callwill continue with the first (B) or the second (C)calling partner. The corresponding other callingpartner will be on hold or disconnected.

Ask your analog network provider about the nec-essary digit sequences and enter them into thecorresponding fields.

“R” is entered as a placeholder for aFlash and a “ ,” (comma) for a break ofa second.

For some of the Auerswald PBXs alternation andconference are only available as a PBX feature viathe 2nd B-channel.

Call Back: The Analog/ISDN Converter enablesthe translation of the feature CCBS (callback onbusy).

If you activate the feature CCBS, you may enter adigit sequence to start a callback. Ask your analognetwork provider about the necessary digitsequence and enter it into the corresponding field.

“R” is entered as a placeholder for aFlash and a “ ,” (comma) for a break ofa second.

Besides this the busy tone detection has to beactivated under “External connections...Analogconnections”.

CLIR: The Analog/ISDN Converter enables theactivation of the feature CLIR (on-request presen-tation suppression of the own telephone number).

If you activate the feature CLIR, you may enter adigit sequence to start a call with telephonenumber presentation suppression. Ask your net-work provider about the necessary digit sequenceand enter it into the corresponding field.

“R” is entered as a placeholder for aFlash, an “n” for the number and a “ ,”(comma) for a break of a second.

56 Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Here some common problems and their possiblecauses are listed:

Problem: Dialling fails.

– Possible cause: Dialling tone from the centraloffice is distorted or delayed.Solution: Change the setting “Wait for dial tone”(see page 52).

– Possible cause: Manual dialling is too slowly.Solution: Increase the value of the “Timeoutafter last dialled digit” (see page 50).

– Possible cause: Dialling en bloc, e.g. from thetelephone book or the redial list, is not recog-nised.Solution: Under “External connections...Analogconnections” adapt the line impedance to theexchange line or the device connected ahead.(note the country in brackets).

Problem: Query leads to disconnect.

– Possible cause: Flash time is too long. Solution: Reduce the value for “Flash time” (seepage 52).

Problem: Interruption of calls.

– Possible cause: Interferences on the line arerecognized as busy tones.Solution: Deactivate the setting “Busy tonedetection” (see page 53).

Problem: Mailbox access does not work.

– Possible cause: # is not sent to the centraloffice.Solution: Activate the function “send #” (seepage 51).

Problem: The telephone rings but you are onlyhearing the dial tone after picking up thereceiver.

– Possible cause: The Analog/ISDN Converter isable to detect the end of an incoming ringingcall, if the pause between the ringing signals islonger than the maximum duration (this pause isnormally 5 seconds; if you select the “lineimpedance” for Denmark it will be 9 seconds). Ifthe caller is going on hook within this pause the

telephone will continue to ring until this time hasbeen exceeded.Solution: This problem is of systematic natureand cannot be solved technically.

Problem: During an outgoing call the displayof the ISDN telephone is switching into theconnection state after a long delay.

– Possible cause: If “Wait for dial tone” and “Busytone detection” are activated, the Analog/ISDNConverter initially tries to detect if the calledpartner is busy. This detection method is basedon the detection of tones for analog connec-tions. After dialling there might be a longer timenecessary to establish the connection itself(especially for mobile phone or internationalcalls). So in the first 30 seconds, the tone detec-tion will be made and after that the “connected”status will be signalled.Solution: Shorten the “Waiting time” (page 52)and the “Detection time” (page 52).

Problem: A call partner on hold is disconnect-ing the call. The busy tone detection is activebut the exchange line connection will not bedisconnected by the Analog/ISDN Converter.

– Possible cause: If you are making an externalcall via analog line with your PBX and put thiscall on hold the Music on Hold will be sent to theanalog line. If your external call partner on holdis disconnecting the call in this status, the cen-tral office will play the busy tone. Now there aretwo tones on the line (busy tone and Music onHold) which are mixed. The busy tone detectionmay not be reliable for this mixture of tones.Consequently the line will not be disconnectedautomatically as expected.

– Solution: It is recommended to fade out theMusic on Hold (which will be played in a loop) atthe end and add 2 seconds o silence. In thistone of silence the busy tone may be detectedreliably.
