Anacapa Yacht Club Mainsheet Volume 2013 Issue 3 March 2013 1 Commodores Report: MIKE TAYLOR Greetings Anacapa Yacht Club: Wow 2013 is really kicking into gear! It seems like a long time back that the 49’ers put up the good fight and came up a little short. The Superbowl party at the club was a big hit with a full room and plenty of sportsmanship (I think that is what you call all the bantering). This year brings a new twist at AYC with Wet Wednesdays starting right after the time change on Sunday March 10 th at 2 AM. Based on the current weather it does not look so bad, however since the dredging of the harbor was not completely done we will be challenged with encroaching shoal near the North detached breakwall for the race starts. The alternative is of course to start outside the detached. We have a new committee kicking off this Thursday, March 7 with their 1 st meeting. It is the Strategic Planning Committee and the committee chair is Richard Sharpe. They are going to being surveying our membership for everybody’s input about our club. Things that should stay the same, things that should change and defining goals and plans for the future. “For the people by the people” I encourage all members to give this a lot of thought and voice your opinion, concerns and ideas. It has been awhile since our move from across the harbor, we are no longer in survival mode so it would be good to think outside the box about our future. Opening days for all the Ventura County clubs are on April 6 th and 7 th . Our time is Sunday April 7 th at 10 AM. We will be having a club clean-up/polish the brass afternoon - evening on The Friday prior and appreciate everyone’s help. Opening Day is a great time to wear your Blue Blazer with white skirt or pants and show your AYC pride. We expect as usual around 100 attendees and will have the rear patio set-up with a tent and chairs. Attendees include members from other yacht clubs, local government and the marine industry. It is quite impressive to watch the color guard, raising of the flags, national anthem and introductions. Don’t forget our Vice Commodore has to take a drink whenever he mispronounces a name. As always there will be breakfast finger foods, coffee and drinks available. Look forward to seeing all of you on the water or at the club. Remember life is simple, people are what make it complicated. Sail more and keep it simple. Regards, Mike Taylor Commodore

The month ended with our general meeting and Doug and Kailn Dodge gave us a mouth watering build your own taco and burrito bar. Thank you everyone for the great meals we are having almost every Friday night. Last but the most important is that our Opening Day is coming on April 7th. We will be having an House Keeping Pizza Party on Friday April 5th. RACING, RACING and more RACING…

Ahoy AYC-ers, The month of March kicks off a mad rush of racing for the club with several races taking place and the start of the Wet Wednesday race series on March 13th that everyone in the harbor looks forward to. This year we are extending the Wet Wednesday race series by 10 races and we will be deeming the first 8 races of the series as warm up races and awarding the high point leaders of each class in the warm up races with a nice trophy to take home. We are also going to be running our famous St. Patrick’s Day Race on March 9th. Pete and Gloria Casamassima are hosting the after race dinner with there famous Corned-Beef & Cabbage main course and all the trimmings. In addition to these races, we will be hosting two TGIS races, one on March 10th #3 and another one on March 17th #4. This is the series that we host with PCYC. The TGIS series is really gaining some ground this year with more participation and we hope to see more boats get involved as we grow and develop this program with our friends at PCYC.
