Advocacy - WHAT
➢Advocacy encompasses a wide range of activities that influence decision makers.
➢Advocacy includes traditional activities such as litigation, lobbying, and public education. It can also include capacity building, relationship building, forming networks, and leadership development.

Why are you advocating for NPs
Because:
➢ YOU are an RN and understand scope of practice – i.e.-standardized procedures
➢ YOU are part of the RN family that can be the health care solution. Describe how you work along side NP’s!
➢ What YOU do makes a difference in health care for Californians - better care, lower costs, improved access
➢ YOU are the RN champions of change and continued improvements in health care and access would occur with FPA NP’s

➢In-person visits, letters, and emails are most persuasive if the legislator has not made a firm decision on an issue
➢Content Experts bear more weight than lobbyist – so your visits are crucial

How! Compelling Message, Inspire and Influence
➢ Ponder, analyze and decide
➢ See, feel, decide
➢Head, heart, health – evoke an emotion
➢Use a 2-4 minute story, begin with the end in mind, what is the want? Opening – set the stage, paint the picture using adjectives, describe the struggle and play the underdog, surprise the legislator, introduce potential for success, make everyone a winner

The Message – an example
➢ RNs & NPs are the states secret weapon for health care transformation with a win for AB 890 – your support can make the difference, we request your “aye” vote
➢ APNs in 28 other states were granted full practice authority and have decreased costs, and improved care, particularly in primary care areas
➢ I work along side an NP in my hospital. Between us, our patients receive not only outstanding medical care treatment but necessary whole person care and coordination, so the patients receive their care at the right place at the right time. Oftentimes our patients remark that working with the NP is less stressful. The NPs spend more time with them and listen.

The Message – an example
➢Have you been cared for by an NP? Wouldn’t you be glad to have a person that could diagnose and treat your medical needs as well as treat your psychosocial needs at the same time?
➢ FP NPs could exponentially add to the ability for California to provide primary care services in a more timely manner
➢ You can be the game changer, by acknowledging, FP NPs are an integral solution, with a yes vote on AB 890.

Why is nursing and advanced practice nursing advocacy so important now?
➢RNs focus on the person’s response to health and Illness – person
➢Advanced Practice Nurses do both! RNs do both when operating under SPs.
➢RNs are front line ambassadors to patient quality and safety- prevent failure to rescue
➢ Societal dilemmas – homelessness, loneliness, substance abuse, health care access – society & health policy 29
