G1 phase: InterphaseThe formation of cells takes energy! The time needed by the new cells to replenish their energy causes a "gap". After cell energy reserves are restored, the cells begin to grow. This is the longest phase of the cell cycle.

S phaseSynthesis means to make. After a period of growth, each cell's original DNA is duplicated in the process of replication.

9G2 phaseThe replication of DNA also takes a lot of energy!

The time taken by a cell to build up its energy reserves produces a second "gap".10MitosisThe process by which the DNA is divided into two identical sets before the cell divides.Prophase MetaphaseAnaphase Telophase Cytokinesis11MitosisPMATProphaseMetaphaseAnaphaseTelophase

13Prophase Chromatin coils to form chromosomes, nuclear membrane disappears, and centrioles prepare to move to opposite sides of the cell.

16MetaphaseFibers move the chromosomes to the equator (middle) of the cell.

17

18Anaphase The centromere of each pair of chromatids divides, separate and are pushed to opposite poles (apart) of the cell by the spindle fibers.

19

20Telophase All spindle fibers disappear, chromatids unwind and stretch as a nuclear membrane forms around each mass of chromatin.

Cytokinesis:Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm of a parent cell.

The cell pinches together roughly in the center.

CancerCancer is a disease of the cell cycle. Some of the bodys cells divide uncontrollably and tumors form. 30Chemical Signals tell a cell when to start and stop dividing.

3232Treating CancersCancer treatments include drugs that can stop cancer cells from dividing.
