A perfect location in the heart of the U.S. Northeast and a world-class
transportation infrastructure offering unsurpassed access to national
and international markets have helped make New Jersey an international
gateway and growing hub for logistics and distribution.
Located in the center of one of the most concentrated and affluent consumer
markets in the world, a distribution center in central New Jersey can serve
more than 22 million consumers with nearly $800 billion in income within a
2-hour drive. This makes New Jersey ideal for same-day deliveries, attracting
companies like Amazon, Blue Apron, Fresh Direct, HelloFresh, Peapod and
ShopRite.
In fact, New Jersey’s strategic location offers easy access via road, rail, air
or sea to virtually every place on the planet. Nearly 25,000 transportation,
logistics and distribution establishments are located in New Jersey,
including companies like Barnes & Noble, Coca-Cola, Crate & Barrel,
Destination Maternity, Goya Foods, The Home Depot, Subaru, Volkswagen,
Wakefern Food Corporation, Williams-Sonoma and W.W. Grainger.

ONE OF AMERICA’S BUSIEST SEAPORTS
New Jersey is home to the Port of New York and New Jersey, the 3rd largest
seaport in North America and the largest and busiest maritime cargo center
on the East Coast. Ranked #1 in the Jones Lang LaSalle Seaport Index for
three consecutive years, the deep water Port of New York and New Jersey
offers quick and easy transport of goods and products to national and
international markets.
Managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the deep
water ports of Newark, Elizabeth and Bayonne, when combined with the
Authority’s regional air cargo network, serve as a North American gateway
for international freight and a leading hub for domestic cargo. The port
handles every type of cargo imaginable including containers, roll-on/roll-off
automobiles (Ro-Ro), liquid and dry bulk, breakbulk and specialized project
cargo, with 54 container cranes ready to handle all types of cargo. The dollar
value of all cargo that moved through the port was $200 billion in 2016.
The ExpressRail system provides direct ocean-to-rail intermodal capabilities,
with on-dock rail lines. Three port companies supply floating derricks,
including the largest on the East Coast. In addition, the area hosts a wide
selection of freight forwarders, brokers, financial firms, specialized export
packers and other services to move cargo efficiently and quickly from the port
to its destination by road or rail.
To accommodate post-Panamax activity at Port Newark/Elizabeth, a
$1.3 billion rebuilding project to raise the clearance of the Bayonne Bridge
was completed. The project raised the bridge’s clearance to 215 feet to
accommodate larger ships coming from Asia to the East Coast after the
expansion of the Panama Canal.
New Jersey also boasts one of the largest contiguous foreign trade zones in
the U.S. FTZ #49 encompasses 2,100 acres at the Port Newark/Elizabeth
Marine Terminal, plus another 1,800 acres at several sub-zones in the area.
A major development project has also been completed at the Paulsboro
Marine Terminal on the Delaware River in South Jersey. The South Jersey
Port Corporation (SJPC) in conjunction with Holt Logistics Corp. constructed
a new, state-of-the-art marine terminal. The 190-acre facility is the first new
multi-purpose marine terminal to be constructed on the Delaware River in
over 50 years and is a modern multi-faceted facility that will increase shipping
capacity for a full range of commodities.
