An index to the arms in W. Bruce Bannerman (ed.), The Visitations of Kent..., 2 vols. (Harleian Society, vols. 74 & 75, 1923-1924) by John Blythe Dobson In order to facilitate reference to the work mentioned in the title, we have extracted the 888 coats of arms blazoned in the quarterings and impalements throughout the work, and through collation, and comparison with the accompanying pedigrees, attempted to identify as many of them possible. The descriptions have are given in a standardised form, the rules for the creation of which follow, and the index is in two parts: (1) by blazon, and (2) by family name, where known. Most of the entries in (2) are already furnished by the book’s own index, but a substantial number are analytical, and form what we hope will be a useful supplement to it. In this index, marks of cadence which are recorded as “for difference” are not recorded in the blazons. Details of the blazon are spelled out as clearly as possible. Phrases in the original blazons referring to previously-mentioned tinctures such as “of the same,” “of the field,” “of the second,” “of the last” are converted into explicit references to the relevant tincture. Likewise, the phrase “as many” referring back to a number has been turned into an explicit mention of the number. On the other hand, to save space, some phrases have been simplified or replaced by shorter equivalents. Thus numbers have been written as numerals, “semée of crosses- crosslet” becomes “crusily,” “semée of crosses-crosslet fitchy” becomes “crusily-fitchy,” “(all) within a bordure,” becomes simply “a bordure,” “pierced of the field” and “voided of the field” become “voided.” We have occasionally had to resort to somewhat arbitrary abbreviations, but we trust the meaning will be obvious from the context. In the BLAZON column Everything in parentheses — ( ) — was added by the original editor Everything in square brackets — [ ] — has been added by J.B.D. —— = tincture unknown single underlining indicates material added by editors of Visitations double underlining indicates material added by J.B.D. betw. = between chf = chief dxtr = dexter ch. = ch. chev. = chevron ctr = counter ctrch. = counterchanged er. = erased qu. = quarter qu’s = quarters pass. = passant ramp. = rampant snstr = sinister 5-foil = cinquefoil In the NAME column Everything in square brackets — [ ] — has been added by J.B.D. In order to facilitate reference to the work mentioned in the title, we have extracted the 888 coats of arms blazoned in the quarteringsand impalements throughout the work, and through collation, and comparison with the accompanying pedigrees, attempted to identifyas many of them possible. The descriptions have are given in a standardised form, the rules for the creation of which follow, and theindex is in two parts: (1) by blazon, and (2) by family name, where known. Most of the entries in (2) are already furnished by the book’sown index, but a substantial number are analytical, and form what we hope will be a useful supplement to it.

In this index, marks of cadence which are recorded as “for difference” are not recorded in the blazons. Details of theblazon are spelled out as clearly as possible. Phrases in the original blazons referring to previously-mentioned tinctures such as “of thesame,” “of the field,” “of the second,” “of the last” are converted into explicit references to the relevant tincture. Likewise, the phrase“as many” referring back to a number has been turned into an explicit mention of the number. On the other hand, to save space, somephrases have been simplified or replaced by shorter equivalents. Thus numbers have been written as numerals, “semée of crosses-crosslet” becomes “crusily,” “semée of crosses-crosslet fitchy” becomes “crusily-fitchy,” “(all) within a bordure,” becomes simply“a bordure,” “pierced of the field” and “voided of the field” become “voided.” We have occasionally had to resort to somewhatarbitrary abbreviations, but we trust the meaning will be obvious from the context.
