A little faster, staccato

Do not pause on any pitch

Improvise on these five pitch, using long periods of silence or low, pianissimo notespunctuated by sporadic, chaotic, geometric sounding bursts, for 33 measures, or approximately3 minutes and 18 seconds. If possible, use the opening motive. This is a good time to make useof extended techniques. You may also create a motive here to use in submovement 10. Withreference to the novel, thinking up a motive and then only playing fragments of it may be in order,as per your interpretation.

Use the same guidelines for improvisation here as explained for submovement VIII. This time, however, it should last for exactly 50 measures (at 60 bpm, 3 minutes and 20 seconds),and contain more silent sections, especially towards the end, in preparation for the second movement.Look to the ending of submovement IX for a general idea.
