The Last Chance Rescue Filter® is an emergency escape device that integrates directly into the SCBA system to give firefighters in an out of air emergency the vital time to perform a self rescue.Essex manufactures a Last Chance Rescue Filter® that is compatible with the following OEM SCBA’s:

• Draeger• MSA• Scott• Sperian – only available through Sperian Distributors

• ISI - RDV face mask adapters are available, but are not in production

• If you are still not out of the structure, and you’re almost out of air…

• Remove filter from the Outer Protective Cover

• Grasp the two balls and tear open the pouch

• Filter is ready for donning

• Isolate yourself from the fire

• Supplied air is #1! Use your air tank until you can no longer get air to your mask

• Take the final breath from the SCBA and hold it

• Remove your regulator and insert the canister

• Lock in the filter the same way you would connect your secondary regulator

• Exhale once the canister is locked in place!

• Exhaling will push any products of combustion back through the filter and exhalation valves

• Be prepared for the switch from positive air pressure to negative

• Stay low to the ground and breathe at floor level

• This is where the oxygen will be most abundant and the air coolest

Last Chance Trainers:

• Red, washable, reusable canister with similar breathing resistance and weight with identical SCBA mask adapter

• Nylon-based re-sealable pouch with red tear indicators and Velcro which simulates resistance to tear

• Firefighters should train with the Last Chance Rescue Filter® Trainer until comfortable


User Training:

• Operating with the Last Chance Rescue Filter® in an out-of-air emergency

• Update RIT Branch Officer

• Exit the structure or seek area of refuge, depending on the situation

• Activate PASS intermittently

• Keep RIT team updated as to your location

• In the extreme case of SCBA harness entrapment, remove the SCBA to escape


• Retrieval of a firefighter who used the Last Chance Rescue Filter®

• One firefighter determines consciousness and switches downed firefighter back to supplied air

• If firefighter is not conscious, be sure to open bypass valve to ensure air supply

• If necessary, another firefighter converts the firefighter’s SCBA into a harness for removal

• Last Chance Rescue Filter® makes it easier to place the firefighter back on air, as their mask will still be in place

User Training:


Inspection & Warranty:

• Inspect Last Chance Rescue Filter® during normal SCBA daily or shift inspections

• Inspect Last Chance Rescue Filter® during the SCBA monthly inspection and log into OSHA inspection sheet


• The Last Chance Rescue Filter® is covered under a warranty for the life of the product.

• If loss of vacuum is found, turn it over to an officer in charge – who will send to the manufacturer

Inspection & Warranty:


Deploy / Administration:

• Options for filter being deployed • Incorporate Last Chance Rescue Filter®protocol into department’s respiratory protection program

• SOP’s must stress that filter is for emergency use only

• The Last Chance Rescue Filter® is not meant to extend operating time in the structure


Service Life and Replacement Program:

• 5 year service life if filter remains sealed in the protective pouch

• Essex will replace, for FREE, any Last Chance Rescue Filter® used in an out-of-air emergency

• Must be documented in Fire Report• Letter must be sent to Fire Chief• See the Emergency Escape & Replacement Program


Escape and Replacement Program:

NOTE: For increased accountability and to prevent misuse. The manufacturer suggests that Fire Departments incorporate the Last Chance Rescue Filter® into the departments Respiratory Protection Plan, SOP’s and SCBA training program. Essex will supply, upon request, a Sample Respiratory Protection Plan, on how to incorporate the LCRF.

Last Chance Rescue Filter® Replacement Program

Essex PB&R Corp will replace, FREE of charge, any Last Chance Rescue Filter used in an emergency situation as long as the following criteria is met:

1. Letter on department letterhead sent to Essex PB&R Corp outlining incident # and the events that lead to use of emergency filter. The Chief or other ranking officer must sign the letter.2. Letter of testimonial for firefighter or firefighters who utilized filter.3. If possible, contact information for anyone who may have photos of the incident. 4. Send used filter to Essex PB&R for evaluation.

By participating in the free replacement program the department gives Essex PB&R permission to utilize letter and testimonial, to use, publish or reprint in whole or in part the provided statements, pictures, and or quotations regarding the experience with the product.
