An Energy Management Institute Training Program

This course will provide a thorough understanding of the history, the current state of development, as well as, a look into the future of petroleum geology and the energy industry. We will also be examining the key issues of technological advances, new E&P provinces, environmental concerns and market implications.

At the conclusion of the class, the participant will have gained a thorough introduction to the dynamics of exploring and developing oil and gas particularly through the geological (and geophysical) contribution. The global implications for continued progress in finding new conventional and unconventional resources is outlined in conclusion.

Topics covered include:

• TheRoleoftheGeologist - Overview Geology and Earth History - Geologist Functions and Contributions - Geology and Seismology Concepts - Tools and Terminology

• ThePetroleumSystem - Origin of hydrocarbons - Essential elements of a productive petroleum system - Reserve estimation and Global Reserves Outlook

Introduction to Petroleum GeologyMay 20-21, 2013 -- Regus Conference Center -- Houston, TX

The new crew shift of workers in the oil and gas industry is underway. Conventional fields and plays need ongoing attention in the historically productive regions. Deep sea exploration and production efforts continue worldwide. The recent unconventional developments of shale gas and tight oil production in the U.S. have energized the demand for oil patch workers across the country. The shear size and locations of the production areas have made shale gas the most significant change to the North American energy complex in the last ten years. Tight oil production from a variety of geologic formations is also increasing rates and reserves and looks to be another game-changer employing similar technology application of horizontal drilling and hydrofracturing used in shale gas development.

With the pending impact of the new workers on the global energy complex, it is critical to understand all the implications and issues associated with conventional as well as unconventional exploration and production techniques. The energy professional will need to be well-versed in regards to petroleum geology principles for maximum contribution and team coordination.

Session 6: FutureTrends and Global Market Implications (1.5 hrs)

It makes sense to take a brief look at this aspect of the industry and the plays and processes making headlines today. What moves oil and natural gas prices? How are overall market values established? How will new trends affect old trading relationships ? These and other topics will be addressed as we look at the changing financial side of the market. Just a few years ago natural gas peaked at record high price levels and the industry was abuzz with the prospect of importing liquefied natural gas. Today the situation is vastly different with talk of the U.S. as a potential exporter. Will increased supply lead to increased demand and higher prices, or will a glut of product depress overall market values?

Session 1: Role of the Geologist (1hr)

Course Syllabus

The building blocks of understanding how geologists function within the minerals extraction industry is reviewed. Distinction is made for primary focus on oil and gas (petroleum) geologists and their counterparts, geophysicists. A brief history is provided of the contributions of geologists to the petroleum industry including recent shale gas and tight oil production success. An overview is given of the exploration and production process.

Gain knowledge of the earth history and forces that led to the geologic basins we rely on for a variety of fossil fuels (origin of hydrocarbons and geologic dating methods). Essential elements of a productive petroleum system are introduced (source rock, reservoir, seal, traps, timing). The traditional concepts and tools utilized by the geologist (surface and subsurface mapping, cross-sections, well log data and interpretation, seismic data introduction) are presented including general terminology.

Session 3: Exploration and Prospect Evaluation (2.5 hrs)

We’ll explore how petroleum geologists find prospective formations, plays or trends and evaluate their prospectivity for exploration investment. The differences between conventional and unconventional plays are examined. An in-class exercise is conducted utilizing seismic and geologic data to evaluate a potential exploration target. Reserve/resource estimation and post-exploration appraisal processes are presented including a review of global exploration resources in the major provinces with some recent significant discoveries highlighted.

Introduction to Petroleum GeologyMay 20-21, 2013 -- Regus Conference Center -- Houston, TX

Session 2: Basic Geology Concepts and Tools (2 hrs)

Session 5: Infrastructure and Environmental Issues (1.5 hrs)

Now that we understand E&P fundamentals, the resulting production must be processed for consumer-quality purposes and brought to market. This session will look at the basic steps required to make pipeline grade product and the distribution systems used in transportation. The oil and gas industry serves many different consumers including utilities, commercial and industrial users, as well as residential customers that we will explore. The geologist continues to have input for decisions regarding such things as pipeline routes, soil suitability, aquifer endangerment, waste water processing, hydrofracking.

Session 4: Production and Field Development (2.5 hrs)

Once exploration and appraisal success has been achieved, production options must be considered. The geological input continues to play a key role. The critical factors and decision process that comprise determination of the appropriate field development path are introduced with a software example/in-class exercise (using PetroVRtm). Vertical drilling, horizontal drilling, and hydraulic fracturing are all important aspects production. An appreciation is gained for the continued geological input required for these decisions. Global production reserves estimates in the major provinces is presented in overview.
