How do governments prevent and resolve conflicts and try to meet personal and social needs? (MO 1.3, 1.6)

This lesson will address the following Hazelwood Objectives:

Interpret reasons for conflict among groups in U.S. society.(Change 1850-1900)

Analyze and evaluate decisions made to handle group conflict in the United States after the Civil War. (Change 1850-1900)

When immigrants came to America, some people thought they were very brave. Other people thought the immigrants were very foolish. Why was it considered such a big risk for the immigrants to leave their homeland and journey to America?

DISCUSS...

WRITE...Pretend that you are facing a government in which you have no faith. You hear of a better place far away, but it may be a dangerous journey. Make a pros/cons list for leaving your homeland in your journal. Don’t stop writing until you have at least five things on each side of your list.

PROS (for leaving)

CONS (for leaving)

Leaving friends and family.

May die on the boat ride from starvation or disease.

May not ever reach my destination….may get lost.

Will be starting over….with little or no material possessions.

May not speak the language of my desired homeland.

May have more opportunities for fortune.

Will escape religious intolerance.

May avoid jail time for speaking what I think.

Life may be more industrial in my new homeland.I may have some say in the development of a new government.
