Way - Whitehouse Memorial AMVETS Post 35 Inc Commanders Message July was a fairly quiet month for the Post after all the activities in June. Independence Day saw a larger crowd than normal at the Post that day as we fried fish and shrimp and grilled. We will be gearing up for the fall festivities leading into our holiday season. We will be having a flag retire- ment ceremony at the August General Membership Meeting. In October we always have Hallow- een Parties, and then November brings our Veteran’s Day Service at the Memorial Wall by the courthouse. This year our Post will be hosting the ceremony. I will need volunteers to assist in setting that up. That leads right into our Meals-0n-Wheels for Thanksgiving and Christmas along with our Christmas Party. There has been some discussion about the status of the building expansion. The next building committee meeting is TBD at this time. The date and time will be posted in the Post and on the Web Site. Check out the calendar and our website for other upcoming events. Yours In Service Craig Sarrasin Commander Auxiliary President The 4 th of July Basket Raffle winner was John Wolford who stated when he purchased the tickets “I never win anything.” Boy was he surprised! Thanks to everyone who bought raffle tickets of which the proceeds are being sent to Shelter House. By your generosity, we are able to help those who need it! If you weren’t able to make the Shrimp Boil on July 11 th , you missed a wonderful opportunity for a delicious meal! Many thanks goes to a few good men – Brad, Virgil and Preston for helping us out. It just shows that you don’t have to be a member of a certain group to help out when needed. The proceeds of that and the raffle that night are going to the Wounded Warrior Foundation. We are having a Wings Compe- tition on Friday, August 8 th from 5:30pm to 7:30 pm. Anyone can enter -and to eat all the delicious wings and sides and of course “dessert” it is just $6.00 per per- son for those who would like to enjoy a tasty meal. Look for fly- ers at the post for the particulars and also on the website for the flyer. The proceeds from that event are going to the Alzhei- mer’s Organization. It’s an important cause and just a few items donat- ed per person will make a huge difference in a child’s life. For those of you who cook, we have a box located in both re- strooms at the post for box tops. For each box top it’s worth 10 cents each and will help a local school. It just takes a minute to clip it off and drop it by the post. There is a flyer there that covers all the different ones that you can do this with. Every little bit helps. We are going to have several ex- citing events during the year and you can keep abreast of the activ- ities by checking the website, fa- cebook page, stopping by the post or better yet, come to a meeting! We meet the first Tuesday of each month and would love to have more member involvement. Remember that we are part of an organization that is here to help others. This post does so much for each other and within this community. Without the support of each of you, it couldn’t happen. We have a lot of new faces but haven’t seen a lot of the old faces. Not talking age either. I come to this post because I love it. I enjoy listening to all of you in tough times and bad times. I love to just hang out and BS with everybody. For the past 6 months, a lot of you are being missed greatly. I hope that soon, those that have stopped coming in, will trickle back to us. We are trying to set up a date next month for a “Comedian Night”. Now that’s different. So I hope we all can get together and have a good laugh next month. Remember, we all come from different walks in life, different attitudes, views and beliefs. When we come to the post, please treat each other with re-spect and indifference, take noth-ing personal and just have a great time. With that said, the men’s urinal has been fixed. Please do not use the handle as a game joystick. And for those that have not been able to come out to Bingo lately, you missed a good night of laughter on the 16th. Hope to see you back soon. Respectfully, Sherrie Scanlan Chairman of the Board

The Riders will be hosting our 5th an-nual USO benefit Ride. This event will be held on Sept. 20th here at Post 35. We will include a poker run, a $5.00 plate lunch, and some raffles. See our flyer coming soon for the rest of the details. Hope to see all our members of the post come out and share in the good times, plus help us support the USO with a nice donation from our post this year as we have done in the past. I would also like to inform our post, that we will have 2 delegates, Clay White, and Shawn Anderson, and Te-resa White as an alternate in attendance at the National Executive Convention (NEC) this year. They will be support-ing our post for Riders Chapter 35. This will be held in Memphis Tennes-see this year. I am also proud to announce that one of our very own Shawn Anderson, has been asked to be an assistant to the National Riders Sargent at Arms, Larry Saad during attendance at the National Convention. I would like to thank and welcome all the new officers for the AMVETS Rid-ers Chapter 35: Bob Mofford President Jim Meager. 1st. Vice Biff Walls. 2nd. Vice Betty Maurer. Secretary Shay Reader Treasurer Javier Hernandez. Chaplin Clay White. Judge Advocate Shawn Anderson SAA Safe riding to all, and enjoy the jour-ney along the way! We're starting into the fall season, and there will be a lot of activities to enjoy and get involved in at the Post. Be sure to take advantage of these events and help out where you can. It's almost time for school to start, so be careful of those kids at the bus stops! As part of that, Calva-ry United church is sponsoring the Back to School Bash at the Old Spanish trail park on Friday, August 15 (no time announced). They'll be giving away back-packs, school supplies, and other free gifts. If you'd like to get in-volved please give them a call. Also in August, the Emerald Coast Association of Realtors will be sponsoring Soldiers on the Water, a day of fishing for Wounded Warriors. This starts at 6:30 and includes both deep sea and inshore fishing, and the day will end with a fish fry for the participants. To register for this go to their web site at http://bit.ly/SoundersontheWater or call 850-714-4663. Kudos to those of you who've collected your soaps, shampoos and lotions from hotels during your travels this summer. Please drop them by the Post so I can get them to MHA to build the ditty bags for the upcoming Stand Down. We can also us assistance for this event, both with setup on September 25 and for the event on the September 26. As usual, this event will be at the Presbyter-ian Church in Ft Walton Beach staring at 8AM. If you are looking for another way to give back to the communi-ty, consider becoming a Mentor for Veterans Treatment Court.

This program, started by Judge Pat Maney, provides an alterna-tive for those Veterans who have broken the law but whose under-lying issues may be PTSD or sub-stance abuse issues. The Vet must agree to undergo treatment and abide by the rules of the pro-gram for one year, and, if he/she successfully completes the pro-gram, avoid jail time. The pro-gram needs mentors to guide these individuals in the program. Training is provided, and they really need some female mentors. Contact Krystal Smith at 850-244-1040 for more information. Keep on volunteering, and report your programs! Yours in Service, Liz Westby [email protected]

Canteen Manager I can’t believe it’s August already. Time has flown by. As some of you request certain liquors, we now have them, so come enjoy them. As I al-ways say I need to know what you all want to make it happen. As we start to head into the fall we will get busier. Keep your eyes on the calen-dar, website and Facebook. I try to keep it posted as much as possible. With that note if I don’t have infor-mation on something then I can’t post it. I need to be kept informed too. Next month will be 100% Member-ship ID check. I know you all think this is a pain but, please bear with us it’s the bylaws that we are uphold-ing. I thank you all in advanced for not giving the bartenders grief. Just a recap for all of you through this pro-cess; EVERY BARTENDER NEEDS TO SEE YOUR CUR-RENT MEMBERSHIP CARD. On that note of being kept informed I need to inform you all that I have given my resignation due to person-al/family circumstances. This is my official letter for resignation. I would like to begin by saying, thank you. Now before my official leave in Sep-tember, I want to acknowledge with deep thanks your many kindnesses to me during the years that I worked for you. It’s not everyone who has a supportive team that is consistently cooperative, generous, and under-standing, and I feel that I’ve been blessed. Not only have I enjoyed working for you; I have learned how a really good non-profit organization should be run. It’s really hard for me because of the people I have grown to feel as if we are a family. Also, receiving the positive words and dedication from all of you means the world to me. Now that you all know, let’s keep positive and have some fun, I love you all. Rachael Bowles Canteen Manager
