ROALD AMUNDSEN (1872-1928)

Many men have attempted these feats and failed. The reasons for Amundsen’s success were his thorough planning, his outstanding navigational skills, his urge to explore the unexplored, his accuracy, his unique leadership skills and above all his refusal to accept the status quo.

Jørgen Amundsen, founder of Amundsen Sports, is greatly inspired by his relative Roald Amundsen. Our premium quality garments for skiers, mountaineers and explorers are different, reflecting our unique approach inspired by this heritage.

On 14 December 1911, Roald Amundsen was the first man ever to set foot on the South Pole - a ground-breaking achievement of such magnitude, that it is hard to grasp a century later. Years of planning, training and research made it possible for Amundsen to venture with confidence into the unknown.

To conquer this last uncharted territory - a desert of ice, howling winds and temperatures down to minus 90 degrees Celsius - required massive cour-age as well as a mind so determined that it was only a question of when - rather than if - he would make it there.

Litt le did Amundsen know, that one of his relatives, Jørgen Amundsen, would return to Antarc-tica a century later.

The obvious choice might have been to retrace Amundsen’s footsteps to the South Pole. How-ever, i t was more of a chal lenge to venture on an

expedit ion in Amundsen’s spir it - and thus began a journey into untrodden terr itory.

The main goal of the expedition was to undertake a pioneer ascent of an unclimbed mountain, alongside testing Amundsen Sports’ unique clothing concept, the 3-Part Transformer System in its true elements.

INNOVATIONTHE 3-PART TRANSFORMER SYSTEM

Knee-length pants have many names; Breeches, Breeks, Plus Two’s, Plus Four’s, Knickers, Trews, Messenger Shorts etc. We call them Knickerbockers.

Knickerbockers were highly popular in sports, due to their versatility and comfort, typically worn by skiers, rock climbers and mountaineers. Why they faded out during the 20th century, is hard to explain.

After 10 seasons in Chamonix as a profes-sional freeskier, starring in numerous interna-tional ski films, and taking home the Freeride World Championship both in 2009 and 2010, Ane is without doubt the worlds best female freeskier.

Ane has now moved back to Norway to explore the northern playgrounds, and we are proud that she has chosen The Amundsen 3-part System as her preferred riding gear for her pioneering descents.

We met Jørgen for the first time during the 2011 ski season, and were impressed by both his skills on skis and as a designer. After one season in our knickerbockers and gaiters, Jørgen was convinced about this concept for freeriders.

The young artist went on to design his own freeride collection within our 3-part system, which we are proud to present for the upcoming winter season.

Jørgen has signed off his colleciton with a thick JPW/ART leather patch.

The Heroes Anorak is designed from the original anoraks worn by Amundsen and his men during the South Pole conquest in 1911.

The oversized unisex Anorak features no technical elements, yet protects you against the elements in the simplest way.

Carefully sewn in a tough cotton/linen blend coated with a natural wax. The wax will wear off over time,

reducing the waterproofness. The garment should therefore be rewaxed from time to time to get the desired balance between water resistance and breath-ability.

As hood trim Coyote fur is the natural choice to pro-tect your face from tough winter conditions. The fur that we use is acquired in Canada in the most humane ways from wild animals only, and follows the guide-lines of the Fur Council of Canada.
