Falls and Toronto on Canadian National.

NEW YORK is America’s most populous city. So amous are itsdistricts that Wall Street, Broadway and Madison Avenue areuniversally recognized shorthand or the industries located there. Itis a global city, with worldwide inluence over commerce, inance,

culture, entertainment and the arts. It is also an important center orinternational aairs, hosting the United Nations headquarters. Uniqueamong U.S. cities or its extensive use o mass transit, the densityand diversity o its population, its reputation as a city that neversleeps is due to its 24-hour subways and the constant bustling o traic and pedestrians. Birthplace o numerous cultural movements,its metropolitan population surpassed 10 million in the early 1930s,making it the irst “megacity” in human history.

Harlem River The Harlem lows eight miles between the East Riverand the Hudson River, separating the boroughs o Manhattan and theBronx. The Harlem has served as a traditional rowing course or NewYork, used by university crews rom Columbia, Fordham, New York andManhattan College. Columbia’s rowers have assisted New York PoliceDepartment investigations by sighting bodies in the water, as has beendepicted in the TV series Law & Order. We cross the river at a pointcalled Spuyten Duyvil -- Dutch or “spitting devil” -- that describes thetricky currents here where the Harlem River joins the Hudson River.

YONKERS is spread over hills rising rom near sea level on the easternbank o the Hudson River. Primarily a commuter city or workers intoManhattan, it is possessed o an excellent transportation inrastructure.Its attractions include Yonkers Raceway, the Philipse Manor Hall museumand archive, and many large shopping areas along Central Park Avenue.Its name derives rom the Dutch word or “young gentleman,” Jonker; this is how the recipient o the original land grant, Colen Donck, wasknown locally in 1645. In 1853, the Otis Elevator Company built the irstsuch actory here. Today, a Kawasaki railcar assembly plant occupiesits ormer acility, supplying several U.S. state and municipal systemswith transit vehicles, including New York City. The irst U.S. gol coursewas ounded here in 1888. Steven Tyler o the rock band Aerosmith is anotable resident.

Hastings-on-Hudson was once a center o stone quarrying. Hugequantities o dolomite marble were used to produce the paving blocksused extensively in New York City’s Central Park and in other cities. Thetown is now an upscale community, the current and ormer home o numerous high achievers in diverse ields o endeavor.

Irvington takes is name rom the author Washington Irving, creatoro Rip Van Winkle, Ichabod Crane and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.Nearby “Sunnyside” was his home and can be seen rom the train nearthe station. The town’s cool summer breezes and attractive setting

along the riverbank have attracted wealthy residents o New York Citysince the 1850s. It is today a community o the well-heeled whichincludes Today Show co-host Meredith Vieira, actress Debra Winger,and Reverend Sun Myung Moon, head o the Uniication Church. Its

controversial mayoral election o 2005 resulted in the declaration o awinner by drawing lots ater a tie vote could not be broken.

CROTON-HARMON, or Croton-on-Hudson, is the northern limit o theHudson line railroad’s electriication and a transer point between localand express service. Historically, it thrived as a maintenance point orthe ormer New York Central Railroad and its labor-intensive operationsTrains continuing north or west, including the lagship 20 th  Century Limited, exchanged their electric locomotives here or a steam or diesellocomotive to continue their journeys. Nearby is General Electric’s JohnF. Welch Leadership Center, which trains GE executives. Today, there isan ongoing eort to develop the riverront area or recreational use.Many Croton residents commute into New York City’s Grand CentralTerminal some 33 miles south via Metro-North Railroad.

Peekskill was an early American industrial center and the irstheadquarters o the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In1992, the town was the site o a meteorite landing, recorded on ilmby 16 witnesses, which punched through the trunk o a 1980 ChevroletMalibu. That car was later displayed on a world tour. The 1980sictional TV sitcom The Facts of Life was set in Peekskill.

West Point Academy, marked by stone battlements on the western(opposite) shore o the river, is a U.S. Army post and service academy.Its irst commander, Benedict Arnold, amously committed treason whenhe attempted to sell the ort to the British. West Point trains more Armyoicers than any other single institution. Occupying over 16,000 acres,it is one o the largest school campuses in the world. In addition to thetypical academic buildings and sports acilities, it includes a ski slope

and artillery range among its acilities. First occupied in 1778, it is theoldest continuously manned military post in the U.S. Bobby Knight, thewinningest men’s basketball coach in NCAA history, began his headcoaching career at Army in the 1960s. Notable alumni include PresidentsGrant and Eisenhower, Conederate President Jeerson Davis, andGenerals Robert E. Lee, John J. Pershing, Omar Bradley and DouglasMcArthur.

Pollepel Island is the site o Bannerman’s Castle, an abandoned militarysupply warehouse. Francis Bannerman purchased the island in 1900to use as a storage site or his growing business. Construction o thecastle began in 1901, with most o the building devoted to stores o army surplus. Today, the castle is property o the New York State Oice

o Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The island itsel, mostlyrock, contains 6.5 acres; its name is derived rom the Dutch word or“wooden spoon.”

Beacon received its name rom the signal ires that were set atop

nearby Beacon Mountain to warn o approaching British troops duringthe Revolutionary War. During the 1800s, the town was known as the“Hat Making Capital o the U.S.” with some 50 actories devoted to hatmanuacture. Its artistic and commercial rebirth came with the openingo one o the world’s largest contemporary art museums, a waterronthotel and conerence center. Across the river is its larger sister city,Newburgh.

POUGHKEEPSIE was home to the Smith Brothers’ amous coughdrops until 1972. The area’s natural beauty and proximity to New YorkCity prompted wealthy amilies like the Astors and Vanderbilts to buildpalatial weekend homes nearby. The city was an early center or whalerendering, and industry lourished through shipping, hatteries andbreweries – some owned by Matthew Vassar, ounder o Vassar College

here. Samuel Morse, inventor o the telegraph and Morse code, madethis his home or 25 years.

RHINECLIFF-KINGSTON The hamlet o Rhinecli in the town o Rhinebeck encompasses the largest district o National HistoricLandmark designation in the country. Kingston’s downtown area,known as “the Rondout,” is considered one o the nation’s best placesor artists. It was also the irst capital o New York between 1777 and1797. Kingston once shaped and shipped most o the “bluestone” usedto build the sidewalks o New York City. The Amtrak station here wasbuilt by the ormer New York Central Railroad in the early 20th centuryand hosts several Amtrak trains serving nearby Poughkeepsie as wellas Montreal, Toronto, Niagara Falls and New York City. Kingston may beaccessed by taxicab rom the station.

Catskill across the Hudson River was once a stopover or vacationerson their way to the Catskill Mountain resorts. The area was purchasedrom natives in 1678 and the town was established in 1788. Theormer undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion “Iron” MikeTyson once trained at the Catskill gym owned by the legendary trainerCus D’Amato, who took the young ighter out o reorm school andwelcomed him into his amily. Across the river on the right is theSaugerties Lighthouse, decommissioned in 1954 as automation madelight keepers obsolete. It is today a unique bed and breakast.

HUDSON is named or the adjacent river and its discoverer andexplorer, Henry Hudson. Its 7,000 residents include some 500 inmatesat the Hudson Correctional Facility. Famous natives o Hudson include

General William Jenkins Worth, whose leading role in the U.S. victoryover Mexico in the Mexican-American War made permanent theliberation o Texas. The city o Ft. Worth is named or him. Today,Hudson’s main thoroughare, Warren Street, hosts a lively antiques

market o almost seventy shops. Several television shows have beenilmed here, including The Wonder Years.

Castleton-on-Hudson is a largely residential suburb o Hudson. It namewas derived rom Henry Hudson’s experience during exploration o hisnamesake river, whereupon he encountered a Native American oodstorehouse so large it was considered a castle.

ALBANY-RENSSELAER Albany is the capital o the State o NewYork. Its capitol building is one o only ten state capitol buildings inthe U.S. without a dome. The English acquired the original site romthe Dutch in 1664 and named it in honor o James II, Duke o Albany.It is the ourth oldest city and the second oldest state capital in theU.S. In 1754, Benjamin Franklin presented his “Albany Plan o Union”to the Albany Congress, the irst ormal proposal to unite the colonies.

Although never adopted, it proved to be an important precursor to theU.S. Constitution.

In the midtown section, the Empire State Plaza contains the tallestbuilding in the state outside o New York City, the Erastus Corning TowerThe Plaza is based on the National Congress complex in Brazil’s capitalcity, Brasilia. The local economy revolves around state governmentand nanotechnology. Unlike most o the nation, Albany’s “last call oralcohol” in the bars is 4:00 a.m. Albany public schools spend $9,227per student, well above the U.S. average o $6,068. Famous natives o Albany include Andy Rooney, the humorist and commentator amous orhis part on the CBS news program 60 Minutes.

The Amtrak station is located in Rensselaer, 1.5 miles rom Albany acrossthe Hudson River. The structure dates rom 2002, eaturing a coeeshop, newsstand and post oice. One o the busiest stations in theAmtrak system, it serves northeastern routes outside o the NortheastCorridor “spine.” They include this train, the Adirondack, servingMontreal and New York City; Empire Service between either Albany-Rensselaer or Bualo and New York City; the Ethan Allen Express servingRutland Vermont and New York City; and the Maple Leaf serving Torontoand New York City. Here, also, the Boston and New York City branches othe Lake Shore Limited to and rom Chicago meet.

SCHENECTADY is the ninth largest city in New York State. It becamethe headquarters o the General Electric Company in 1892 ater ThomasEdison had moved his Edison Machine Works here. The companygenerated the irst television broadcasts in the U.S. in Schenectady

in 1928. Union College is the oldest planned campus in the country.Former President Jimmy Carter began graduate studies in nuclearphysics at Union College in 1953. Schenectady is the ormer home o the American Locomotive Company, ALCO, which once supplied manymajor U.S. railroads with motive power.

AMSTERDAM was settled in 1710 by the Dutch and named ater thecity in the Netherlands in 1803. A dam on the nearby Chuctenuda Riverled to manuacturing in the area, primarily carpets, textiles and pearlbuttons. The ormer National Guard Armory is now a bed and breakastlisted on the National Register o Historic Places and has appeared inseveral movie productions. Amsterdam is also home to the ProessionalWrestling Hall o Fame and Museum. Notable Amsterdamians includeIssur Danielovitch, born here in 1916, perhaps better known as actorKirk Douglas.

UTICA is situated in the Mohawk Valley and was named or theancient Carthaginian city in Tunisia. It boasts an extensive parksystem and is the ocus o regional economic revitalization eorts inthe area o arts and entertainment. It is also amous or its plethorao Italian-American restaurants, some o which are generations old.Dick Clark began his career in the mailroom o radio station WRUNin Utica. Notable Uticans include actress Annette Funicello, ormer“Mouseketeer” on the Mickey Mouse Club television show.

ROME is the home o one very notable resident: Francis Bellamy,author o the Pledge o Allegiance. Named ater the Eternal City in Italy,Rome is in the heart o the region made amous by James FenimoreCooper in a collection o novels called the Leatherstocking Tales . OnJuly 4, 1817, construction began on the Erie Canal here, eventually tolink the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. The oldest manuacturingcompany in the U.S., Revere Copper Products, Inc., was oundedhere, as was America’s irst cheese actory. Amtrak President JosephBoardman was raised on a dairy arm nearby.

SYRACUSE, named ater a city on the east coast o Sicily, is theeconomic and educational hub o Central New York. Home to theGreat New York State Fair and Syracuse University, the city boastsmore snowall than any other large U.S. city, with an annual average o 

115.6 in. Its top employers are in the education and service industries.Salt was discovered nearby in the 18 th century, giving rise to its earlynickname o “Salt City.” The Syracuse Post-Standard, its morning daily,calls itsel “America’s Most Colorul Newspaper” with good reason:almost every page contains color. Actors Richard Gere and Tom Cruisehail rom Syracuse – as did the late Rod Serling, creator o the popularand groundbreaking science iction television anthology Twilight Zone in 1959.

ROCHESTER is ranked as one o America’s top cities or quality o lie.By 1838, it was the largest lour-producing city in the U.S. and, havingdoubled its population in only ten years, it became America’s irst“boomtown.” It was also known or being a center o men’s ashionsand home to a large garment industry. It is now the site o a number

o Fortune 1000 companies, including Eastman Kodak and the XeroxCorporation, the latter ounded here in 1906. National rozen oodprocessor Birds Eye is headquartered in suburban Rochester, and thecity is the birthplace o the Wegmans Grocery store chain. It hosts anumber o estivals rom early spring throughout the summer. Between1927 and 1957, Rochester had a light rail underground transit system,the smallest city in the world to have such. Public debate is underwayconcerning the costs o restoring the light rail system versus illing orotherwise utilizing the underground tunnels it ormerly occupied.

BUFFALO occupies the eastern shore o Lake Erie at the head o theNiagara River. The name is thought to be derived rom the Frenchphrase beau flueve, or beautiul river. Its radial street and grid systemis one o only three such plans in the U.S. Once home to the largest

steel-making producer in the world, it is today experiencing newdevelopment and renovations downtown. Ater a collision betweena bicyclist and a car on a rainy night in 1917, the car’s driver, aBualo theatre owner, ormed the Tri-Continental Corporation. It soonintroduced the irst windshield wiper, and now trades as Trico Products.And the popular dish known currently as Bualo Wings was, accordingto legend, irst prepared in the Anchor Bar on Main St. downtown in1964 by its owner as a snack or her college-aged son and his riendswho had arrived one evening hungry, late and unannounced. FamousBualonians include CNN journalist Wol Blitzer, the pop band Goo Goo

Dolls, and the late Amanda Blake – better known as “Miss Kitty” atthe Long Branch Saloon or 19 years on the longest-running televisionseries drama in history, CBS’ Gunsmoke.

BUFFALO EXCHANGE ST. STATION was opened in 1952 to servesome 21 ormer New York Central and Toronto, Hamilton and BualoRailway trains daily. Within ten years, New York Central ceasedpassenger service and the station was closed. Amtrak reinstated servicehere in 1977.

NIAGARA FALLS (New York) was incorporated in 1892 and builtaround actories that utilized alling water or energy. The downtownarea borders a park that overlooks American, Horseshoe and Bridal VeiFalls. The city is visited by almost ten million people annually and isone o the top ten tourist destinations in the U.S. In 2004, the SenecaNation o Indians opened the Seneca Niagara Casino in the ormerNiagara Falls Conventional and Civic Center. Notable natives includesinger April Stevens who, along with her brother Nino Tempo, recordedthe No. 1 Billboard Hit Deep Purple in 1963 and won the GrammyAward or best rock and roll recording in 1964.

United States/Canadian Border

NIAGARA FALLS (Ontario) is known as the sel-proclaimedHoneymoon Capital o the World. It beneits rom the superior viewo American and Horseshoe Falls that it can oer tourists rom theCanadian side o the Niagara River. The city has also developednumerous tourist attractions that attract millions annually. The late1990s witnessed an economic boom as legal wagering was introduced

into the local economy with the opening o Casino Niagara and, later,the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. Its Historic Niagara section broughtart galleries, boutiques and bistros. Niagara’s Fury is a representationo how the Falls were created, simulating an ice age environment. Onewell-known attraction is the Maid o the Mist boat ride.
