AMSTERDAM OLD TOWN - CHINATOWN AMSTERDAMINFORMATIONSERVICE
©T + 31 (0)20-6207186 E [email protected]
CHINATOWN AMSTERDAMThe Nieuwmarkt and a large part of the Zeedijk form the heart of Chinatown. The first Chinese in Amsterdam worked as coke stokers, fuelling the large passenger ships. With the decline of sailing, many Chinese became unem-ployed and started restaurants and Chinese shops. The Chinese community is very close, takes care of each other and remains loyal to their traditions and customs.
BUDDHIST TEMPLEThe Buddhist Temple ‘Fo Guang Shan He Hwa’ (Buddha Light Mountain) was built in 2000. An abbot and four nuns live here and manage this beautiful building. The women have dedicated themselves to Fo Guang Shan, a new branch of Zen Buddhism. The temple is devoted to Guan Yin, a female Buddha. Her name means: ‘the wise one full of
mercy’. Her statue can be admired in the public area of the temple. Feel free to take a look but please remain silent.Guided tours for individuals or small groups are given on Saturdays at 2.00, 3.00 and 4 pm and last about 30 minutes. An appointment is not necessary.
