Secretary Salazar Marks Establishment of Flint Hills Legacy
Conservation Area
First New Refuge Unit Created Under Obama Administration.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
WICHITA, KS --(Ammoland.com)- Today, Secretary of the Interior
Ken Salazar joined conservation leadership, elected officials and other
partners to announce the creation of the more than 1 million-acre Flint
Hills Legacy Conservation Area (FHLCA), a new unit of the National
Wildlife Refuge System.
The Flint Hills Legacy Conservation Area is the product of efforts by the
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and
Parks, private landowners, and other agencies and partners to protect a
unique and highly diverse area in eastern Kansas known as the Flint
Hills Tallgrass Region.
“Thanks to the tireless efforts of private landowners,
stakeholders, state agencies, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, the tallgrass prairies of the Flint Hills will forever be
protected as a crown jewel of America’s Great Outdoors,” said
Secretary Salazar.
“I am especially proud that the first new unit created under
this Administration conserves working lands and recognizes
the vital role farmers and ranchers play as stewards of our
nation’s fish and wildlife resources. The Flint Hills Legacy
Conservation Area will protect land, water, and wildlife while
creating new opportunities for economic prosperity in the
region.”
Today, less than 4 percent of the once-vast tallgrass prairie remains, of
which nearly 80 percent lies within the Flint Hills of eastern Kansas and
northeastern Oklahoma. The purpose of the Flint Hills Legacy
Conservation Area is to help maintain the integrity of tallgrass prairie
wildlife habitat, stream water quality, and the rich agricultural heritage
of the Flint Hills by acquiring and protecting up to 1.1 million acres of
habitat through voluntary, perpetual conservation easements. These
conservation easements will protect habitat for more than 100 species of
grassland birds and 500 plant species, and ensure the region’s
sustainable ranching culture – which directly supports conservation of
the tallgrass prairie – will continue.
Service conservation easements are binding legal agreements that
typically prohibit subdivision and commercial development activities,
but allow for continued agricultural uses such as livestock grazing and
haying. Under conservation easements, land ownership and property
rights, including control of public access, remain with participating
landowners. In addition, participating properties would remain on local
tax rolls.
“The Flint Hills has a strong and rich history of preserving
the ranching heritage and the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s conservation easement
program would provide a voluntary opportunity to preserve
this heritage for future generations,” said Mike Collinge, a
Flint Hills Rancher.
The project boundary includes almost 45,000 acres of existing
conservation areas managed by The Nature Conservancy, U.S.
Department of Agriculture, Ranchland Trust of Kansas, (an affiliate of
the Kansas Livestock Association), and Kansas Land Trust.

Wisconsin Gun Rights PoliticalNewsNOV 15, 2010 04:23P.M.
Wisconsin Gun Rights Political News
The elections are over, now what?
by Jeff Nass
Wisconsin Firearm Owners, Ranges, Clubs & Educators
Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- 2010 could have been a bad year in
Madison for the Second Amendment.
WI-FORCE and our lobbyist, Bob Welch of the Welch Group, monitored
over 100 bills and potential bills in Madison pertaining to firearms and
hunting.
Yes, I said over 100. When you needed a voice, WI-FORCE was there. We
were able to get a few good bills passed and, more importantly, we
stopped all of the very bad bills. WI-FORCE was your voice.
Although a Personal Protection bill (including concealed carry of
firearms) is first on our agenda, our legislators may also have some other
minor things to deal with like jobs and the economy. WI-FORCE is
committed to getting the best bill possible to allow the citizens of
Wisconsin to exercise their Constitutional Rights.
What you should know about personal protection / concealed carry: No
one has a bill, no one runs an approved or certified course for Wisconsin.
WI-FORCE and NRA- ILA will be working with legislators to get the best
bill that is possible passed. Our current legislators knew last January that
Wisconsin would have a Personal Protection bill. There were some talks
with the Majority party about passing a bill last summer before the
election, but we could not get a reasonable bill. With the change, things
are much friendlier, but there is still a lot of work to do.
Why is WI-FORCE the one to lead on this issue? First and foremost our
motive is the Constitutional rights of the citizens of Wisconsin. We have
been your voice, protecting the Second Amendment in Madison.
Secondly, we have the resources in self-defense instruction that have
taught classes for out of state carry permits for over 15 years. WI-
FORCE’s resources have extensive training in firearms and the judicious
use of lethal force. They include Nationally Certified Counselors (they
certify other instructors) for personal protection both inside and outside
of the home, and instructors certified by the Massad Ayoob Group. These
resources will help us advise the legislators to produce the best bill
possible.
WI-FORCE is a strong advocate of training but that training will need to
fit the needs of the permit holder, not how much money can be made by
instructors and their organizations. The last 10 years we have seen, and
will see, more so called experts pop up. The first couple of years after a
state passes a personal protection bill, there are a large group of people
in need of classes. Experts pop up out of nowhere. Once their state’s pool
is reduced, many that were making a living instructing, run out of
customers. They then expand their potential customers by expanding to
other states. I strongly suggest you choose carefully, both choosing a
class and the knowledge that you take from that class. Massad Ayoob,
Thunder Ranch, and Gunsite training facility have great reputations and
understand that good teachers know their material and are able to teach
it to others. Many that think they can teach, believe so because they have
been trained well, but they do not have the skills to teach their
knowledge, while others teach well, but their knowledge is limited.
Always check the background of the instructor or organization you are
looking to train with. Make sure that the instruction you get matches
your needs.
WI-FORCE’s first job is to protect and help ensure the Second
Amendment rights of all citizens of the Wisconsin. We will protect not
just the rich, the young or healthy citizens, but also (and maybe more
importantly) the poor and disabled.
What can you do to help? Stay in contact with the Trigger ( get your
buddies to sign up for the Trigger too! ) and check the website regularly
at www.wi-force.org . When the time is right and, if it is needed, we will
tell you to call or show up in Madison. Remember, when things were bad
we were there. Now that things have changed, please support us.
About:
Wi-FORCE promotes and protects the shooting sports, hunting, and the
lawful ownership and use of firearms in Wisconsin. We coordinate match
schedules of member clubs, sanction the state championship matches,
monitor and recommend legislation, and provide training and
educational programs for our members, competitors and Wisconsin
shooters. Wi-FORCE supports the interaction and education of all
individuals and groups interested in the shooting sports and the natural
right of citizens to own arms. Visit: www.wi-force.org

First on the List for FreedomNOV 15, 2010 04:00P.M.
First on the List for Freedom
“Hi! My name is Dave, and I’m a profreedom activist.”
John Hancock’s signature
Arizona Citizens Defense League
Catalina, AZ --(Ammoland.com)- Sound familiar? It should. You’ve
probably said something like that many times.
Why? If you’re reading this, chances are you belong to that select group
of people who understand something that very few folks do these days.
And that is, quite simply, that our freedom is under attack. Serious
attack, from a whole host of enemies.
So we, all of us, have become activists in the fight for
freedom.
But what makes someone an activist?
I’m not talking about how Mr. Webster sees it. I mean how we see it,
deep down in our bones. What is that quality that really makes someone
an activist? I write letters, make phone calls, and send emails and lobby
my legislators.
Lots of them. All the time. By now I’d bet most of them have a separate
correspondence file all for me. I’d lay dollars to doughnuts that most of
them are sick of hearing my name. But does that make me an activist?
Nope.
I get involved. Really involved. I devote lots of time to various pro-
freedom causes. In my case, it mostly goes to the Arizona Citizens
Defense League as it’s President and primary lobbyist. I attend rallies. I
march in protest. I sign petitions. I volunteer to help. I go to meetings. So
does that make me an activist? Nope.
Let me step aside for a moment and ask a question. How many of you
folks who are out there reading this have ever had the following happen
to you?
You’re involved, you’re volunteering, and you’re out there on the front
lines for the cause. You’re trying your hardest to convince someone else
to join AzCDL, sign that petition, attend that meeting, or march in that
protest. And they say,
“I’d love to, really, but I don’t want my name on a list.”
So you say, “Ah. You don’t want your name on a list. I see.” And you
smile, and move on to the next person. But do you really see? I mean
really, they don’t want their name on a list? And just what planet have
these people been living on, if their names aren’t on any list yet?
Were you born in a hospital? Guess what? Your name is on a list. Do you
have a Social Security number? It’s on another list. How about a Driver’s
License? Yep, you guessed it, another list. Do you vote? Another list. Got
a telephone? Another list. Checking account? Another list. Credit cards?
Another list.
And the list of lists you’re already on gets bigger and bigger every day.
And that brings me back to my original point. What makes someone an

activist? For me, it’s one simple thing.
I want to be on the list!
Yep, you heard me right. I want to be on the list! Right at the top. In big,
bold, 40 point type. So that whatever freedom stealing, control freak is
monitoring the list can see my name without having to put on his reading
glasses. Just like John Hancock’s signature on the Declaration of
Independence.
Do you think when old Johnny did that, that he didn’t know what it
meant? Do you think for one second that he never realized it would put
him square in the sights of the most powerful ruler in the world? And did
he hesitate for even one second? Nope. Why? Because old Johnny was an
activist.
I want them to know my name. I want them to know where I live, what I
do, who I associate with, and why.
I want them to know that this particular pain in the butt will never stop
being one. I want them to know that I’m out there, watching, whenever
one of their minions is getting ready to introduce some new rule or
regulation that will tear another hole in the Bill of Rights. I want them to
know that I’m going to be the first in line to expose their little schemes.
And maybe most of all, I want them to know, deep down in their bones,
that they can only push so far b e f o r e I p u s h b a c k !
I don’t want them to ever forget who I am, what I stand for, and the
lengths that I will go to in order to preserve the freedoms that we were
born with, and possess merely because we’re human beings.
So what makes me an activist? Simple. The desire to stay in sights of the
powerful, so that those who won’t do so can sleep well at night, knowing
that the knock on the door won’t come.
“Hi! My name is Dave, and I’m a profreedom activist. Make
sure you put that down right at the top of your list!”

Caleb Giddings made a name for himself with his performances shooting
Enhanced Service Revolver in IDPA competition as well as his 2010
appearance as a contestant on the History Channel’s reality TV show
“Top Shot”.
Caleb comes to Cheaper Than Dirt! from the National Rifle
Association where he worked as an election coordinator. Caleb has been
shooting since he was 8 years old. It was in the US Coast Guard Academy
on the collegiate pistol team where he first found that he had more than
just a knack for shooting. As a bull’s-eye pistol shooter Caleb laid the
foundation for his move into action pistol shooting. His performances at
area and national matches regularly place him with some of the best
shooters in the nation.
Among his peers Caleb is considered to be a major up-and-coming
competitor. He was the 2009 IDPA Indiana State Champion and has the
potential to make a serious showing at the 2011 IDPA Nationals.
When asked about the partnership Caleb had this to say: “I’m
proud to be sponsored by Cheaper than Dirt! Their
commitment to supporting the shooting sports at both the
local and the national level is fantastic. I’m looking forward to
the opportunity to spread that support to both new and
experienced shooters!”
Giddings will be doing more than just letting his shooting performance
do the talking. In addition to being a talented shooter he is also a
published writer for Shooting Illustrated and other major publications.
Readers of Cheaper Than Dirt’s blog “The Shooter’s Log” can look
forward to feature articles from Caleb with shooting tips, firearm
reviews, as well as ammunition testing and evaluation.
Caleb went on to discuss upcoming ammunition reviews:
“Testing ammo is an opportunity that has me fired up. For
competitive shooters, hunters, and concealed carry permit
holders it’s extremely important that the ammunition you
choose for the job be able to deliver the right performance.
Whether it’s making a clean kill on a game animal, making
the perfect hit on the x-ring, or protecting your family, I’m
thrilled to be testing ammunition from Cheaper Than Dirt
and helping the shooting community to make informed
decisions about their ammo.”
Cheaper Than Dirt! prides itself on being America’s Ultimate

Sinclair Flash Hole Tool Makes Ammunition Reloading Case
Prep Easy
Sinclair Flash Hole Tool
Midway USA
Columbia, MO --(Ammoland.com)- With one easy step, you can go a
long way to obtaining the greatest potential accuracy from your
ammunition handloads by using Sinclair’s new Piloted Flash Hole
Deburring Tool.
High-volume cartridge case manufacturing can leave a burr on the flash
hole, which can deflect and distort the primer flame, leading to erratic
powder ignition and significant velocity variation. The Piloted Flash Hole
Deburring Tool solves the problem.
The Sinclair tool’s adjustable stainless steel pilot fits precisely into the
cartridge case mouth to guide the tool shaft and control depth of cut. The
tool steel cutter removes the burr on the flash hole’s mouth, and leaves a
lightly chamfered edge. This ensures the primer flame is directed to the
center of the powder column for uniform ignition.

Cedar Creek Camo
BASTROP, Texas --(Ammoland.com)- Makers of the original cedar
camouflage, Cedar Creek Camo announces it has selected Meng &
Associates Inc. of Austin, Texas, for public relations and marketing
support in promoting its one-of-a-kind camouflage apparel and
products.
“Maximizing your concealment is the absolute key to an
enjoyable and successful hunt, and we’ve developed a
camouflage pattern and a high-quality apparel line that is

game’ to a new level,” says Kris Rodgers, co-owner of Cedar
Creek Camo and a life-long hunter.
“Meng & Associates has a strong track record in the outdoor

In development for more than three years and created by seasoned
hunters, the all-new Cedar Creek Camo pattern was carefully designed to

tone, year-round color palette creates a realistic 3-D effect which
maximizes concealment in a wide variety of hunting environments.
“I’m very excited about our relationship with Cedar Creek
Camo,” said John Meng, president of Meng & Associates.
“Cedar Creek Camo is the newest, most practical camo I’ve
seen and I think it outperforms many of the well-known
competitors, especially when hunting from thick cedar breaks
as well as pine.”

a full-service marketing firm that has built strong relationships in the
outdoors industry. As a part of that service, Meng & Associates founded
the Hunting Wire (www.HuntingWire.com), the industry’s only on-line

GORE OptiFade Camo & theScience of NothingNOV 15, 2010 10:30A.M.
GORE OptiFade Camo & the Science of Nothing
W.L. Gore & Associates
Newark, DE --(Ammoland.com)- You wouldn’t head for the jungle with
gear designed for Arctic terrain. By the same logic, as backcountry or tree
stand hunters you require concealment patterns developed for specific
natural environments and for the different types of prey you pursue.
In 2009 WL Gore introduced GORE® OPTIFADE® Concealment’s
Open Country pattern, optimized for backcountry hunters of elk, mule
deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and other ungulates.
Now Gore scientists have developed GORE® OPTIFADE®
Concealment’s Forest pattern, which is configured for tree stand hunters
who operate in wooded environments, pursuing big game from elevated
angles at close engagement ranges.
The world of the tree stand hunter is defined by stark contrasts—bright
sky, dark leaves and branches—and by the vertical lines of trees. These
lines make it easier for whitetail deer and other ungulate prey to detect
the hunter’s presence: even if he is wearing mimicry camo, he “blobs out”
with every movement. In collaboration with the experts in concealment
and animal vision who helped develop OPTIFADE® technology, Gore
manipulated the macro and micro patterns to meet the specific
requirements of wooded environments.
The results is the new OPTIFADE® Forest pattern that makes tree stand
hunters NOTHING in the eyes of ungulate prey.
To see the difference, let’s compare the OPTIFADE® Open
Country pattern with new Forest pattern:
• The Open Country pattern is scientifically designed for engagement
ranges of 35 yards and beyond at ground level. The larger neutral
areas of the pattern—the macro-pattern—are more critical to
concealment at these engagement ranges, in a landscape of rocks,
brush and scattered trees.
• The Forest pattern is scientifically designed for close engagement
ranges of under 20 yards and for elevated angles of
attack—typically 15 feet up in a tree stand. At that proximity, the
micro-pattern used in GORE® OPTIFADE® Concealment
becomes more critical: it compensates for the contrasted, highly
detailed background perceived by the prey.
About W.L. Gore & Associates (www.gore-tex.com)

products for the electronics, fabrics, industrial and medical markets.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The Natural Resources Commission
approved a couple of changes to spring turkey regulations designed to
offer more opportunity to more hunters while still providing a high-
quality hunting experience.
A total of 114,290 licenses (49,290 general licenses and 65,000 private-
land-only licenses) will be available. Approximately 56,433 square miles
of Michigan will be open to turkey hunters in the 2011 spring season.
In the Upper Peninsula, Hunt Unit M now incorporates the entire U.P.,
including Bois Blanc Island, which was previously in Hunt Unit J.
“This change has strong public support and will provide
increased flexibility for Upper Peninsula hunters,” said
DNRE wild turkey program leader Al Stewart.
In addition, hunters who opt for the guaranteed hunt (Hunt 234) –
which allows turkey hunting everywhere in the state except the public
lands of southern Michigan – will be able to purchase that license until
May 1, the day before the hunt period begins. Previously, hunters who
wanted the guaranteed hunt had to purchase their licenses during the
application period, Jan. 1-Feb. 1.
“We believe this change will allow folks who let the deadline
slip their minds during the application period the
opportunity to take advantage of the late hunt,” Stewart said.
For more information on spring turkey hunting, visit the DNRE website
at www.michigan.gov/hunting.
The DNRE is committed to the conservation, protection, management
and accessible use of the state’s environment, natural resources and
related economic interests for current and future generations.

state has a bear population problem—according to the latest Fairleigh
Dickinson University PublicMind poll.
The poll asked voters if they’d approve of the bear hunt “if wildlife
scientists conclude that bears are exceeding their recommended habitat
limits and are destroying private property.” It found 53 percent of
those agreed, 36 percent disagreed, and 11 percent were unsure.
In the Passaic and Bergen counties, citizens expressed support for the
hunt under that condition, with 44 percent affirming and 37 percent in
disagreement; eighteen percent were unsure.
A second version of the question—simply asking voters whether they
approve or disapprove of a bear-hunting season, but without mentioning
the opinion of wildlife experts—showed slightly less support for the hunt,
but more approved than disapproved. FDU reports 49 percent approved,
and 33 percent disapproved. And far more people, 18 percent, were
unsure whether they’d approve.
Bergen and Passaic residents supported it by a small margin under that
scenario — 43 percent approving of the bear hunt and 41 percent
disapproving; eleven percent of voters were unsure of their positions.
“Bear hunting is just not something people think about every
day in the most densely populated state in the country,” said
Peter Woolley, a political scientist and director of the poll.
“Many people will decide their views based on whether they
think it is a necessity rather than recreation.”
The 2010 black bear hunting season is Dec. 6 to 11. Any participant must
complete a bear training seminar and possess a permit for one of the
state’s four bear hunting zones, all north of Route 78 and west of Route
287; no hunter can receive a permit for more than one zone. Each hunter
has a bag limit of one black bear. More information is available from the
state Department of Environmental Protection.
In the FDU poll, men were found to be twice as likely as women to
approve of bear hunting. Men approved by a wide margin either way the
question was asked (64-28 and 61-24), while women split on the
questions either way they were asked (44-43 and 38-41).
Voters under 30 disapproved by a margin of 2-1, but voters older than 60
approved by a margin of 2-1.
Voters in the most rural parts of the Garden State were more likely to
approve of a bear hunt than people in more developed parts of the state.
In the northwest (Sussex, Hunterdon, Warren, Morris and Somerset
counties) and south (Cape May, Atlantic, Cumberland, Gloucester,
Camden and Salem counties), voters approved by margins of 2-1.
The Teaneck-area has not been immune from reports of bears. In
August, a black bear was spotted around the Knickerbocker Country
Club, near the Bergenfield border, reports said.
The Fairleigh Dickinson University poll of 831 registered voters
statewide was conducted by telephone, including both landlines and cell
phones, from Oct. 4 through Oct. 10, 2010. At random, half of
respondents (423) were asked one version of the question about
approving or disapproving of bear hunting and half (408) were asked
another version. The margin of error for each group is plus or minus five
percentage points.
What do you think about the bear hunt? Tell us in the comments.
