A RUNNER.A HURDLE.

AN UNEXPECTED COACH.

HIS IS HOW my doctor became my coach. This is not your typical “I got hurt and my doctor made me better” story. Although I did, and he did.

Being new to distance running, there were a lot of things I simply didn’t know, like when my shoes were too old, what pain was bad pain, what diet is optimal for a runner. As a result, I ran in shoes that I shouldn’t have, pushed through pain when I should have stopped, and didn’t fuel my body the way I should.

Dr. Harrast (UW Physician, Harborview Medical Center) is my doctor and a competitive triathlete. He knows runners. It was his expertise that got me through shin splints, a turned ankle and a tendon injury. His mentoring guided a smarter training schedule that helped me complete my first marathon. And his support helped give me the confidence to do something else in that first marathon:

I qualified for Boston.

LOST AND FOUND

Page 12: Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon Event Guide 2014

6

Gatorade Endurance Formula: As part of a five-electrolyte blend of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride, Gatorade Endurance Formula is a specialized sports drink designed to help sustain hydration during prolonged training and racing when fluid and electrolyte losses can be significant. It contains nearly twice the sodium (200mg) and more than three times the potassium (90mg) of Gatorade Thirst Quencher to help sustain hydration, maintain proper fluid balance and replace the critical electrolytes lost in sweat during these occasions. Gatorade Endurance Formula (Lemon-Lime) is the official on-course sports drink of the Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon and will be available approximately every 2 miles beginning at mile 2.

Race Time Limit: All event routes will be opened to regular vehicular traffic at 2:15pm. This allows for a seven-hour Marathon Walk finish and a six-hour Marathon Run finish. There will be limited on-course aid stations, Course Marshals and police support after the course closes. Participants may continue along the course after the official closure by obeying all standard traffic control devices. Finish Line staff and essential services will remain until every athlete has completed the event. Additionally, all marathon participants still on the I-90 floating bridge after 10:30am will be bussed to the end of the bridge and allowed to finish the marathon. (This allows for a 25 min/mile pace for walkers and an 18 min/mile pace for runners.)

Wheelchair Competition: Wheelchair athletes are welcome to compete in the Marathon and Half Marathon races. Both courses are fully paved and provide wheelchair athletes the opportunity for unbridled competition. The lead wheelchairs will have an escort throughout the race. Competitors must wear hard shell helmets and wheelchairs must be adequately equipped for safety. Wheelchair competitors should especially note the risks regarding the nature of the course such as bollards and the possibility of other traffic on the course.

Medical Assistance: Provided by our Official Medical Coverage Sponsor, UW Medicine. If medical assistance is required on the race course, contact one of the orange-capped radio operators, who can call for emergency assistance or van transportation if required. If you drop out, please notify an aid station attendant, radio operator or anyone inside the information booth in the Victory Recovery Area so the information can be relayed to the event support staff.

Risks: As with most sports, participating in a marathon or half marathon involves a number of inherent risks, including but not limited to tripping and falling, contact with other participants or spectators and the effects of weather, traffic and road conditions. Because the courses are run on roads, streets and trails, there are posts and possible potholes. Additionally, there may be other foot and bicycle traffic on the course. All participants need to be prepared to avoid obstacles and traffic. In submitting your entry, you are acknowledging your awareness and assumption of all risks associated with your participation. You are certifying that you are medically and physically fit to safely compete in this event.

Safety Rules: The Seattle Marathon Association is a member of the Road Runners Club of America and as such is required through its membership insurance to exclude entrants with bicycles, skateboards, baby joggers or strollers, roller skates, roller blades or animals. iPods may be used, but are not encouraged by RRCA or the Seattle Marathon Association. For safety reasons, if a course official asks you to remove your listening device, please do so. Entrants choosing to violate these safety conditions pose a danger to all participants. Persons found in violation of these safety rules will be disqualified and removed from the course.

THE FINISH LINE

Victory Recovery Area: Medical attention, hot soup and other refreshments will be available in the Victory Recovery Area, located in the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. 5K RACE INFORMATION START TIME - 8:30amDowntown Seattle$40 through November 29th, $45 on Race Day

If you’ve never been involved with the Seattle Marathon Family of Events, the 5K Run/Walk is a great introduction! This 3.1 mile race is perfect for both runners and walkers. Use it as a warm-up for the Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon or as a fun, family outing to burn off some of those Thanksgiving Day calories. Treat your out-of-town guests to stunning views of Seattle while doing something healthy for the entire family.

THE COURSEThe USATF-certified course takes you through the streets of Down-town Seattle. The course is out-and-back, beginning at 5th & Harri-son, next to the EMP, heads south into downtown on 2nd Ave, loops around at Spring Street, and ends inside Memorial Stadium.

Strollers welcomeThe ADA-compliant course is wheelchair and stroller-friendly. We ask that walkers and parties with strollers start toward the end of the line to reduce crowding and allow runners to achieve their best time.

ResultsUnofficial results will be posted near the finish line as soon as they are available. A complete listing of official results will be posted at www.seattlemarathon.org shortly after the race.

TimingThe race is timed by Accustat Sports Timing on a USATF-certified course using ChronoTrack tag technology. All 5K Race participants must wear a chip as instructed in order to appear in the results.

AwardsAwards are presented 6 deep in 5-year incremental age divisions for the 5K race. First, second and third place men's and women's finishers for active military personnel will also receive awards. Masters division competitors are defined as 40 years old and older. Masters division runners are eligable for both overall awards and masters division awards. Overall Wheelchair Division awards will be presented to the fastest male and female wheelchair finishers. All finishers receive a complimentary short-sleeved Technical Fabric shirt and Goody Bag at the finish of the race.

RisksAs with most sports, running a road race involves a number of inherent risks, including but not limited to tripping and falling, contact with other participants or spectators, the effects of weather, traffic and road conditions. Because the race is run on roads, streets and trails, there are posts and possible potholes along the course. Additionally, there may be other foot and bicycle traffic on the course. All participants need to be prepared to avoid obstacles and traffic. In submitting your entry, you are acknowledging your awareness and assumption of all risks associated with your participation. You are certifying that you are medically and physically fit to compete in this event safely.

KIDS MARATHON INFORMATIONSaturday, November 29, 2014 at 10amSeattle Center Memorial Stadium / $20

The Seattle Children's Kids Marathon promotes fitness, reading and good deeds for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. Kids complete a full 26.2 mile marathon at a rate that is fun and safe for their growing bodies — one mile at a time. Kids are also encouraged to read 13 books and perform 13 “Do Rights.” On Race Day, the kids gather at Seattle Center to complete the final 1.2 miles together in a celebratory event that includes kids-style medals, finisher certificates, space blankets, t-shirts, goody bags, food and lots of fun!

THE COURSEOn Race Day: Kids run the last 1.2 miles of their “marathon” together starting at 5th and Harrison, next to the Experience Music Project. They run around the Seattle Center, past the Space Needle and down Mercer Street, finishing their marathon in Memorial Stadium. See the course map at www.seattlemarathon.org for details.

Leading up to Race Day: Kids run or walk the first 25 miles of their “marathon” one mile (or ½ mile) at a time on a safe, secure route designated by parents, coaches or teachers. The program should take 6-8 weeks to complete depending on the fitness level of your child. A less active child may need to start earlier to complete the program. As they are completing their miles, kids also complete their reading and do-rights (good deeds). For suggested books and do-right ideas, visit the Seattle Children's Kids Marathon pages at www.seattlemarathon.org.

Marathoners can keep track of their progress with the trackers provided on the website. Register by November 17th and you will receive via mail, the trackers, instructions, tokens and award certificates to be given to your child as he/she completes the miles, books and do-rights. If your child registers with a school group, these materials will be given to the school leader for distribution.

To download and print trackers for running, reading and "do-rights," as well as to access training tips, visit the Kids Marathon page at www.seattlemarathon.org/Kids/eventinfo.php

RACE DAY INFOBib Numbers: Participants must have and wear (pinned to the front) their official Bib Number. Kids running with groups must get their bibs from their group leaders or let their group leaders know that they are picking their bibs up individually. Parents and group leaders may pick up bibs at the following times and locations:

Friday, November 28th, 2014 EXPO, The Westin Seattle, Downtown Seattle11am-8pm (see page 3 for more info on EXPO)

Saturday, November 29th, 2014 Seattle Kids Marathon Staging AreaCheck-in 7:30-9:30am North Bleachers, Memorial Stadium, Seattle Center

PLEASE NOTE: One parent/coach may run with each child, but it is not mandatory. Should you choose to run, you must wear a Bib Number. For safety, no one is allowed on the course without a bib. Each child may have only one adult accompanying them. Every child who enters the event will be given two identical bibs — one for the child and one for an accompanying adult. For lost parent/child reasons, both the child and adult bibs will contain the child's information. Young children in strollers will also need to be entered into the event and wearing a bib number to be on the course.

Arrive Early: Nearly 2500 kids are expected to participate in this year’s Seattle Children's Kids Marathon. Please allow time for traffic, parking and check-in. Parking near the Seattle Center is available in several pay lots. Limited on-street parking is also available.

Check-In: Enter Memorial Stadium through the southeast gate (off 5th Avenue nearest the Space Needle) and report to the Seattle Children's Kids Marathon Staging Area, North Bleachers. Registration and Bib pick-up is 7:30-9:30am. Be sure to arrive early if you need to register, meet your group or pick up bibs.

Start: Kids, parents, teachers and coaches will move as a group from Memorial Stadium to the Start Line on 5th Avenue. Parents are encouraged to accompany their marathoners to the Start Line even if they are not running with them.

Finish: After the kids cross the finish line, they receive water and a Space Blanket and then proceed through a secure finisher chute to the Victory Recovery Area, located in the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. There, the kids reunite with family and friends to enjoy post-event festivities with Radio Disney and receive their finisher shirt, medal, certificate and Goody Bag. Note: One t-shirt is provided per registered child.

No Animals: Please remember that no animals are allowed on the course, in Memorial Stadium or the Victory Recovery Area except for Official Guide Animals.

REGISTER AS A TEAM / SCHOOL GROUP

More than 70 schools have incorporated the Seattle Children's Kids Marathon as a part of their yearly PE curriculum – from home school co-op groups to school teams as large as 200. We would love for your school to join in on the fun!

The Seattle Marathon Association provides promotional materials like posters and entry forms and even online team registration system to help keep your team organized.
