The Autumn Association
Match has been fished on the
first Saturday in October (with
one exception) for seventeen
years so you can imagine my
irritation when someone
suggested that we should re-
organise our programme
because of a charity match on
Bewl.
The suggestion was that Bewl
would have difficulty finding
teams (2 x 4 anglers) because
their better anglers would be
fishing in the charity match.
With a membership of over
500 anglers I do not feel too
sympathetic towards them.
However this does highlight a
problem for all organisers of
major events. There is no
national diary. One of the
Sunday Nationals publishes, in
January, a diary of major
events for all the big sports.
Previously it tried to include
Fly Fishing but could not get
the information and has now
abandoned it.
This information was needed
by mid December but in many
cases the organisers themselves
had not considered their
programmes, and in any case
no reservoir had opened their
diary for the following season.
Neither of these now pertain
and it should be possible to
have a diary for the following
season well before the end of
the year
Who would manage such a
diary? The S&TA are the
official body managing trout
and salmon fishing. It is not
unreasonable that they should
know what is happening in the
competition scene. Another
possibility would be one, or all
of the major angling fly fishing
publications. A third
possibility would be a fly
fishing web site.
www.fishandfly.com has an
extensive site and they publish
our newsletter.
Of course the S&TA would be
the best body to run such a
diary, but the essentials are that
such information is published
collectively and that organisers
accept it as a definitive diary.
If such a diary existed and
organisers of local, one off,
charity, or other events clashed
with a major competition and
had difficulty getting numbers
or helpers, they would only
have themselves to blame.

Sadly there was neither official
score sheet, or match report for
this match and everyone I have
contacted seems to have
suffered a memory erasure.
With regard to the match there
was an average bag of 3.56 fish
per angler, which was slightly
lower that one would hope. (I
always regard an average bag
that is equal or greater than
half a limit, as representing a
good match) But an average
weight of 2lbs 3.5oz per fish
represents quality fish.
With the last match in the
Group Programme being fished
on Rutland on Sunday 21st.
September this group is the
closest it has been for many
years. Any one of four teams
still has everything to fish for.
Bristol and Fish Hawks must
still fish to remain in this
group.

Rutland Water F.F.’s win on an
interestingly difficult Rutland
Water have almost guaranteed
them the Championship. They
have both a two point
advantage AND a weight
advantage over the next team
(Bewl ‘A’). If they do win it
will be, in my memory, the
first time they will be
Champions
Rutland was sunny and almost
windless. Once you stopped
the engine you stayed there,
with the occasional spin in a
shifting whisper.
Nobody caught fish easily or
quickly. Of the four limits
caught three were finished in
the last hour. Keith Jones
finished before 3.30pm.
Boats separated into three
areas. Fantasy Island – The
South Arm and the Lodge
Front. By mid afternoon
there were a huge number of
boats milling around in front of
the Lodge.
Most anglers stayed with
floating, or near floating lines
and nymphs. The trout
were NOT in a chasing mood
and whatever line, a slow
retrieve was almost mandatory.

With his superb Rainbow
Queen Mother F.F.’s win on a
windy Grafham has guaranteed
them the Group Two Trophy
(See Picture)
Mark Brinkman reports that
there was good cloud cover,
but a stiff N.W. wind. Fish
were widespread, although the
northern half of the reservoir
fished better in the morning
(Savages – Rectory Bay – G.
Buoy) and the southern areas
improved in the afternoon
(Plummer Park –West Bank -
the Lodge Frontage). There
were fish through the middle of
the reservoir all day.
One advantage of the wide
spread of the fish was that
there was no crowding of the
boats. Everybody caught fish
with the smallest bag being 2
fish.
As could be expected with fish
almost everywhere, successful
methods were catholic. Good
bags came to blobs, pulled on
slow sink lines – other good
bags came to traditional
nymphs on floaters.
Mark Brinkman caught the
heaviest fish in Savages Creek
twiddling and pulling a mini
muddler with a couple of
nymphs just in the surface film.

must wait to see how they fish
in the Autumn Match on
Rutland to see who takes the
