Beyond Sports
Beyond Sports Foundation uses the power of sport to transform lives by turning athletic ability
into life opportunity. Our student-athletes typically come from under-resourced families in
under-served communities and will need financial assistance in order to attend college. Many
of our student-athletes are from populations that are under-represented on college campuses.
Beyond Sports Foundation prepares student-athletes to succeed in life through our four pillars
of engagement: academic development, athletic development, social responsibility, and
mentorship & professional development. AmeriCorps Members will provide: academic
tutoring, mentoring, facilitate ACT/SAT test prep, implement a health and wellness program,
lead professional development workshops, and offer athletic support. Members will also assist
with financial literacy so that student-athletes and their families will be prepared to navigate
the college scholarship process.

College Possible
College Possible is a national nonprofit organization that helps low-income students earn
admission to college, as well as earn their bachelor’s degrees. College Possible is successful
due to its near-peer model, where our AmeriCorps members, who are recent college
graduates, develop close mentoring relationships with students as role models. We hold high
expectations for our team members, which carries over to high expectations in order for our
students to attain success. We have partnered with five high schools in CPS, with high
schools strategically choosing to bring our program as a resource to students in order to
increase college access and persistence rates for those enrolled at their buildings. In our third
year in Chicago, we are slated to support about 600 students at the high school and college
level.

The mission of Housing Forward is to transition people from housing crisis to housing stability.
Since 2009, AmeriCorps members have played an integral role in transitioning hundreds of
persons from economic and housing crisis to stability and self-sufficiency. In the coming year,
AmeriCorps members will directly 1.) reduce homelessness by improving access to services,
employment counseling and housing opportunities in west Cook County, and 2.) improve
linkage to nutritious food. Members will accomplish this by serving at Housing Forward, and
on-site with two partner agencies (BEDS Plus Care and Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry).
At the end of the grant period, it is anticipated that members will directly contribute to a
measurable reduction in homelessness, hunger and poverty in the communities served.

Illinois JusticeCorps
Illinois Bar Foundation
Illinois JusticeCorps is an innovative program that enhances access to justice for the growing
number of unrepresented people in the courts by empowering and training student volunteers
who help people without lawyers navigate the court system by providing legal information and
procedural guidance.
People coming to court without lawyers often do not know where to go, what to ask for or who
to see for documents. They often are confused, intimidated and scared. JusticeCorps
members serve as guides to make the courts more welcoming and less intimidating for people
who are navigating this complex and daunting system. JusticeCorps assistance allows people
to accomplish the purpose of their visit more efficiently. Members receive thorough training,
including learning about the activities in the courthouse, available resources and the
difference between legal information and advice.

Founded in 2008, Leave No Veteran Behind invests in Veterans to build better communities
through employment training, transitional jobs, and its Veteran educational debt relief
scholarship. The organization proudly serves heroes who have served their country honorably
and who seek to continue their service as assets in communities across America.

Through its AmeriCorps program, the organization will host 18 AmeriCorps members,
comprised of Veterans and young adults, and create one-to-one Veteran-youth pairs, training
them in the areas of Civilian Emergency Response Training (CERT), psychological first aid,
CPR/First Aid, Peer Support, and the Fundamentals of Risk Management (FoRM). Members
will work together in the community in a variety of safety capacities, and will engage with Cook
County's and the City of Chicago's offices of emergency management to identify, assess,
train, and connect community organizations to the city of Chicago’s safety and resiliency plan.
This project not only fills employment gaps for two populations with notoriously high
unemployment and underemployment rates, but also creates a pipeline for skilled workers
who specialize in community engagement, risk management, and emergency management
jobs.

Illinois AmeriCorps*State Programs
AmeriCorps East St. Louis/Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House (the Neighborhood
House) is designed to improve the academic skills of the students in District 189 by all means
possible. AmeriCorps East St. Louis is designed to address a broad range of community
needs by addressing the following: 1) Education: understanding that children must obtain a
good education, graduate from high school, and pursue post-secondary education programs;
2) Fighting Hunger: In the St. Clair County alone, research demonstrates that food insecurity
leads to poor academic performance; therefore we seek alternatives by means of providing
food through our food pantry to those in need--which is approximately 15,800 persons who
live in extreme poverty throughout the county and 3) Building Capacity: in this focus area we
are working to build character among Corps Members and youth in our community and
aligning them on a positive trajectory to becoming self-sufficient while grooming our future
leaders. In addition, our Corps Members are actively engaged in District 189 students’
academic assistance, also our Corps Members actively operate a food pantry in the
community and complete a variety of other community service projects that will lead to
positive and meaningful outcomes.

Thirty-one AmeriCorps members (22.12 MSYs) will leverage 500 volunteers to provide increased
economic and educational opportunities to two underserved populations – low literate
economically disadvantaged adults residing in various communities in the greater Chicago area
and teens incarcerated in the Illinois Youth Centers. Through the members and the volunteers
they recruit, it is anticipated that 1400 low literate economically disadvantaged adults will receive
one-to-one, small group or classroom instruction in basic literacy skills, ESL, or GED preparation
and another 250 will receive job search assistance. Among the incarcerated youth, 300 will
receive individualized tutorial instruction in math, reading and GED preparation.

Project YES! connects caring adults with youth in and around the West Town Community.
Members will be assigned to one site for the program year to have the opportunity to build
lasting relationships with students and teachers. While at the site members will be partnered
with classroom teachers to assist in all aspects of the academic curriculum. Members will also
implement after-school programming based on the needs of the school. Regular training
sessions will help members to better serve their schools and community, and give the
members the opportunity to plan quality service events. Trainings will include: classroom
management, community awareness, planning effective volunteer projects, and civic
engagement. Project YES! is a team based corporative environment that encourages
members to work together to increase understanding in the schools as well as increasing
volunteerism in the community.

Illinois AmeriCorps*State Programs
For 23 years, Public Allies’ signature AmeriCorps program has been a vital bridge to
employment and education opportunities for our AmeriCorps Allies. We are a leadership
development organization that recruits diverse young adults with a passion for community
service and places them into intensive non-profit apprenticeships. With AmeriCorps, Public
Allies provides capacity building to roughly 40 community based agencies that are working to
improve education, economic development, and community safety. Our model utilizes hands on
experience, community building, and leadership development training to give our Members a
well-rounded non-profit experience. We focus on recruiting Members from the Chicago region
and each year work to build a cohort that represents the diversity of our great city. The
apprenticeships are as diverse in responsibility as the Allies that fill them. Members play vital
roles in project management, community outreach, and program support for non-profits, schools,
and government agencies.
Our Allies also complete a separate Team Service Project during their term of service that is
focused on collaborating with a local non-profit to deliver a specific result. This service project
allows Allies to apply their learning, solve problems in a team-based setting, and expand their
experience and networks into multiple communities around Chicago. Each Ally is assigned a
Program Manager to ensure their development and performance objectives stay on track
throughout the year. Ally apprenticeships traditionally lay the groundwork for a lifetime of service
– over 80% of our alumni move on into careers in non-profit and government work.
“If you can do it by yourself, it’s not big enough.” Our organization was founded on the idea that
our nation is stronger when we harness the ingenuity and can-do spirit of entire communities --
when everyone leads. We know that to successfully improve outcomes for our Allies, our
community partner organizations, and our communities, we need strong and healthy
partnerships! Join us as we expand the power of national service!

Up2Us Sport Coaches
Up2Us Sports is a coalition of more than 1,200 nonprofit organizations that believe in the
power of sports to fight childhood obesity, end academic failure, and reduce gang participation.
Up2Us Sports’ flagship program is Coach Across America (CAA), identifies, trains and
supports the nation’s best and brightest role models to serve as coach mentors and bring
sports-based youth development to the most underserved communities. Our Coaches receive
40 hours of training in youth development and mentoring strategies-including sports-based
youth development (SBYD) foundation, the brain and trauma, behavior management and
culture-to help them cultivate caring, trust-based relationships with youth, and to foster SBYD
outcomes. CAA coaches understand that every program session, practice or game is a
chance to positively impact a child’s future. A year of service through CAA provides our
Coaches with skills that help them succeed in future career opportunities where many alumni
of the program pursue careers in sports-based youth development or higher educational
opportunities.
