VOL. I l l NO. I I AMERICAN WOMEN'S VOLUNTARY SE RV ICE S MARCH/ 1945GOSSIP HERE AND THEREWell', here we go again boys - with another deskful of good lettersto read and relay to you. Just take this flash from JIaROLD LOTH S l/ofor instance. Not only are we tickled pink that he took time out towrite us at all but we feel pretty important that any envelope address-ed to "The Friend", Mi iburn should wing its way directly to us as ifthe postman knew at a glance who it was for! Of course we are asfriendly as all get out, but that Uncle Sam realizes it gives us awarm glow. Harold is on board a carrier and sends us the ship's paperdescribing the part they took in the Lingay&n operation. No wonderthe army got ashore in such good style and we only hope your job willbe finished so you can come home soon. And speaking of coming home, Sgt. JOHN B. SCHILLING writes from theSeparation Center at Fort Dix to say he gets homo most Sundays - alucky break for all except ourselves because, with the office closedthat day it means we never see him. However1, tiie Separation Centeris one of the spots you'll all be coming through on your way homo sokeep an eye peeled for Jack. By the way, Sarge - that idea of yoursregarding letter writing is a good one but read our Permanent Noticefor the answer to it.All is forgiven, Sgt. JOHN E. JACOBUS even if you didn't stop in tosay "hello" last July and .also because this is the first we've heardfrom you in a year. You know how we go for the soft soap, so afterall your compliments we're putty in your hands. To bring you all upto date on the Jacobus news, he's out in Snlina, Kansas working onB-29s and sounds as though a change of scenery would be welcome. Wesee what you. moan when you say that sometimes you wish you were backin high school with all your buddies but every one's homework seems tobe different nowadays. Don't forgot, we expect a visit whenever thatnext leave comes up - and no excuses this time. Now this just backs us up because no matter how long .'we go on hopingeventually a "first" letter from an old friend oomos through. . Thistime Lf. PRESTON T. COURSEN is the white haired boy who V-mails usfrom the front- lines. After training for four and a half years Bubsays he's high in the mountains and delighted with the change from thetorrid wastes, tarantulas, scorpions and coral snakes which help makeup Texas, (if the Chamber of Commerce is following us too closely putthat six^shooter away - tho Lieutenant is only kidding), Keep on past-ing the Krauts because they can't.go on forever and even their thickskulls will have to absorb tho"fact they're losing sooner or later.Best of luck and whenever you feel in the mood to write us again youknow how' thrilled we'll be..

All right, all right St eve , but may. we say that evide nt-ly you haven't changed a bit and that a snow plow would have'a toughtine with that Blarney? 5.SMALL WORLDL"t. (j.g.) WALTER KASIS pens us an air mail epistle from the Pacificwith the S, W, news that when he came ashore from-li is D E. recently,on one of those islands where they have a so-called Officer'a Club, whom should he bump into, while enjoying a warm beer or two , but Ens.BOB LOHSE, who had been one of his students back in the M.H.S. days ILt. Kabis says that seeing the ex-student transformed into a fellowofficer made him feel very young again (Good gravy, who ever accusedyou of any white whiskers!) Thanks, Lieutenant, for sending us theOctober Tattle envelope, which seems to have covered about as much ofthe globe as you have, and it's heartening to know that our Tattlesdo eventually reach their man (or almost always anyhow{) Incidentally, one of your former "Small World encounters" CHARLES LYON S l/c was into seR us today and mentioned his meeting with you somewhere in Waleslast year, and how embarrassed he was at being "out of uniform", allof which we wrote up in the February '44 Tattle, when you V-mailed usabout said meeting. Don't forget to write your "Dear Gals" soonagain! And the "Item" is printing your latest "Billy-doo" to us !We always beam happily when we espy a letter from JOHN BRAY, S l/c,especially when he calls us his "Dear morale builder-uppers" (al-though the title does sound a bit like something one might find amonggymnasium equipment,) Anyhow Johnny wrote in his last letter that hehad seen Lt, (j.g,) Harobine's name in the United Seaman's ServiceClub in Calcutta but that he did not meet up with the owner of thename. Since putting out to sea again Johnny discovered somehow thathe had talked to Lt. Harobine, who was aboard Johnny's Ship while inport, only at the time Johnny did not realize the fact; he merelythought he was talking to an officer attached to the port office. Allof which sounds highly complicated but we knew you would want to knowall about it. Seaman Bray also tells us he has seen the name ofDeane Uptegrove from Short Hills in the ServiceiClub register wherehe now is, Somewhere in Iran, so we only hope his next letter won'tbear similar tidings of a "sight unknown" nature. By the way, theUptegrove lad's parents just moved here from Orange last September,so he is not on our Tattle list as yet, having had no requests fromthat quarter. Here's a nice Small World double-header for you ! Lt, (j.g.) RICHARDKEEPERS and JOHN VOORHEES, M.M. 2/0, both of the Coast Guard, havewritten us simultaneously to say that they are assigned to the sameCoast Guard manned Army F, S, Ship, of which Lt, Herpers is executiveofficer, somewhere out in the S. W, Pacific, Though neither had metbefore, it was the first time either one had met up with a home townface and both enjoyed talking about the good old days back here. By-the-by,. Dick, we wrote up your V-mail letter for last issue, and withhorrified eyes, we noticed our item was missing when the Tattle emergedfrom the maw of the press. So, if said paragraph can be locatedwe'll squeeze it in as an addenda to this issue, and pray for yourpatience and understanding anent samel As for you, Johnny, your neg-lect in writing us for two long years is completely forgiven as weperuse the sweet sayings about "us" in your letter. Howe ver, don'tthink for one minute me lad, that we desire to wait two more yearsfor another letter. Oh, dear me, no IWheel Another double-header! Lt, GEORGE PENDERGAST and Sgt. JOHNHERRIGEL have both penned us of their happy meeting out in the Mari-anas where they now seem to share the same A.P.O, number, though wenote there is a slight difference in their battalion numbers. Georgewrites that his only complaint is that civilization seems to be clos~ing in on their atoll and that he fears that pretty soon they willhave to revert to wearing ties and giving their shoes a- daily shine ifsuch goings on keep up. He also invites us to open a branch Tattle, of-fice out there (Marianas here we come I Or wouldn't we like to though! However, it looks as though we are handcuffed to the humdrtim home ex-istence so we"'11 just make Lt. Pendergast our Marianas special fea-ture reporter and let us hear from you soon, sonl) In John's letterho writes that it sure was fun discussing the good ole days in "StumpyMountains" with the aforementioned Lieutenant, He adds that all outthere are trying to do their bit to bring the war to an end as soon aspossible and we're with you on that m'boyt Sorry we can't mail youtwo lads some of that snow you both seem to be pining for but we'refresh out - thank goodness! And thank the recent rains, tool
