Tips for Losing WeightThe Holidays are coming! Focus on these strategies if

you want to feel full all day on less food and dropsome pounds in the process.

1): Try and eat enough lean protein and fiber. "Protein isthe number one thing to help you feel full," says EmilyBanes, RD, clinical dietitian at Houston Northwest MedicalCenter. "The second thing is fiber."

2): You should eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables. Studies have shown that changing your eating habits tofocus on these water-and fiber-rich foods will help youmaintain weight loss for up to six years.

3): Sipping Some Soup. Adding two low-calorie soupsto your diet every day could stave off hunger pangs andkeep you satisfied longer. Choose soups that are broth-based, not cream-based, to reduce the calorie count; alsolook for low sodium soups.Consider chunky, pureed veg-etable soups, as they have been shown to produce the mostlasting full feeling. Timing your soup so that you have itbefore a meal also reduces the amount you eat at that mealby about 20 percent.

4): Eat whole grains. A serving of whole grains will stickwith you longer than any serving of refined wheat bread orany other refined flour product, for that matter. Most re-fined flour is white and often bleached.

5): Pick the Right “Airy Type” Snack. If you must snackand you don't have a piece of fruit or a veggie tray on hand, choose the snack food that has more air in it - think cheesepuffs instead of potato chips, rice cakes instead of cookies. You will feel just as full as you would if you ate the sameserving size of another snack, but you will consume fewercalories on average.

6:) Exercise. Whether it is walking, bike riding, joiningan exercise class or a gym, exercise is an important factorin maintaining weight and good health. Check with yourdoctor first before starting any exercise program.

7): Develop a "low-energy density" eating plan. Thismeans that you can eat a large quantity of foods that do nothave a high calorie count. Learning about portion sizes andcounting calories is one way to approach this, but you canalso try the plate method, which dictates that half your platebe full of veggies, one-quarter dedicated to a starch (prefer-

ably whole grain), and one-quarter to a lean protein. Re-member that plate size doesmatter and a smaller platesize is being recommended& to fill it up with lean pro-tein, veggies and fruit! Wehave to change our eatinghabits to healthier ones tohelp us lose weight and tohelp us maintain it. It is alifestyle change not a diet.
