    Indicator a. Establish challenging academic goals in elementary, middle/junior high, and high school

    ACTIVITY: Getting Admitted into the California Public University System.

    TARGET GROUP: High School (9th grade)

    GOAL: Students will acquire knowledge of the sequence of high school courses that must be completed to be eligible for admittance to a California State University (CSU) or the University of California (UC).

    STRATEGIES:

    Introduce the subject (see Instructor Notes, Section I).

    Administer the pre-test (see Evaluation Tool below).

    Access the California Career Center website www.calcareercenter.org o Select Middle and High School from the left navigation bar. o Scroll to A-G Courses Required by California Public University Systems.

    Pass out the Scavenger Hunt worksheet and explain the activity.

    Allow students time to work individually or in pairs.

    Review the answers using the Scavenger Hunt Key and encourage the students to correct any incorrect responses.

    Elicit responses from the students on the information they gained as a result of completing this activity.

    Culminating activity is to play Jeopardy. Log onto https://jeopardylabs.com/. Click on Start Browsing. In the search area enter: A-G Requirements for UCs and CSUs. Click on search. Select A-G Requirements for UCs and CSUs Jeopardy Template. (Or go directly to https://jeopardylabs.com/play/a-g-requirements-for-ucs-and-csus.) Select the number of teams and start the game. Team scores are calculated when you click the + or at the bottom of the screen indicating which team answered correctly.

    Play using Jeopardy rules meaning the answer is to be in the form of a question; continue until all categories have been addressed.

    Review the two basic requirements for admission to a UC or CSU and the minimum grade needed in each of the required courses.

    Administer the post-test (see Evaluation Tool below).

    Closing statements (see Instructor Notes, Section II).

    1. Both the UCs and the CSUs require two years of history/social science; however, the UC system will accept a score of 550 on the SAT Subject Test to satisfy one year of U.S. History.

    2. List the acceptable courses that may be taken to meet the A requirement for the UCs: world history, cultures and geography and U.S. history and/or civics or American government.

    3. The B requirement lists four years of college prep English whose curriculum must include two very specific learning activities. They are reading/literature and writing/composition.

    4. While 3 years are required in the C area, both the CSUs and UCs recommend 4 years.

    5. Students may begin taking courses in the C requirement area as early as 7th grade according to the UCs if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses.

    6. A score of three, four, or five on the Calculus AB or Calculus BC Exam satisfies three years of mathematics according to the UCs.

    7. A score of three, four, or five on the AP Statistics Exam satisfies both elementary algebra and intermediate algebra according to the UCs.

    I. Introduction to the subject:

    Are you thinking about going to college after high school? If so, it is time to start your college planning now. Today you are going to be introduced to the A-G subject requirements that are needed to be eligible for admission to a four-year public university in California. The A-G curriculum is a sequence of fifteen required (and three more recommended) high school courses. You need to start taking them now if you want the option of attending a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) school when you graduate. There are two main reasons why mastering the A-G courses during high school are important. First, having a more challenging curriculum during high school will help you do better in college. Second, employers want the same skills colleges do.

    Employers want their employees to have:

    Strong reading and comprehension abilities so they can understand informational and technical texts.

    A strong literature background so they can better understand other cultures and co-workers.

    Strong writing and research skills.

    Strong mathematics skills.

    This is true for all jobsfrom doctors to plumbers!

    II. Closing statements:

    You now have an excellent grasp of the subject requirements needed to be eligible for a four-year public university in California. I would like you to consider making two specific plans for yourself right now:

    Graduate from high school by meeting all the graduation requirements of the school district.

    Take the classes that will prepare you for college by enrolling in the A-G subject requirement courses for admission to a CSU or UC.
