“When you use a horse to open up someone’s diaphragm so they can breathe better, that’s just physical therapy. But, when you give a child a voice through a horse – that’s just magic.” These words ring especially true in the case of Eric, who was diagnosed with Autism as a 3-year-old. Eric is living proof that the combination of horses and humans often results in amazing things. When Eric arrived for his first therapeutic riding session, it was a struggle for his mom, Sue, to simply place the helmet on his head. Even once Eric was lifted onto the horse, he continued to scream in fear. As soon as the horse walked forward, however, he broke into a smile. And he has been smiling ever since. Initially unable to communicate effectively, Eric began to learn signs at the riding cen- ter. The first thing he signed was “horse – walk – please.” Eric’s horse became his motiva- tion to communicate. Words came alive to Eric in a way they never had before. Signing at the barn gave Eric a deeper understanding of words and their meanings as they apply in the rest of the world. Following one evening’s riding session, Eric spoke the words “Bye Paul!” to a family friend. After years of silence, this was a remarkable accomplishment. Though the life as a parent of a child with Autism is difficult, Eric’s mom says “all that goes away when you walk into the barn.” With horses there is no more disappointment, only empowerment. The American Quarter Horse Foundation recently kicked off its Because of a Horse campaign to raise awareness and funds for America’s Horse Cares, a program supporting therapeutic riding. Because of a horse, Eric was able to become a stronger person with new hope for success and happiness in his future. Horses gave him the opportunity to make improvements his parents thought impossible just the year before. Economic struggles have made it more difficult than ever for therapeutic riding facili- ties to stay afloat. The longevity of these centers is so important. Riders develop personal relationships with the special horses, instructors and staff that are vital to their successful treatment. When therapeutic riding centers close, people like Eric suffer as a result. Protect access to these life-changing programs by making a gift to America’s Horse Cares. Every child has a diagnosis and a story. Help us keep all of their dreams within reach. The promotional campaign Because of a Horse is raising awareness and funds for America’s Horse Ca- res, a program supporting therapeutic riding. In 2002, the American Quarter Horse Foundation searched for a way to provide financial assistance to therapeutic riding organizations that inspire or im- prove the quality of life of individuals with emotional, physical and cognitive disabilities. An overwhelming response of grant requests illustrated the growing need for therapeutic riding assistance and paved the way for America’s Horse Cares. “By providing financial assistance to therapeutic riding organizations, America’s Horse Cares helps facilitate a relationship between American Quarter Horses and challenged riders,” said Foundation Executive Director Gary Carpenter. “The Foundation’s goal is to strengthen our support for centers that are pairing horses with humans for the benefit of both.” Thanks to the many donors and support from AQHA’s Corporate Partner Farnam, the Foundation has awarded more than $218,000 in assistance to more than 80 centers across the country. The Foundation’s partnerships with Farnam and North American Riding for the Handicapped Association offer rich and re- warding experiences that will provide many challenged individuals with confidence and self-esteem through therapeutic riding sessions. Each year, more children and adults with disabilities whose lives, limbs and language are limited are posi- tively impacted by riding a horse. Whether it is autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Downs syndrome, spina bifida or other disabilities, horses are making a measurable impact on their lives. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE COUPLE HONORS WORLD CHAMPION THROUGH GIFT

Frank and Linda Berris of Sparta, Michigan, won their first world championship and made a decision to give back to the American Quarter Horse Foundation to commemorate their horse. No Doubt Im Lazy, a 2006 bay stallion, won the World in 2-year-old western pleasure at the 2008 AQHA World Championship Show with Mitch Lecky aboard.

“Please accept this gift as a token of our appreciation and for all that AQHA has done for us,” said Frank. “We have made AQHA a big part of our life and truly enjoy being active in it.”

Our sincerest thanks to Frank and Linda for their generosity and support of the important programs of the American Quarter Horse Foundation. You too can join the American Quarter Horse Foundation Annual Fund Leader-ship Society which is a group of individuals who choose to give to the Foun-dation’s Annual Fund at a level of $1,000 or more on an annual basis. Like Frank and Linda these individuals believe in supporting the Foundation’s work to provide: youth scholarships, equine research grants, grants to thera-peutic riding centers through America’s Horse Cares, and resources to pre-serve the rich heritage of our breed through the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. Unless designated for a specific program listed above, donations to the Annual Fund are utilized to support the administration of these exceptional programs. This type of unrestricted contribution is extremely important to the work of the Foundation as it allows us to offer these programs without cost to the actual program fund. Participants in the Foundation’s Leadership Society pave the way for a bright future for the people and horses served by the Foundation’s programs. We hope you will consider joining the Leadership Society of the Foundation’s Annual Fund by making your contribution today. For more information about the American Quarter Horse Foundation An-nual Fund and its Leadership Society, please call Chris Sitz, Director of Devel-opment and Advancement Services at (806) 378-5032 or e-mail [email protected].

We introduced you to Brianna Hogg and her beloved horse Brownie who she lost due to complications from Cushings in a previous issue. We are thrilled to report that one of AQHF’s strongest advocates, Cecilia Hylton of Gainesville, Virginia, met Brianna at the AQHA Convention in San Antonio and was so touched by Brianna’s story and subsequent gift to Equine Research that she has gifted Brianna with a new horse. Stay tuned for more details in the next edition of Foundation Quarterly!

Contribution - defined

1. the part played by a person in bringing about a result; “I am proud of my contribu-tion in advancing the project.” 2. a voluntary gift (as of money or service or ideas) made to some worthwhile cause 3. act of giving in common with others for a common purpose especially to a charity 4. a writing for publication especially one of a collection of writings as an article or story

When one considers the word “contribution,” writing a check often comes to mind first. Let us not be so restrictive in our thinking. I particularly like the language used by many faiths in their efforts to engage their congregations in the life of the church. Members are asked to share of their “time, talent and treasure.” This request speaks eloquently to a range of possible acts of generosity. Because of a Horse represents just such an opportunity. Through your affiliate or other equine-related organization, you can contribute to the world of therapeutic riding – one that will bear fruit in many ways. By actively participating in this program, you are spreading the word about the value of therapeutic riding. Your contact might just reach a family who does not know of the progress that can happen with their child or a physician who has not con-sidered it for a patient. Knowing whom you will touch or how you will touch them is not important, getting in the game is what’s important. To learn more, I invite you to visit us on the Web at americashorsecares.com and help us support this important cause.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

It’s amazing that 14 calves can transform over the years into several ranches covering more than 135,000 acres in four states, but that’s exactly what happened for Walter Merrick. Inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1993, Merrick influenced generations of American Quarter Horse owners, breeders and trainers. The heart of Merrick’s exhibit is a hand-tooled sad-dle made by world champion saddle bronc rider, John McBeth, at The Cowboy Shop in Burden, Kansas. The saddle was commissioned by Merrick’s children for a Father’s Day gift in 1974. The left fender lists twenty of Merrick’s champion horses, such as Missle Bar, 1958 and 1959 AQHA racing champion; Three Bars, AQHA Hall of Fame horse; Tonto Bars Hank, 1960 and 1961 AQHA racing champion; and Easy Jet, AQHA Hall of Fame horse. The right fender has the names of 20 “good fillies,” such as Easter Rose, awarded AQHA Dam of Distinction; Little Lena Bars, 1964 Superior race horse; Lena’s Bar, AQHA Hall of Fame horse; and Mayflower Ann, 1969 Supe-rior race horse. Each of these horses made an impact on not only the racing industry, but the breeding industry as well. On his 14 Ranch, Walter Merrick produced some of the top-running American Quarter Horses of all time. Merrick has been quoted as saying, “We raise the horses we run and run the horses we raise.” Visit us in Amarillo or on the Web at aqhhalloffame.com to learn more about Walter Merrick.

Making a contribution is a very personal decision. One that should be made carefully, with regard to not just the amount and pur-pose of the gift, but also who you could honor or memorialize. Recently AQHF was very pleased to accept gifts from the family and friends of Brooke Ware to the Swayze Woodruff Memorial Scholarship Fund. This endowed scholarship fund provides for a scholarship to a student in the South-east region. Brooke’s commitment to education and to horses prompted her parents and a close family friend, Ivan Holder, to make gifts in her honor. By carefully considering their gift, they not only honored Brooke and her goals but also enhanced the awareness and support for the Swayze Woodruff Memorial Scholarship Fund. “Swayze left footprints in our hearts and in the hearts of others,” explained Swayze’s mother, Mary Bess. “When someone donates to this fund, they leave footprints on our hearts, too, because they are thinking about Swayze. Swayze can continue to touch people’s lives and help educate young adults. We are very grateful to the Wares and to Ivan for their generous gifts in Brooke’s honor.” In one decision, the Wares and Mr. Holder honored Brooke, Swayze and her parents, and helped young students receive an educa-tion — now that’s making it personal! The first Swayze Woodruff Scholarship was given to Ryan Read in 2000. Since then, Swayze has touched the lives of many students including: Lisa Rigdon, Katie Farrar, Cynthia DuBois, Derrick Craft, Alice Buehler, Jessica Jones, Amy Jernigan and Korry Bailey.
