Paul born 1915 was best known forthe development of the mass-producedsolid body electric guitar a landmarkinnovation that helped usher in the eraof Rock n Roll The Gibson Les Paulfirst manufactured in 1952 and madefamous by legends such as Eric ClaptonPete Townshend and Keith Richardsremains ubiquitous on stages andrecording studios around the world
Paul designed his first electric guitar in1929 eventually gravitating to a solidbody design as the demands of volumeand tone became too much for standardhollow-body designs His first attemptdubbed ldquothe logrdquo was a simple pieceof 4x4 lumber fitted with strings andelectronics Evolving his design andaggressively marketing his idea TheGibson Guitar Company agreed to themanufacture of a Les Paul designedguitar a classic design that remainsessentially unchanged today
