HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The fun times we have had atWestland Joy!

The First ThanksgivingFestivals with the spirit of giving

thanks have been common in manycultures, so determining the originalThanksgiving celebration provesdifficult. But tradition recognizes the1621 feast between the Pilgrimsettlers at Plymouth Colony andneighboring American Indians asAmerica’s first Thanksgiving.

Sailing from England aboard theMayflower, the Pilgrims arrived inpresent-day Massachusetts in the fallof 1620, yet remained on the ship forseveral months. When the colonistsmoved ashore the following spring, they were visited by twoEnglish-speaking Indians, Samosetand Squanto, who showed thePilgrims how to hunt and grow theirown food. Squanto also served as aninterpreter and mediator between thesettlers and the neighboringWampanoag tribe.

Sometime between Sept. 21 andNov. 1, the Pilgrims organized a feastto celebrate the success of their firstcrop. Around 90 Wampanoag, including Chief Massasoit, joined thecolonists for the festivities, whichlasted for three days and includedgames, singing and dancing, inaddition to the elaborate meal.

The Pilgrims’ records indicate thatregional fowl, such as ducks, geese, swans and, yes, probably turkey, wereserved at the feast, along with venisonbrought by the Wampanoag.Historians believe that other foodspresent at the meal included fish andshellfish, beans, onions, porridgemade from cornmeal, berries, squashand pumpkin—but no pumpkin pie.

Talking Turkey

For more than30 years, the expertsat the ButterballTurkey Talk-Linehave been at theready, answeringhome cooks’ holidayturkey-relatedquestions. Here’s ataste of some of thehotline’s mostmemorable inquiries:

A Talk-Line expertasked a caller whatstate her turkey wasin, meaning howthawed it was.The caller replied,“Florida.”

After finding aturkey from 1969 inhis father’s freezer,a man phoned inrequesting tips onhow to cook the30-year-old bird.

A woman calleddisappointed, wondering why herturkey had no breastmeat. The Butterballstaffer figured out thecaller’s turkey wasplaced upside downon the platter.

A man cut histurkey in half with achainsaw, thenwanted to know if thechain’s grease wouldaffect the turkey.
