May Day

May DayDelivery

For centuries, thefirst day of May,commonly calledMay Day, has beenobserved as acelebration of spring, new life and thecoming summer.

One tradition thatmarks this occasionis the giving of Maybaskets, often byschoolchildren.

The baskets maybe small and simpleor large andelaborate. They areoften filled withflowers, candy orsmall trinkets.

The person givingthe basket usuallyleaves it on thedoorknob ordoorstep of a friendor neighbor, rings thebell or knocks on thedoor, then quicklyruns away.

Although it hasbeen fading inpopularity since thelate 20th century, theidea of giving Maybaskets is appealingto some youngerpeople, who arestarting to revive thetradition.

Remember

Mother KnowsBest

No matter when orwhere you grew up,you are likely to relateto the advice andadmonishmentsmothers frequentlyvoice whenparenting. See ifthese classic, andsometimes comical,“motherisms” soundfamiliar:

Eat yourvegetables; they’regood for you.

Put that down; youdon’t know where it’sbeen.

If everyone elsejumped off a cliff, would you do it, too?

Can you think ofothers that you’veheard or usedyourself?

Fashion

RememberWhen: Gloves

and HatsLadies, young and

old, once consideredeven the nicestensemble to beincomplete without apair of gloves and ahat, especially inspringtime. Gloveswere often short andwhite, but sometimesmatched the color ofa coordinating hat.Ranging from simpleto showstoppers, hats were made ofmaterials like fabric, felt, straw or velvet, and were frequentlyembellished withfeathers, ribbons, flowers and netting.

Some of us grewup with the rule thatwhite shoes andclothing were notallowed to be wornuntil after MemorialDay. We would movethose summerclothes in and winterclothes out.
