Enjoying the Party

The Human HeartNot only is the heart a familiar

symbol of Valentine’s Day, but it’salso the focus of another Februaryobservance: American Heart Month.Celebrate this incredible organ withthese facts:

• Every day, the heart beatsaround 100,000 times.During the average person’slifespan, the heart may beat3 billion times.

• A healthy adult heart beats60 to 100 times a minute at rest.Well-trained athletes usuallyhave a slower resting heart rate.

• In most people, the heart islocated in the center of thechest, between the lungs, withthe largest part of the organtilting toward the left. The leftlung is smaller than the rightlung to allow room forthe heart.

• Make two fists and hold themtogether. This is roughly thesize of your heart.

• The average heart weighsbetween 8 and 10 ounces,or about the same weight asan apple.

• A man’s heart is about25 percent larger than awoman’s and can pump moreblood in a single beat. Femalehearts make up for theirsmaller size by beating faster,by about 8 beats per minute.

• The heart does the mostphysical work of any muscleduring a lifetime, pumping1.5 gallons of bloodevery minute.
