Becoming a SeniorMy daughter is fast approaching

her 60th birthday and already hassecured an AARP membershipwelcoming her into a new world ofdiscounts and an information basefor this phase of life. The word“senior” has a variety of concepts ...elder (Native American) ... retirementyears. In high school, the word“senior” signified our last yearmoving on ... heading for the future ...moving forward!

When I hit the 60th mark, the word“senior” was negative. My ownmother hated the word so much, sheorganized a social group at herchurch (at age 80) and called itFifty Plus!

My entrance to the senior worldwas at the Golden Agers Club. I didnot know a soul, but was hopeful tomake new friends. The only activitywhich appealed to me was tabletennis. At the invitation of three kindlyand empathetic gentlemen, I joinedthem in a game. What I had chalked

up to be kindness turned out to bemeanness, as my opponentcontinued to serve the ball justbarely over the net. Every returnshot caused me to lean into thetable just a little bit more until thetable collapsed to the floor.

The guys laughed ... I didn’t ... Iquietly crept out of the roomheaded for the exit and home!!
