MemorableMelody: ‘Sleigh

Ride’Who would have

guessed that theholiday standard“Sleigh Ride” waswritten during asummer heat wave? But that was the casewhen LeroyAnderson begancomposing the songin the summer of1946. Two yearslater, conductorArthur Fiedler and theBoston PopsOrchestra debutedthe song—completewith jingling sleighbells, the clip-clop ofhorses’ hooves andthe crack of a whip—and it quicklybecame an audiencefavorite. In 1950,Mitchell Parish addedlyrics to the tune, which has since beenrecorded by dozensof artists.

Small Snowy ScenesWith a glass-enclosed miniature

scene surrounded by falling snow, theremay be no sweeter seasonal décor thana snow globe.

Appearing at the 1878 world’s fairin Paris, the first snow globes werewater-filled paperweights that featureda male figurine holding an umbrella. When the paperweight was turnedupside down, a white powder inside felllike snow. At the 1889 world’s fair, again in Paris, a vendor sold snowglobes containing a tiny replica of thenew Eiffel Tower.

In 1900, Austrian Erwin Perzyreceived the first patent for a snowglobe. Inspired by shoemakers whowould place a water-filled globe in frontof a candle to enhance the light in theirshops, Perzy tried the same thing in anexperiment with the newly inventedelectric lightbulb. Hoping to furtherreflect the bulb’s light, Perzy filled theglobe with semolina flakes. As theflakes fell, Perzy noticed theresemblance to snow. He decided toadd a miniature church to his globe, and in five years, he started his ownhand-crafted snow globe company.

Throughout the century, snow globesfound great success as souvenirs andcollectibles, their popularity boostedafter being used in key scenes inthe 1940s films “Kitty Foyle” and“Citizen Kane.”

Talk About It

SweetMemories

Gingerbread, candy canes, sugarcookies, fudge ...This is the time ofyear when manypeople indulge theirsweet tooth. Use thefollowing questionsto discuss yourfavorite desserts.

What is yourall-time favoritedessert? Describewhat makes it sodelicious. Whomakes the bestversion?

Do you have a stardessert that you’vetaken to familygatherings andpotlucks? What is it?Where did you findthe recipe? What doothers love about it?

When you wereyounger, did youlearn to bake fromsomeone else—perhaps a parent orgrandparent? Whatmemories do youhave of preparingdesserts with others?

Have you evermade your owncandy, such aspeanut brittle, divinityor taffy?

We had a great Halloween! Best Costume goes to Anna!

It’s Coming!Whether we like it or not, winter is on its way!

Please remember...do not park at the west end of theparking lots when the snow flies. We use that area topile snow. Ranch units need to keep their porchesfree of lawn furniture so that the walks canbe shoveled.

Common Cold MythsWhile there is no cure for the

common cold, much folkloresurrounds the illness, from how it’sspread to home remedies. Here aresome popular myths and the truthbehind them.

The cold causes a cold. Have youever heard someone say to bundle upor you’ll get sick? People do tend tocatch more colds in winter, but frigidair is not to blame. We spend moretime indoors and in closer contactwith others during this time, causinggerms to spread more easily.

Coughs and sneezes are the onlyway colds are spread. Airborne germscan make others nearby sick, butstudies show that hand-to-handcontact is the biggest culprit inspreading viruses.

Hand sanitizer works as well assoap. Gels are fine in a pinch, butscrubbing with soap and water is thebest way to rid your hands of germs. If sanitizer is all that’s available, itneeds to contain at least 60 percentalcohol to be effective.

Feed a cold, starve a fever. Thetruth is simple: Eat if you are hungry, but don’t force yourself. Stayinghydrated is important when you are ill,so be sure to drink plenty of fluids.
