On the evening of Tuesday, May 17, 2016, the
American Foundation of Savoy Orders sponsored
its annual spring benefit, Festa della Primavera, under
the patronage of Their Royal Highnesses Prince
Victor Emmanuel and Princess Marina of Savoy.
The elegantly grand Columbus Citizens Foundation
townhouse in New York City served as the venue.
During the festive reception, the Savoy
Foundation’s Fourth Annual Chivalry Award was
presented to Dr. Anthony S. Fauci in recognition of
his courageous, innovative leadership and public
service, extraordinary integrity and courage, as well
as his own pioneering research and collaborations to
promote high public health standards among
vulnerable populations, children and all Americans.
The Chivalry Award recognizes those who carry
forth the humanitarian and hospitaller mission of
the centuries‐old Savoy Orders. Dr. Fauci is the
Director of the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and has dedicated his
life to protecting people in this country and
throughout the world from infectious diseases.
Approximately 100 guests and dignitaries gathered
to salute the achievements of Dr. Fauci. The event
benefitted children’s and veterans’ education and
healthcare programs in the United States.
Dr. Fauci is a distinguished American
immunologist, renowned for his world‐wide
research and pioneering contributions to the
treatment of immune‐related and infectious
diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS, Ebola and Zika
viruses. He has tirelessly educated Congress and the
public about the devastating impact they have had.
Dr. Fauci was one of the principal architects of the
President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief which
has already been responsible for saving millions of
lives throughout the world. In 2015, Dr. Fauci
ranked as the 14th most highly cited researcher of all
time. Recognized with 43 honorary doctoral
degrees from universities in the United States and
abroad, Dr. Fauci is a member of the US National
Academy of Sciences and is the recipient of
numerous prestigious awards for his scientific and
global health accomplishments, including the
National Medal of Science, the Mary Woodard
Lasker Award for Public Service and the
Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Chivalry Award Presentation Ceremony
A Lifetime in Public Service: Researcher, Physician,
Administrator
At 7:15 p.m., the guests were called to the presentation ceremony of the Chivalry Award. Savoy Foundation Vice President Joseph Sciame welcomed the distinguished honoree and guests and introduced Event Chair and Foundation Board member Anthony Viscogliosi, who also welcomed the attendees and especially the evening’s honoree, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci.
In his remarks, Mr. Viscogliosi stated that “tonight we recognize a leader in the world in the field of healthcare who has been credited in saving millions of lives and has received the highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom, from the President of the United States, George W. Bush, for his leadership in the emergency plan for AIDS relief. This plan has saved more than eight million lives in the world. Dr. Fauci has been selected for the Chivalry Award for exemplifying the highest order of conduct.” Mr. Viscogliosi also welcomed Dr. Fauci’s colleague and wife, Dr. Christine Grady, also at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Chair of the Bioethics Committee of the NIH.
Mr. Viscogliosi then introduced Savoy Foundation President Marco Grassi who acknowledged the support of the guests in the audience and thanked all those who contributed to the success of the Gala, particularly the Grand Patrons, Patrons, Benefactors, Grand Sponsors and Sponsors listed in the evening’s printed program.
Additional remarks by Savoy Foundation Chairman of the Board Carl J. Morelli reiterated the historic purposes of the Savoy Orders and the Savoy Foundation’s charitable initiatives. Mr. Morelli stated that this year’s Chivalry Award honoree is the most appropriate recipient since this is the “first time the award is being given to someone who is related to the hospitaller spirit of the Savoy Orders whose Order of St. Lazarus established the equivalent of hospitals in the Middle East during the 1100s. He also exemplifies chivalry which is synonymous with achievement and having qualities that affirm those ideals of

early chivalry and knighthood: perseverance, dedication, protection of the sick, the poor and the weak.
Mr. Morelli reminded those assembled: “We have given this award to a former United States congressman, a media titan at MSNBC and Fox Network, we have given the award to a Vatican diplomat at the United Nations, and to a lady who espouses and promotes the arts. But, this is a wonderful occasion. For the first time, we are presenting the Chivalry Award to someone who is related to the hospitaller spirit that goes back a thousand years for our Savoy Orders. Consequentially, I merely want to say that Dr. Fauci, whose achievements were briefly but not fully mentioned because they are so great, that through his position at the NIH, he is a leader among his colleagues. So all of us here are incredibly honored to honor him tonight by conferring this award.”
“One of the facts that you may not be aware of is that among other honors, and I don’t know about whom else this can be said- I suppose a few people might qualify- Dr. Fauci has received 43 honorary doctorates. As a member of many professional societies and organizations and through his vital and heroic research, indeed he is the right person to receive this honor tonight. For this and many more reasons we are absolutely delighted to confer the 2016 Savoy Foundation Chivalry Award upon Dr. Anthony S. Fauci.”
In his gracious acceptance speech, Dr. Fauci commented that “this is truly a wonderful and very moving honor for me to receive the Chivalry Award from the Foundation of the Savoy Orders. This is the first time I have been in this room but I have passed this building a thousand times in my life. As others have said, I am a native New Yorker. I went to high school about 5 blocks from here, went to medical school about 15 blocks from here, I did my internship, residency and chief residency in medicine just a few blocks from here and my father lived a few blocks from here. I feel that I am kind of home and thank you for welcoming me at this wonderfully warm reception for me. I just want to say a couple of words that relate to just what was said and what has driven me to do what I do and why I feel so good about receiving this award tonight because the Foundation embodies the kinds of things that I have being doing with my life. The fact that you can support such diverse organizations from Doctors Without Borders with whom I had very intense experience for many years and recently together in
Page 9
Page 10
Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea during the Ebola outbreak there, where we were very much partnering together, to something like Casita Maria which is right here in the Bronx. This is a very wide range of causes supported by the organization and is very moving and quite touching.”
“My whole feeling about my life is that each of us somehow or other should feel some sort of moral responsibility for one another, that you don’t have to make it your profession or avocation but participate in some aspect of public service and I feel strongly this way. Just a week and half ago I gave a commencement address at Ohio State University where I made the point to the graduates that the responsibility that we have, particularly those of us living in a very rich country, relatively speaking, to share as best as we can in helping those in the world less fortunate.”
“It was mentioned by Anthony Viscogliosi that I received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for the work I did in establishing the plan for AIDS relief, but although I received that award, it made me very proud that the origin of that concept was actually from the President of the United States because George W. Bush, in the spring March of 2002, called me into his office and sent me and Secretary Tommy Thomson to several countries in sub-Saharan Africa and this was several years after we had just developed the lifesaving drugs for HIV. Maybe some of you don’t know the history of it but 1996 is when we developed the triple combination of drugs that changed AIDS from being a death sentence to essentially living a normal life and the resources to have available the lifesaving drugs. All of a sudden you have someone in their twenties who had a life expectancy of 5 – 8 months to someone to live another 50 years, which has actually happened. The President brought me into his oval office and said that he wanted to send us to Africa and figure out a program how we can, as Americans, help people in southern Africa and in the Caribbean because I feel, and these are his exact words: as a rich and endowed country we have a moral obligation to help those that are in dire straits and don’t have the capability to help themselves. And that is exactly how it started. I went there and spent a couple of weeks and the next 8 months putting together a program that turned out to be the emergency AIDS relief which is unquestionably the most important legacy of President Bush and that of the United States.”
Page 11
“As I go around in my travels, it is no secret that there is some hostility towards the ‘ugly American.’ If you go to southern Africa and you are an American, there is amazing affection and love and respect for that we have done as something as simple as providing lifesaving medication through the program so that is something not everybody is going to get involved in --something as dramatic as that --but each of us in our own lives should figure out a way to do it. The most recent event which is going on right now, the Ebola outbreak 2014-2015, which many people said ‘why are we worrying about what is happening in western Africa.’ Those who have not traveled there-New Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia- this is a very troubled part of the world. Very poor. They have suffered greatly through civil war and they had a double whammy of having a major epidemic. And, we have laid it on the line as a nation. President Obama asked for and got 5 billion dollars for the epidemic that would still be raging and we are facing it right now with the Zika virus about which you have been reading in the papers. I am flying back tomorrow morning because I have to help members of the Congress convince others why we need that money, in self-interest for ourselves and also to help others. So I am really trying to say that I am very grateful and honored by this award but it has a special meaning to me because it is given by an organization that stands for exactly what I have been trying to do all my life.”
