In the Library, Oct 2012, I thought I would follow up the demos we had in August with some books pertaining to the items turned. Fred Floyd turned meticulously glued up segmented pens. He referred to the DVD Pen Turning with Barry Gross as a great guide for beginning and advance pen making.

We also have Pens from the Wood Lathe in book form by Dick Sing. In this book he illustrates 12 different pen styles. Ask Fred about his re-sources for pen man- drels/ and or collets for preci-sion pen turning.

Jack Wayne turned a delicate stemmed goblet. in a matter of minutes.

Mike Cripps Turning Goblets illustrates both spindle and bowl turning techniques to create 8 different bowl and foot shapes. Remember you can add the captured rings to the goblets to create wedding gifts that are memorable.

The following recipe is from our librarian. It looks good Biz. Thanks! Bacon and Thyme Biscuits Compliments of P. Allen Smith

These are the flakiest, tastiest biscuits. Top with the savory honey ¼ c White sugar 14oz. buttermilk 8 oz. bacon 4 ½ c flour 3/4lb margarine ¼ c baking powder 2 tb. French Thyme . I used fresh and layered it with the bacon You could also add some cheddar cheese for a complete meal Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut raw bacon into ½ “ pieces. Place on baking sheet and cook in the 350 degree oven for 18-22 min. Bacon should be cooked through but not crisp. I micro waved it on paper towels for about 4 min. Turn the oven to 375 degree. Combine the dry ingredients and thyme in a mixing bowl. Whisk thoroughly. Cut the margarine into 1” cubes and add to flour mixture. Blend the margarine and flour mixture. The mixture will be coarse with bits of margarine showing. Add the buttermilk and stir until all is moistened. Do not over mix. Sprinkle flour on the work surface. Turnout mixture and roll into rectangle and ¾” thick. Fold the dough in half, bringing the short ends together. Turn half way and roll into rectangle again. Layer half the bacon on top. Repeat fold roll two more times, add the rest of the bacon and fold and roll two more times. With last roll, roll to ½” thick. Cut the dough with a 2 “or 3 “cutter. Bake for about 20 min. Can be frozen and baked frozen. The 3” size is great for making “Egg McBiscuit “ type breakfast sandwiches.

Info Needed One of the goals of the newsletter is to pass on information that might be relevant for turners, be they beginners or old hands. None of us is good enough that we can’t continue to learn, to enhance what we turn. To that end the club of-fers opportunities for members to watch many of the masters who visit us on day-long seminars, occasionally a full day of turning with them, Sawdust Sessions and the like. Another thing available are opportunities like those being offered by our member Bonnie Klein at Anderson Ranch or in Port Townsend. If you know of a member, or another other person presenting woodturning, even woodworking opportunities for members I would appreciated being told so we can alert membership in a timely manner. Looking forward to hearing from you.

VOLUNTEERTICKETSVOLUNTEERTICKETSVOLUNTEER Now that I have your attention, if you have not been turning in signed volun-teer tickets at each meeting that you volunteer services-set up, take down, bringing in wood for raffle, that sort of thing that helps make meetings smooth and com-fortable-you are missing out on some neat possibilities. At our Christmas meeting each year we draw names out of the can holding those tickets. When your name is drawn some sort of reward is given-wood, tools, things of this nature is awarded. It takes many people doing a lot of jobs to set up and run our meetings properly. This is an attempt for the club to say. “Thanks for the help.” Don’t miss out!

Christmas Party coming on December 13 Thursday, December 13 is the date for this year’s Christmas Party. Tradi-tionally we celebrate the season with a “Yankee-type” gift exchange, awarding of prizes to those who have helped the club in the previous year and a fine old shar-ing of holiday foods. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange bring an un-marked, wrapped woodturning, woodworking oriented gift (value usually less than $20,00) to exchange. It is always fun watching the machinations of members try-ing to set themselves up to win that one prize they see that they want to get. Also, if you wish to participate in the exchange, please remember that the orientation is to give something you as a woodturner might like to receive.
