American Art Therapy Association 2011- 2016 Strategic Plan Board Approved The American Art Therapy Association began the process of developing a long term Strategic Plan in the fall of 2010. The process began with the development of the strategic strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats as viewed by the membership in total, all Committees, Chapters and the Board. From that analysis three Core Program Goals were drafted and then fine tuned through Committee feedback to include: Grow a diverse, professional network of art therapists and other health care professionals worldwide with a shared knowledge of the effectiveness of art therapy as a healing profession. Build a well-known art therapy professional identity through which: art therapists are recognized and respected as effective health care professionals; art therapy is known as an effective research-based healing profession; and art therapy is recognized as a health necessity. Positively influence the ability of art therapists to build a rewarding career through outstanding education, research, career development, and networking opportunities. Using those goals each committee, many chapters and the National Office worked to create their programs for the next three to five years that would support the Core Program Goals. Goal 1 Continue to develop and grow the electronic exploratory phase of NL production, ensuring that we meet the diverse needs of the membership as technology continues to grow and change.

1. Distribute an electronic survey to members using survey monkey to gauge interest in a print on demand feature along with future topics to be presented 2. Tally survey responses 3. Utilize graphic artist to make electronic changes. 4. Alter NL format based on the majority of membership responses.

1. Continue to explore print on demand options through member surveys to gauge interest. If increased interest is presented, explore potential services. (Currently the recent survey results indicated a very small number of members were interested in printed copies.)

1. Continue to evaluate feedback from members in less formal formats. 2. Provide navigational tips within the context of the NL. 3. Continue to examine the frequency of print on demand requests, and based upon frequency consider a new readership survey to track changes from the survey completed in 2011)

1. Assess the cost/benefit of the print on demand service. 2. Seek out feedback from members regarding the print on demand service efficiency and frequency.

1. At the 5 year mark of our previous survey we plan to distribute another electronic survey to assess membership views at this time. Ensuring that new members are able to provide feedback and continued members can once again be heard.

Goal 2 Provide opportunities to expand our readership by compartmentalizing our news and harnessing it as a marketing tool within our outreach efforts.

1. Separate our Association news VS Professional news. 2. Examine how each section could read as separate publications.

1. Initiate a subscription service to non-members who may be interested in reading the art therapy feature articles and content.

1. Utilize the new format as a more effective advertising vehicle for the organization to increase exposure for art therapy (e.g. continue to grow and diversify ads).

1. Employ marketing efforts to other related professional disciplines (e.g. behavioral health, medical, educational). 2. Explore possible online NL link access and subscription information within other related association websites.

1. Support and encourage chapters to utilize these online resources in their outreach efforts by applying their co-branding.

Goal 3 Focus on Re-Branding our NL by creating new names for our Professional and Association news.

1. Conduct a survey of the membership to help create separate names for the Association and Professional news.

1. After re-branding officially takes place utilize website to make the two separate publications of the NL easily accessible to members and non-members.

1. Provide brief one time only complementary subscriptions for non-members to access Professional news from links on the website.

1. Monitor and assess the level of interest from non-members accessing the NL and how it is benefiting membership totals.

1. Examine the benefits of the outreach efforts. 2. Continue to assess accessibility and provide progressive professional content.

Goal 4 Strive to continually improve and transform our content by maintaining current technology advancements and employing them within the context of the news.

1. New technologies and mediums will be applied to the content to help enrich and invigorate the readers’ experience.

2. Links will be positioned in articles for readers to explore additional related resources such as videos.

1. Authors could offer Webinar presentations to present material and further enhance the application of the information. 2. Authors would be invited to convert their articles into online distance learning courses.

1. Assess other professional publications to be sure that we are utilizing our potential electronically and include any new resources found. 2. Continue to examine the navigation improvements and their accessibility.

1. Reach out to the membership through the NL format asking what they would like more information about or previous topics they would like to be converted to online distance learning courses.

1. Continue to include diverse and current art therapy information both professional and association based to meet the growing needs our profession.

In looking at the Newsletter’s 5-year strategic future, the following ideas are presented to continue the paradigm focus of expanding upon the Association-based news electronic format and target other professionals within related disciplines.
