Non-GPL Codec Solutions

• The following is a list of potential non-GPL codec options for the Au1200 processor:– http://www.free-codecs.com/– http://www.elecard.com/products/mpeg2decoder_sdk.shtml The Moonlight Elecard Decoder SDK, MS

windows only– http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Stinky_MPEG_2_Codec.htm Stinky's MPEG-2 Codec 1.2.0.79, MS

Windows– http://www.mainconcept.com/index_flash.shtml Main Concept AG has MPEG, H.264 encoders, may have

Linux decoders for licensing

• It appears many potential codecs are integrated already into players like Xine, Mplayer, etc for Linux (http://users.netwit.net.au/~pursang/video.html) while others remain GPL (VideoLan)

– Perhaps, there are few to none truly free or commercial codecs due to the lack of a large installed base of applications on Linux.

• http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/MSSG/ MPEG-2 source code apparently derived from the ISO standards by MSSG (the MPEG Software Simulation Group).

– From a read of the readme files, there appears to be no licensing stipulations other than a disclaimer of warranty (in the mpeg2dec.h file). Royalty is still due to MPEG-LA.

• http://www.mp3-tech.org/ under the Programmer's Corner link, contains a variety of source code for a few different audio (only) codecs including AAC, MPEG-2, and others.

– However, the licensing of this source code is unclear and may require an (exhaustive) search through each file of interest to determine if there are any GPL/LGPL links

AMD makes no claims to the quality or licensing restrictions for the codecs listed above. These are presented merely as potential options and it is up the user to follow all specified legal guidelines.

AMD makes no claims to the performance of the codecs either. None of the codecs listed above take advantage of the hardware acceleration built into the Au1200. If hardware acceleration is required, it would be left to the user to do so based on existing documentation.

Software JPEG Decode Solutions

JPEG typically refers to the ISO/IEC IS 10918-1 standard set by the Joint Photographic Experts Group http://www.jpeg.org/jpeg/index.html

Independent JPEG Group -http://www.ijg.org/– Open source implementation with modified BSD-style

licensing– De facto standard; Very widely deployed software solution– Incorporated by many companies’ photo editors and browsers– Provided with MontaVista Linux Pro 3.1 (not in the

PreviewKit)– Windows CE 5.0 includes a JPEG decoder in-the-box based on

this work - Windows CE 5.0 Copyright Information

Linux Support for the Au1200™ ProcessorAMD/MontaVista Customer Support Plan

• Linux development at both AMD and MontaVista has moved from 2.4 to 2.6

– AMD and MontaVista are working together as strategic partners during this transition

• Support for key mutual AMD/ MontaVista customers– Customers will license MVL Pro 3.1 (Linux 2.4)– AMD will provide Linux 2.6 kernel, drivers, codec, and documentation for use with

the MVL Pro 3.1 tools– AMD and MontaVista will provide joint support until MontaVista’s MVL 4.0 (Linux

2.6) release is available (September-October ’05)– At that time customers will transition (in a reasonable amount of time) to MVL 4.0

at no additional cost (license fee) and be supported solely by MontaVista

• Support for other customers– There will be no Linux 2.4 RC from AMD - archived Beta2 posting is the last– Customers using Linux 2.4 must use AMD Beta2 release and either will

develop on their own internally orapproach MontaVista for support

– Customers developing under Linux 2.6 must eitherComplete internally with AMD 2.6 release Wait till Sept-Oct ’05 and use the MontaVista Linux 2.6 release
