Lawnmower Racing!
This years racing will be held on Sunday, July 13th with time trials starting at 1:00pm and racing beginning at 2:00pm. Be sure to get there early as these races tend draw a rather large crowd.
Lawnmower racing is a motorsport in which com-petitors race m o d i f i e d , ride-on lawn-mowers. The original mo-tor is re-tained, but
the blades are removed for safety. The sport attracts all ages and is usually entered into in a spirit of fun rather than extreme competitiveness, though many do take it quite seriously.

Citizens of the Year/ Parade Grand Marshalls Bill & Lynn Poteet
2014’s Citizens of the Year, Bill and Lynn Poteet have lived and served in our community for over 40 years. In that time they raised two sons, Michael and Jonathan, volun-teered on the Territorial Day’s Committee, served as mem-bers of the Lion’s club, worked in the local school system, and ran Poteet’s Garden Shop and Nursery.
They have always been willing to lend a hand whenever needed and demonstrated a generosity of spirit that has been constant. Bill was born in Wright City, Oklahoma in 1939, the young-est of eight children. Upon finishing high school, he joined the army. After peeling thousands of potatoes, Bill left the army and moved to Washington State. Lynn was born in San Francisco, California in 1944, one of four children. When she was very young, her family moved to the Olym-pic Peninsula. Lynn finished high school and went to work at Kalaloch Lodge where she met Bill. They married and had two sons. In 1973, Bill was working for Washington State Department of Corrections as a food manager and was transferred to the low security Larch Mountain Honor Camp. They purchased seven acres from Jerry and Dottie Johnson in the Amboy/Yacolt area where they would make their home for the next 40 years. Preceding official involvement with Territorial Days, on a whim, Lynn decided to try her hand at axe throwing. Lynn won the women’s axe throw at the 1973 Territorial Days Celebration and her prize was delivered to her by Virgil Wallace. Virgil must have been impressed because a few years later Lynn worked with him as a faller’s assistant, car-rying saws, sharpening chains and sometimes bucking logs. In the early 1980s, Lynn went back to school and re-ceived her associate’s degree and went to work for Am-boy Grade School as special education teacher’s assis-tant.
For 12 years, Lynn helped young students learn to read, write and build their confidence in math. Bill and Lynn opened Poteet’s Garden Shop and Nursery in 1983 doing mostly wholesale business and selling plants at the Amboy Market in cooperation with Len Williams. Over the next 28 years, the business grew from a small seasonal shop to a full services nursery with bark delivery, flowers, trees and shrubs. As a community based business, Lynn and Bill always helped out where they could, donating flowers, supplies and bark dust to many local organiza-tions. Poteet’s annual sales became a community favorite with great deals on plants, free hot dogs and lots of visit-ing. By 1984, Bill and Lynn had become active members of the Territorial Days committee. Lynn headed up several com-mittees at one time or another, including entertainment, parade and parking. Additionally, she was tapped to serve as Secretary and became the first woman chair-man. During her tenure as chairman, the official board was created to oversee and protect the only community-owned park in the state.

It was during this period that an additional five acres of land were added to the park that would serve as the lo-cation for the Carnival and extra parking. Adding their support as community business owners, Bill and Lynn en-tered the Parade with beautiful displays of flowers and blooming shrubs. Bill was a familiar sight during the yearly celebration, assisting with parking as a Lions Club mem-ber.
Bill has given over 30 years of service as an active mem-ber of the North Clark Lion’s Club. Through these many years Bill was happy to serve as an officer in the club, holding positions as President, Vice President and Secre-tary. Always ready to help, Bill was involved in the Easter Egg Hunt, Mother’s Day Breakfast, and Christmas Baskets. Lynn has been a member of the Lions for several years. In 2011, Bill and Lynn decided to officially retire so that
they could do a little traveling, spend more time with their two grandchildren (Sean and Kelly) and relax a little bit. After years of providing the plants and wares for others to cultivate, they are now enjoying time in their own garden. Bill and Lynn continue to be involved with community events and provide help whenever needed. Additionally, they are enjoying the RV lifestyle with their two dogs, Petey and Freckles. They have taken trips across the coun-try and spent time in the sun. However, the Amboy/Yacolt area will always be home. Written by: Michael Poteet

Close Encounters of the Amboy Kind Nearly every morning they walk through town, over there, on the side of the road. Have you seen them? They're an inspirational part of our town family, quietly doing a job that we mostly ignore – picking up litter. Best of all, they are always smiling, especially when you give them a little
wave. Terri Dyer, Inez Dick-son, Diane Harmon, Dianne Armstrong a n d g r a n d -daughter Shalyla, and Marcella Lang-ford. Our own troop of Amboy Angels, keeping our roads and park just a bit cleaner, a little more presentable for the rest of us.
Aren't these ladies showing us genuine heart and caring? You agree? The next time you see them, won't you give them a nod and a smile, a close encounter of the thankful kind. Fire Mountain Hair Salon

2014 BULL OF THE WOODS ROY ASCHOFF
The 2014 Amboy Log Show Bull of the Woods is Roy Aschoff. Roy’s logging career began right out of high school in August of 1962, for the International Paper Company. Back in those days, usually around Thanksgiving, logging operations in higher eleva-tions became overcome with snow and crews would be laid off for the winter. This happened to Roy and having been so new with the company he did not have enough hours in to collect unemployment. He found that there was an opening to work at the Chelatchie Mill so he promptly went to work there and also filled in at the IP operations in Vaughn, Oregon until returning to Woodland in February of 1963.
Roy’s father was a log truck driver for Ben Thomas Logging of Woodland, WA. Roy went for a ride along with his father to learn the ropes of log truck driving. While on a ride along with his dad, Ben Thomas’s superintendent saw Roy and offered him a job in the rigging. He worked there for a short time, leaving in 1964. He then went to work for C.H. Anry’s Logging. Shortly thereafter he was offered a job on the cutting crew for Wilson & Sutton Log-ging. He worked for three years under Burke Sawyer, who was the Bull Buck at the time, learning many valuable skills along the way. He left the cutting crew in 1969 to take on a new opportu-nity to tend hook on one of Wilson & Sutton’s yarder sides, re-maining in that position until the winter layoff of 1971.
Ben Thomas Logging needed a Side Rod for one of their yarder sides. So Roy, who was always looking for a new challenge/opportunity decided to take that job and once again Roy went to work for Ben Thomas Logging. During this time, Roy worked
18
side by side with the USFS Sales Administrator, Ron Wilcox. Ron transferred to Durango Colorado in 1972 to run the timber sales program for the Durango Ranger District. In Cortez Colorado, there was a large timber company called Southwest Forest Prod-
ucts, that had purchased a large USFS sale consisting of mostly cable logging. The company was in need of a superintendent and sales administrator. Ron Wilcox recommended that they track down Roy Aschoff. Dan Jones with Southwest Forest Products called upon Roy in 1973 and offered him that very job. Roy took that position and moved to Cortez Colorado. Remain-ing there for three years, until the environmental pressure to stop logging on USFS land ended the South-west Forest Products con-tract with the Forest Ser-vice, which left Roy without a job.

Roy operating a BU-20 Skagit that was owned by Ben Thomas & used for road changes for the BU-199. The BU-20 is now owned by Dick Colf. Continued on next Page
Roy packed up his young family and moved to Kamiah, Idaho in April of 1976 to take a job for Potlatch Industries. He looked after two of their yarder sides until the winter of 1978. That is when Roy decided to once again return to Woodland and he resumed working for Ben Thomas in March of 1979, looking after their slack-line logging. The Logging Superintendent, Bob Koplan, needed to take some time off to recover from an injury and Roy was asked to fill in for him until he could return to work. Roy had worked in this position for one month, when Bob Koplan decided to retire for good and Roy agreed to take over the Logging Su-perintendent position. He remained there for two years until Jen-sen & Grove offered Roy a job with better pay. Roy took their offer and worked there until 1983. Then, once again, Roy re-turned to work for Ben Thomas as their Logging Superintendent, working there until August of 1985.
He spent a few years filling in for many local logging companies before making the decision as some talented loggers will do…to start a business of his own with another local well known hook tender, John Schmit. They bought their own yarder and logged for several years until the economic crunch of the late 80’s hit and they ended their logging operations in 1987.
In the fall of 1987, Roy returned to Ben Thomas Logging, again, to take the job of logging su-perintendent. In April of 1988, due to the Forest Service de-creasing the size of timber sales, Ben Thomas sold his BU199 Skagit. This was Skagit’s largest yarder produced, with a total of only seven machines ever built. This machine was sold to a man in Australia and one of the conditions of the sale, was that Ben Thomas had to send someone with the ma-chine to put it together and show them how to run it. So they sent Roy with the machine to Australia. The new owner of the yarder, Glen Northrup, took
a liking to Roy and his extensive background and experience in line logging and asked Roy if he was interested in moving to Aus-tralia.Once again, always looking for a new adventure, Roy took Mr. Northrup up on his offer. So off to Burnie Tasmania Australia they went and stayed there for two years. Roy returned to Woodland in 1991 discovering that things had become much worse in the two years that he had been gone from the US log-ging industry. And for the first time in years Roy was not able to easily find a job. But after a few phone calls and a little time, Roy loaded up and left the Pacific Northwest, headed for Alaska. Roy took a job as the side rod for the Ketchikan Pulp Company. Roy said he loved Alaska and enjoyed the job, so much that he worked seven days a week. He said he would have worked eight or nine days a week if it was possible. Roy stayed with the Ketchikan Pulp Company until their operations were winding down due to environmental pressure and the lack of USFS tim-ber. He then returned to Battle Ground in the spring of 1994.
In the meantime, Ben Thomas had left Woodland and moved their logging operations to Alaska. At this time, Roy once again, returned to Ben Thomas to work for their operations on Kodiak Island. Roy worked for many different operations in Alaska, doing many different jobs. Roy and John Schmit ended up working together again in 1996. This is when Roy went back to cutting timber at the young age of 53. Roy worked on the cutting crew until the spring of 1998, when the Bull Buck retired, and Roy took over his position. He remained the Bull Buck until 1999 when Ben Thomas wrapped up that operation and Roy & Donna returned to Woodland in 1999.
19
At that time Roy decided to go on a new adventure and pur-chased a used log truck and continued with that until 2002, selling the log truck and pack-ing up to move to Reno NV in 2003. There he went to work on a rock crushing crew doing “a little bit of everything.” Then in 2005, the company that Roy was working for got a contract for a job near Anchorage. So once again, Roy was off to work in Alaska. After complet-ing that project, Roy & Donna returned to Reno NV and Roy went back to working on the rock crushing crew and driving belly dump trucks until the time
he retired in 2008. However, retirement didn’t last long! Roy is living in Sparks NV and is still keeping busy, loading decorative rock and visiting with people.
Every talented logger has a few folks that showed them some valuable skills that are used throughout life. Roy was fortunate to have worked with and learned from many during his extensive career in the logging industry. Some of these folks would be Tim Simonds, who was a hook tender for Clarence Anrys (C.H. Anrys Logging), he taught Roy the art of long splicing over the course of two Sundays! Clarence Downing taught Roy how to splice eyes in two or three different ways. Dave Thomas, Ben Thomas’s youngest brother, was always a good source of advice for him to fall back on as a young side rod. And Burke Sawyer, was well known as one of the best timber fallers in the area and men-tored Roy on timber falling, when he was on the cutting crew and Burke was Bull Buck for Wilson & Sutton.
