January saw the premiere of Before The Barns,

a performing arts class series held prior to

performances. Students of all ages learned from

experts in Djembe drumming, Indian and salsa dance,

and honed their improv skills at a workshop led by

members of The Second City.

After 39 years, Ann McKee, Wolf Trap’s Senior

Vice President, Performing Arts and Education,

retired in January 2014. In commemoration of Ann’s

tremendous career and her unwavering dedication

throughout her Wolf Trap tenure, the Foundation

established the Ann McKee Fund for Opera.

The endowed fund will provide an enduring source

of support for Wolf Trap Opera and help ensure its

ongoing legacy of excellence.

Foundation staff, friends, and family gathered to honor Ann at a retirement celebration at The Barns. Ann (left) enjoys the event

januaryAmbition, growth, creativity, collaboration, and connection are themes that illustrate the year 2014 for Wolf Trap Foundation. From a refreshed new

look to innovative programming, we are taking to heart our mission to present and create

excellent and innovative performing arts programs for the enrichment, education, and

enjoyment of diverse audiences and participants.

We welcomed close to half a million people to the Filene Center, Children’s Theatre in-

the-Woods, and our intimate Barns during 2014. The summer’s beautiful weather made

for a magical backdrop for audiences to take in a variety of pop, rock, classical, jazz,

country, and R&B music, as well as comedy, opera, musical theatre, and dance offerings.

Behind the scenes, Wolf Trap’s professional teaching artists enriched the lives of our

youngest learners through groundbreaking education programs in the D.C. region and

across the country.

The passion and generous support of Wolf Trap Foundation’s donors and patrons

drive us to do more and do it better. Thank you for your enthusiasm as we steward this

exciting work for you and our community.

We pledge to continue our work lifting the human spirit through music, dance, and

the splendor of the many performing arts and education programs we offer. In the

meantime, please enjoy this 2014 report. We look forward to seeing you at Wolf Trap soon.

Sincerely,

From February through May, more than

2,700 children and their teachers attended

performances of the new Wolf Trap

commission Journey with Jazz, presented by

the Wolf Trap Jazz Trio (above) at the

Center for Education.A relaxed yet refined evening was in order for the sixth

annual Wine at Wolf Trap. Hosted at The Barns, guests

came together to enjoy a five course meal with fine wine

pairings, dancing to the Olivera Quintet, and a silent

auction, raising more than $71,000 for the Foundation’s

renowned arts and education programs.

Wolf Trap’s 2014 Legacy Circle Dinner at the Center for Education

included a presentation by the Lake Braddock Secondary School

Quartet from Burke, Virginia, under the leadership of Orchestra

Director Elizabeth Reed. Reed was among six local public school

educators who received a 2013–2014 Wolf Trap Grant for High

School Performing Arts Teachers. Wolf Trap’s Legacy Circle

members are securing the Foundation’s arts and education

programs through future estate gifts.

Wolf Trap’s Internship Program skyrocketed,

receiving 1,800 applications from 796 students

from Fall 2013 to Spring 2014. From this group,

43 students were brought on board for paid

internships, receiving hands-on professional

experience, mentoring, and networking oppor-

tunities to help advance their careers.

Wolf Trap successfully completed its Artistic Excellence Challenge to raise $1,000,000 towards the Endowment, which was matched by

a $500,000 gift by an anonymous donor. Many gifts were made to the Terre and Polly Jones Endowed Fund for Artistic Initiatives and to

the new Ann McKee Fund for Opera.

$1 million goal reached!

Spring arrived and so did Wolf Trap’s new look and

feel. With a streamlined, bold new logo, modern

graphics, and high-energy colors, the Foundation’s

visual revamp is featured on advertising, print and

electronic materials, the website, and buses and

Metro shelters throughout the D.C.-metro area.

When Disney’s Beauty and the Beast hit the stage this summer, Wolf Trap, along with The Boeing Company and USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore, invited military personnel and their families to “be our guest” and receive complimentary tickets to the enchanted musical.

Summer 2014 was a resounding success with 43 debut

artists and 13 sold-out shows at the Filene Center, including

Ringo Starr, Daryl Hall & John Oates, The Philadelphia

Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma with the National Symphony

Orchestra, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Sara Bareilles,

Darius Rucker, Jim Gaffigan, and more.

Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods welcomed 19,000 guests of its own—

5,426 of whom received free public service tickets that Wolf Trap

Foundation distributed to 25 nonprofit organizations throughout the D.C. area.

The charming little venue, with newly-refurbished seating, featured 33 performances

this year, with 14 debuts.

june

Bringing Carmen to the Filene Center stage was no small

feat, but Wolf Trap Opera’s young artists, interns, staff,

The Washington Chorus, and the National Symphony

Orchestra joined forces to showcase what became the

largest single-night audience for a Wolf Trap Opera perfor-

mance in over a decade. This production was made possible

in part through generous philanthropic support from Wolf Trap

Foundation Board Chairman Dan D’Aniello and his wife, Gayle,

as well as from Ed and Andy Smith.

For their only 2014 D.C.-area appearance, The Philadelphia

Orchestra returned to the Filene Center for the first time since

1999. In honor of the 30th anniversary of the rebuilt Filene Center,

the orchestra collaborated with Wolf Trap Opera to perform

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Special thanks to performance sponsors,

Deborah F. and David A. Winston.

july

Internationally renowned bass-baritone Eric Owens (right) returned as Wolf Trap Opera’s (WTO) first Artist in Residence,

made possible by the Lincoln and Therese Filene Foundation. An alumnus of WTO, Owens spent the 2014 season working

with this year’s young artists, and hosted an artists’ round-table with notable opera professionals, including

Michelle DeYoung, Joshua Winograde, William Berger (left), and Eric Einhorn.

Page 5: ambition growth creativity collaboration connection

Spreading innovation abroad, the Wolf Trap Institute traveled to Singapore to provide professional development training to 300 preschool educators, teaching artists, and arts specialists on ways to integrate the arts into classroom instruction.

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chair Jane Chu (top, center) and NEA Director of Arts Education Ananna Hudson (top, second from left) visited Brightwood Elementary School to observe Wolf Trap’s Early STEM/Arts program in action.

The 2014 Filene Center Summer Season was nothing short of phenomenal.

Wolf Trap Foundation provided affordable access for hundreds of thousands of

people of all ages to a wide variety of live performances spanning genre, style,

and discipline. Highlights included Wolf Trap debuts of Lionel Richie, Boston,

Darius Rucker, Robyn + Röyksopp, Jim Gaffigan, Prince Royce, The Fray, Sara Bareilles,

Jennifer Nettles, The Band Perry, as well as Wolf Trap favorites Diana Ross, Gipsy Kings,

Josh Groban, Wynton Marsalis, Heart, Sarah McLachlan, Yanni, Counting Crows, and

Crosby, Stills & Nash, among others.

Face of America™, Wolf Trap’s original series

combining music, dance, film, and the beauty

of America’s National Parks, featured debuts

of Band of Horses, Oregon Ballet Theatre, and

Pacific Northwest Ballet Theatre, as well as the

world premiere of a multidisciplinary

commission, Dirty Goods, performed by

Pacific Northwest Ballet and set to the music of

The Chromatics.

The spectacular stage at the Filene Center was the site of the annual

Wolf Trap Ball on September 13. Co-chaired by board members

Tim Keating and General (Ret.) Lester L. Lyles, the event raised more

than $1.1 million (a record amount) for the Foundation’s arts and

education programs. The event also celebrated the Embassy of the

United Arab Emirates and welcomed His Excellency Youself Al Otaiba,

Ambassador, and Mrs. Abeer Al Otaiba, honorary hosts for the evening.

Among the VIP guests were Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and First

Lady Dorothy McAuliffe, United States Senators Mark Warner and

Rand Paul, and Congressmen Jim Moran and Steve Stockman.

Continuing into the fall, The Barns at

Wolf Trap offered exciting programming

with an array of artists gracing the inti-

mate stage, including Brandi Carlile,

Justin Hayward, and Kathy Mattea.

Wolf Trap received results of a four-year, independent study showing

that, because of Wolf Trap’s Early STEM/Arts education program,

children are doing better in math. Researchers also affirmed the

quality and validity of Wolf Trap’s teacher training, and showed that

the program enhances teacher practice. Funded by a major grant

from the U.S. Department of Education, the research confirms that

Wolf Trap’s arts-integrated model is an effective teaching and

learning strategy.

Making spirits bright since 1968, Wolf Trap’s

Holiday Sing-A-Long, a free event for the

community, featured “The President’s Own” United

States Marine Band, 13 local vocal groups, and a

Toys for Tots collection. Christmas carols, Hanukkah

songs, and special guests Frosty, Rudolph, and

Santa made the afternoon memorable.
