Being a Good Neighbour #2– Antisocial Behaviour

Look at the scenarios below and tick which you think are acts of antisocial behaviour…

Greg has moved onto an estate. He has never met anyone yet but his neighbours have left some welcome gifts on his doorstep. He finds this strange as has never spoken to anyone and likes to keep himself to himself.

Parvinder and her children move to a new street. She wears a hijab and some neighbours have taken offence to this and told her she shouldn’t wear this as they feel threatened due to recent acts of terrorism.

Marco and Jill are dog lovers. They let their dogs out all hours of the days and night and don’t pick up after them when they foul. The dogs also bark all the time and cause distress to some children as they are off their leads and are large dogs.

Terry is a single parent of three girls. The girls are teenagers and like to play music quite loud at weekends; however Terry insists they turn it off by 8pm or earlier if anyone complains.

Dez is a popular guy on his estate and helps out with people’s cars as he’s a trained mechanic. He does most of this work on his front and back lawns but this distresses his next-door neighbours, Tom and Marilyn, as they find his gardens an eye-sore. They have tried talking to him but he becomes abusive and the other neighbours also get involved.

A group of teenagers hang around on wasteland where no-one ever goes, including the police. It’s a mess there so the teenagers use graffiti as they say it brightens up the area and allows them a place to go where elderly people won’t be intimidated.

Being a Good Neighbour #3– Party Central

What do you think you could do to keep your property safe?

If you did have a party, what do you think the consequences could be?

If you found damages in your house following a party, what would you do?

What would you do if you were asking unwanted visitors to leave but they refused?

What would you do if a neighbour of yours was having a party that was getting out of hand?

Being a Good Neighbour #4 – Visitors and Noise

Noise

Noise from neighbour’s, especially in converted flats, is one of the most common forms of nuisance. However, everyone can alleviate the problem by being considerate and keeping unnecessary noise to a minimum, especially early in the morning and late at night.

If you’re being disturbed by noise from a neighbour, there are many things you can do:

· Talk with your neighbour. They may not be aware that they are disturbing you and will usually be happy to minimise noise.

· If this approach fails, you can make a complaint to your local authority’s Environmental Health Department. Environmental Health Officers have the power to deal with specific noise nuisances, and in some circumstances can take court action.

· Speak to your Housing Officer. They will contact the other tenants and try to resolve the problem.

· In serious or persistent cases, the landlord may resort to legal proceedings to stop the nuisance.

What other things do you think you would need to report to your Landlord/Housing Officer about your neighbours?

Being a Good Neighbour #5 – Take Action

Record below what action you would take in the following scenarios…

An elderly lady who lives alone has slipped outside of her home and cut her leg quite badly. She’s said she feels faint.

A group of teenagers have their music (with inappropriate language) on really loudly and there are small children playing next door.

A neighbour who is a single mother is struggling up a hill with several bags of shopping.

An elderly man next door complains to you that your garden is unruly and wants you to cut the grass and tidy it up.
