Amazon River and Rainforest

Amazon River

• The Amazon River is the second largest river in the world.

• However, the Amazon is by far the widest river in the world.

• The Amazon produces about twenty percent of all the water in the world’s rivers that pour into the ocean on its own.

Amazon River-Animals• Piranha- There are twenty different species of

piranhas in the Amazon, but nearly all of them are vegetarian.

• Manatee- Manatees' are the Amazon's largest marine mammal.

• Tucuxi and the Boto Dolphin- These are the only river dolphins left in the world, and are considered the most spectacular sight in the Amazon River.

Amazon River-Plant Life• Curare is a liana vine that cures many diseases.• Periwinkle is an active ingredient that grows

in/near the Amazon River, that has powerful cancer fighting effects that has increased the survival rate for childhood leukemia.

• There are many more types of plant life that is undiscovered, all in different colors, shapes and sizes.

Amazon River Facts

• There are no bridges that crosses the Amazon throughout the whole river.

• The Amazon runs for 6,437 kilometers (4,000 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean to its headwaters in the Andes Mountains of Peru.

• The Amazon River and its tributaries flow through Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, and Brazil.

Amazon Rainforest

• The Amazon Rainforest had once covered fourteen percent of the Earth’s land surface, now only covers six percent.

• One and a half acres of rainforest are lost every second.

• There were about five million Indians living in the Amazonian Rainforest five centuries ago now there are less than two hundred thousand.

Amazon Rainforest-Animals• Sloth- Rarely climb down from the trees they

are in, have huge hooked claws and long arms.• Giant Anteater- Armed with a two foot long

tongue, can eat ants and termites very fast.• Golden Lion Tamarin- Eats fruits, insects,

spiders, lizards and more.

Amazon Rainforest-Plant Life• Has sometimes been described as the “Lungs of

our planet”.• About twenty percent of the Earth’s oxygen is

produced by the Amazon Rainforest.• Nearly half of the Rainforest has been

destroyed.• There are about 40,000 species of plants in the

Amazon Rainforest.
