Upcoming events in the Village of Rosemont

Dec‘09

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Village of Rosemont, I am happy to wish you a holiday season that is rich in good times, special relations and joyful shared experiences.

The holidays have been celebrated through-out our nation’s history.

When America was young, our earliest presidents didn’t have electric light and blown glass for decorations. Their families and staffs used decorations provided by nature -- green-ery, owers, nuts, berries and the like.

Today, we have multi-story displays in shop-ping malls, LED lights that aren’t just conve-niently electrical, but are energy saving, and the White House has boasted a bevy of decora-tions in recent years, from antique sleighs to more than 25 trees, decorated with ornaments from every state.

Here in Rosemont, our residents continue to mount lavish displays in their front yards, beckoning visitors. Of course, our large public light displays, especially the one on Higgins Road and Scott Street that features Santa Claus and a petting zoo, remains a favorite.

Since hospitality is our middle name, we hope you will have a chance to spend part of your holiday celebration in Rosemont. We guarantee you will nd great value at various price points, from shopping in Rosemont Marketplace, to dining in our award-winning restaurants or our premier hotels. You also will see some excellent of-fers for New Year’s Eve plans in this issue of Amazing Rosemont, too.

Whatever your arrangements, we are ready to serve you and hope we have the opportunity to do so soon. That willing-ness to serve is precisely why Rosemont writes the chapter on success each year in metropolitan Chicago’s book on business. Thanks to great service and commitment, the Stephens Center and Rosemont are welcoming previous business back to Rose-mont, and new business, as well. Check out Chris Stephens’ column in this issue for more details.

We commend Rosemont’s vibrant busi-ness community and thank all the employ-ees at the Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center, the Rosemont The-atre, the Allstate Arena and the Village of Rosemont, for keeping Rosemont a premier destination.

Happy holidays and a healthy, prosper-ous New Year’s.

Rosemont: Home for the holidaysDear Friends,

Happy holidays from everyone at the Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center.

As you may have noticed, convention centers are making headlines across the nation, due to the unfortunate number of conventions and tradeshows that have been moving or canceling. But not so at the Stephens Center.

There’s great news on Rosemont’s horizon: We have at least two major shows returning plus the addition of a new show, which all translates into a hearty celebration this New Year’s.

We are delighted to announce that the Hal-loween Costume & Party show is returning to the Ste-phens Center, February 26-March 1. Also, after spend-ing a year in Orlando, our good friends at the Craft and Hobby Association are bringing back the annual CHA Summer Trade Show, from Tuesday, July 27 through Thursday, July 29, followed by the CHA Craft Super-Show consumer event from Friday, July 30 to Saturday, July 31, 2010.

We welcome back those shows, in addition to greeting our new friends, O’Reilly Auto Parts World of Wheels -- the Muscle Car show -- that will be zooming up to our doors March 5 – 7, 2010.

I send personal thanks and congratulations to three special groups of people who have worked incredibly hard, employing their best efforts and smartest think-ing in all that they do so that Rosemont remains a most enticing location for meetings, conventions, tradeshows, as well as for all kinds of visitors:

The employees of the Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center for their dedication, their good spirit and their marvelous ability to stick together;

All the employees of the Village of Rosemont, whose loyalty and hard work is re ected daily and hourly in the excellent service they provide.

To the business owners and all employees of Rose-mont-based companies and/or divisions, especially our hotels and restaurants, but also every organization, from the family-owned local shop down the street to large multi-national corporations, thank you.

Thanks to all these committed persevering souls, who have worked individually and together to make Rose-mont renowned for its top level of service, the Stephens Center and Rosemont continue to celebrate success.

These wins not only put us in the singular position of having the highest return rate of any convention center in the nation; they are the evidence of the successful integration of each staff member, tradesperson, execu-tive and consultant who works at the Stephens Center.

Without such coordination and planning, we would never be able to point to the success we have and will continue to experience in the coming year.

There is more than team spirit involved in this kind of success. The relationships are deeper and wider of even those on a championship team. Our internal network is more like a large productive family. And it is particularly appropriate to think of ourselves as an employee family, at this most family-oriented time of year.

It is with the greatest respect and privilege that I wish you – on behalf of our entire family of em-ployees at the Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center, as well from my own family – a

very blessed holiday season and a happy prosperous New Year.

Best wishes,

Christopher R. StephensGeneral ManagerDonald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center

Getaway ideas for families, right here in Rosemont

‘Staycation’ destination

Continued on page 6 >>

Part of Rosemont’s holiday traditions include attending the village’s tree lighting ceremony, petting zoo and decorated park at Scott Street and Higgins Road. (Journal Photo)

The auto clubs are telling us that most Americans are driving to and from their holiday celebrations this season. That fact indi-

cates that the vacation trend rst identi ed in the summer of 2008, and more widely embraced this past summer, is remaining popular. The “stay-cation” (a vacation where an individual, family or group stays at home or close to home) has another advantage: It places the travelers in propinquity, making it easy for them to spend more time together than they might otherwise spend at home. We often read the opinions of child psychologists who tell us in the popular press that we should be spending more time with our children. There’s nothing more valuable to a child than a parent’s time and attention, and no better setting in which to give children that con-sideration than the stay-cation.

Suggestions for couples’ weekend getaways to Rosemont have been described in this section in previous editions. There are just as many, if not more, package deals, sports and entertainment op-tions available to families, making Rosemont the ultimate destina-tion for a family’s stay-cation.

Value-packed hotel bargains abound in Rosemont during the holiday season. Those deals, coupled with all the family entertain-

<< Continued from page 5ment Rosemont offers at the Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center, the Allstate Arena and the Rosemont Theatre, make for a fantastic stay-cation for any family, even those who are coming from more far- ung locations.

For example, our friends, Jim and Mary Stewart from Addison, are keeping toy and game gifts to a minimum this year, in lieu of spending a fun- lled weekend at the Crowne Plaza, 5440 River Road, in Rosemont, where their children will be front and center, but where Jim and Mary will get some time to themselves, too.

“When my son is 25, he won’t remember what we gave him for his 10th Christmas,” Jim explained. “But he certainly will recall the fun we had that holiday during our little weekend in Rosemont.”

The Stewarts are bringing their children, Jim, Jr., age 10, and Katie, age 7, along with the most impor-tant member of the family -- Annie -- the three-year-old German shepherd. The family has visited www.rosemont.com and has made their plans. They will check-in on Friday afternoon, December 11th, when Annie will be presented with her own pet toy/treat as part of the hotel’s pet-friendly package that includes:

Accommodations for two in a brand new guest room, the Sleep Advantage Program (seven layers of comfort bedding and upgraded amenities);

Crowne Plaza Bath Program (luxurious bath linens and multi-dash setting shower head);

the pet toy/treat at check-in;water/food bowl (for use during stay); map to local dog parks; two bottles of water (at

check-in).Jimmy and Katie are energetic swimmers and Mary

expects they’ll race each other down to the Crowne Plaza’s expansive indoor swimming pool. After they are thoroughly exhausted from their water recreation, they will return to their brand new rooms where the whole family will take advantage of the pizza delivery package, including delivery of one large, two-topping pizza from the River Rock Cafe.

On Saturday morning, they are all looking forward to some holiday shopping at the expansive gift dis-plays at the International Gem and Jewelry Show, in the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, right across the street from their hotel. Jim plans to visit the jewelry show with Mary, where they will take turns splitting up so that everyone gets a chance to buy a surprise for the others (Katie prides herself on how well she keeps secrets!) Jim plans on secretly making a special purchase of a pair of 14k gold ear-rings to present to Mary on their 15th wedding anni-versary, right after Christmas.

They will grab a quick lunch at the hotel, before Mary and Katie walk just a block down to the Rose-

‘Staycation’ destination mont Theatre, for the 1:00 pm “Barbie at the Symphony Show,” where every American girl’s favorite doll is per-forming with a live symphony orchestra. The boys will bring Annie along when they return to the Stephens Center for the Skokie Valley Kennel Club show. By Sat-urday night, the family will reunite in Crowne Plaza’s tness center and pool for some quality time working out and relaxing, before heading off for dinner and a movie at metropolitan Chicago’s most luxurious megaplex, Muvico Rosemont.

On Sunday morning, the family will take it easy, and walk just two blocks across the street to the Hyatt Re-gency O’Hare’s new O’H American Grill for a late break-fast. In the afternoon, Jim and Jimmy will grab a cab for a short ride across town to catch a sports event at the Allstate Arena, while the girls attend the one-day-only performance of the great Moscow Ballet company, who will perform the complete Russian version of Tchaik-ovsky’s Nutcracker Suite at 3:00 p.m. at the Rosemont Theatre.

After another busy, but fun- lled day, it will be time for the boys to rule, when the whole family will kick back over burgers at the Ram sports bar and restaurant.

The icing on the cake is an evening walk with Annie around the village to see Rosemont’s gigantic holiday light displays.

Idyllic, you say? While this family may be a little to Rockwellian, any family will have plenty to see and do in Rosemont, no matter how divergent their interests.

By the time the Stewarts check out on Monday morn-ing, the family will likely be exhausted from having so much fun, being so active and making so many memo-ries.

The Craft & Hobby Associa-tion (CHA) has announced

that the CHA 2010 Summer Convention & Trade Show and the CHA Craft SuperShow will return to the Donald E. Ste-phens Convention and Confer-ence Center in Rosemont after one season in Orlando, Fla.

The annual CHA Summer Trade Show will be held from Tuesday, July 27 through Thursday, July 29, followed by the CHA Craft SuperShow con-sumer event from Friday, July 30 to Saturday, July 31, 2010.

“We are so glad to have CHA back home in Rosemont,” ex-plained Christopher R. Ste-phens, general manager, Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center. “We look forward to working with CHA and its members to rejuvenate and revitalize the Summer Show and are also very excited to help promote the new Craft SuperShow to the crafters of the greater Chicagoland area.”

For more than 30 years Rose-mont has hosted the annual CHA Summer Show creating a friendly and familiar venue for CHA and its members. Like many other trade shows, CHA recently faced declines in both trade show attendees and exhibitors due to the sagging economy. After trying several different marketing programs to revive the Show in Rosemont, CHA relocated the Summer

Show to the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, and launched the CHA Craft SuperShow consumer event in 2009 in efforts to reverse this trend, grow the show, and ex-pand the industry.

The CHA 2009 Summer Show in Orlando attracted about 5,000 trade show attendees with a 5% increase in the number of attending retailers over 2008. Summer Show exhibitors came from 49 different states and Puerto Rico, as well as interna-tionally from countries across South America, Europe, and Africa. Additionally, there were over 50 new exhibitors at the Summer Show. Many who par-ticipated felt it was a successful venture despite the recession.

Following the Summer Show, CHA staff started to solicit feed-back from exhibitors and the general membership about the experience in Orlando. Based on post-show CHA Summer exhibi-tor surveys, 50% of respondents preferred Rosemont to Orlando while the other 50% were split among several other venues. CHA hosted several member conference calls in which mem-bers commented about a desire to return to Rosemont. Member emails about returning to Rose-mont were also sent to CHA staff which drove further discus-sions on the topic of venue selec-tion for the 2010 Summer Show.

Halloween, Costume and Party show returning to Stephens Center

‘Rosemont is our home’Christopher R. Stephens,

general manager, Don-ald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center, and Joseph Thaler, president, Transworld Exhibits, have announced that Transworld’s renowned “Halloween, Cos-

tume and Party” tradeshow is returning to the Stephens Center, from February 26 to March 1, 2010, after having been held in Las Vegas for the past two years.

More than 30 years ago, Transworld was one of the Stephens Center’s earliest clients, when Transworld founded and established its massive Merchandise Show, as well as its Housewares and Variety Show and its Fashion, Jewelry and Ac-cessory Show. More than 26 years ago, the company’s leadership took its greatest risk yet when it extracted the Halloween, Costume and

Party section from the larger and highly successful House-wares and Variety Show.

“We decided to afford a marketplace for the buy-ers and sellers focusing on Halloween. Those pro ting from the Halloween holiday, complementary costumers and all kinds of party goods dealers seemed to be ready for their own small market-place opportunity. Little did we know then that we would be witnessing the growth of a segment into a $5 billion industry.”

Hobby show

The holidays are a fun time of year. Whether it’s the crisp holi-days or the sultry days of summer, it makes no difference: Our

mission at Rosemont Health and Fitness is to help you have fun, while staying t and active.

So here are the Yuletide tips:Whatever you do, do it more actively. For example, we tend

to slow our pace when we are doing holiday shopping. Instead, make a list in advance of exactly where you want to go, and walk as fast as possible from one destination to the next. Pretend you’re a linebacker, weave in and out of the crowd as fast as possible, to get to your own personal end zone. You can wander at a slower pace later.

Dance, dance, dance. Think of Ellen DeGeneres and Dancing with the Stars. Dance every time you hear any kind of music.

Be like Donny Osmond, and for every task you give the chil-dren, ask them, “How can we make it into a game?” Give them time to come up with their own suggestions, and you will be inspiring their imaginations, as well as promoting tness.

Eat, drink and be merry as much as you can, in modera-tion. Then, like everyone else who lives or works in or near Rose-mont, come visit us on January 2nd for some valuable conditioning and activity that is guaranteed to make tness fun.

Have a great holiday season.

<< Continued from page 7Based on the common and recurring theme of returning the Summer Show to Rosemont, CHA contacted representatives from the Donald E. Stephens Convention and Conference Center and successfully negoti-ated a one-year agreement with options beyond 2010.

“As a member-based organiza-tion it is imperative that we lis-ten to our members and develop the most effective approach to accomplishing our common goals and objectives. Develop-ing a practical strategy to grow the Summer Show and expand the industry are high priori-ties at CHA and are key factors behind the bulk of the decisions we make,” explained Steve Berger, president and CEO of

CHA. “We are grateful for the creative minds in Orlando who partnered with CHA to develop a successful and meaningful program that helped increase buyer attendance and expand crafting participation with consumers. By working with our partners in Rosemont, we are con dent that the Trade Show will grow signi cantly and the SuperShow will continue to gain momentum becoming an integral part of CHA efforts to expand the craft industry.”

Wolff’s Flea Market announced the opening of its new indoor ea market at 1775 N. Rand Rd., in

Palatine, beginning Saturday, Nov. 21.Brothers David and Donald Wolff have operated this

well-known family run Chicago area xture for 18 years at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont.

“Loyal customers and vendors have followed us to four other successful indoor markets as well, and we are very excited to launch our new Palatine home!” said David Wolff.

This new location will house 400 vendors offering merchandise from everyday brand new staple items to antiques, collectibles, sports memorabilia, coins, DVDs, CDs, tools, electronics, clothing, socks, accessories, jewelry, books, household items, home décor, garage sale items and so much more! Thrifty shoppers, young and old are sure to nd something!

“Wolff ’s Flea Market is a must see for any bargain hunter, collector or curious newcomer. New, name brand merchandise at discount prices abound. There is some-thing for everyone and you won’t be disappointed!” said Donald Wolff.

“Today, more than ever, this type of business is a stan-dard for current trends. The concept of ‘Recycle, Reuse, Repurpose’ comes to life as vendors nd high quality ‘gently-owned’ merchandise and offer it at fair prices,” said Sharon Wolff, wife of David and secret shopper herself.

“Antique and collectible hunters never know what they will nd as each day and new box peered into is like a whole new world, just waiting for you,” said sister Eileen Wolff.

General Information: Open Saturdays and Sundays through March 2010. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cus-tomer admission is $1 for adults, 50 cents for seniors and children 6-12, under 6 are free. Open for vendors at 6 a.m. Visit the website at www.wolffs.com or call 847-524-9590 for more information.
