Almost one third of Europe’s population wiped out. Trees are easily the biggest and oldest of living things. A Douglas fir growing in the Powerscourt Estate, Co. Wicklow, is 57 metres in height and is Ireland’s tallest tree. However, it is little over half the height of the giant redwood which is almost the length of a football pitch. Oak and yew trees can live for 1,000 years, but these are mere teenagers compared to the bristlecone pines of California which are over 4,700 years old. We can accurately measure the age of trees, because as they grow, they add additional layers of wood or annual rings. In fast growing coniferous trees, there may be over a centimetre between rings, while in mature slow growing oaks there may be up to 15 rings to each centimetre. The bristlecone pine is so slow growing that there are nearly 100 rings to the centimetre.
