Welcome to Amazing Homes, asnapshot of signature residences

from across the region. The Herald has gathered together a

list of houses that highlight thehistorical, new, diverse and renovatedproperties that our readers call home.

So grab yourself a coffee, put yourfeet up and enjoy the journey.

We have stories of people takinginspiration from interstate houseswhen they set about building here inthe Barossa.

“We had a photo of a house inBendigo that we took inspirationfrom,” said Tanunda’s Lea Feuerherdt.

We’ve taken a look through alovingly restored 1850s stone cottagethat is now maintained as an awardwinning bed and breakfast.

“It’s an ongoing labour of love,” saidSeppeltsfiefld’s Sharyn Rogers.

A Tanunda family has shared theirstory of their journey with their house– starting with demolition orders andfinishing with stunning results.

“There was no bathroom, no kitchen

and no laundry. So we had to puteverything in – including the kitchensink,” said Tanunda’s NevillePellegrini.

The story of Nuriootpa’s CoulthardHouse has been revealed – thebuilding that has stood and watched atown grow around it.

We profile historic properties atMoculta and Kapunda, a buildingproject at Marananga and lookthrough a unique conversion inAngaston – fancy calling a MasonicHall home?

We meet Lee and Judi Prettejohn whohave fallen in love with Barossa Houseand created their own fairytale alongthe way. The couple was married intheir garden but you have to read thestory of the proposal to believe it.

This is the second edition of AmazingHomes and the Herald would sincerelylike to thank all residents who allowedus into their homes, the people whohelped us find the houses and theadvertisers – you have all helped tomake this feature possible.

Tanunda’s Wild Cherry Lane, tuckedaway neatly alongside a red gum

lined reserve, is home to Lea and AllenFeuerherdt’s entertainer. Their three-bedroom house was built withretirement in mind, it’s got great openspace for gathering the family together,a tiled swimming pool within metres ofthe back door a huge four-bay garage.

The swimming pool was Lea’srequirement - it has been positionedwithin metres of the back door thatslides open to a span of about fivemetres, connecting the outside withinside – the shed is to keep Allenoccupied.

“The pool turned out exactly how Iwanted it,” she said. “And the shed isperfect for Allen – he’s very much ashed man, he’s always out there. Icould imagine him being in the shedlots in retirement.”

Lea and Allen moved into the houseabout four years ago, after their

landscapers and builders had workedhard to deliver the desired look, with aparticular historic style of quoin work(the accents on the corners of thehouse) as a highlight.

“We had a photo of a house inBendigo that we took inspirationfrom,” Lea said.

To incorporate the quoins, thewindows had to be re-configured andthere was an extensive search to findthe right cream bricks. It turns out thebricks were actually sourced from thesame location as the inspiration for thelook – Bendigo.

The combination of the sloping block,a swimming pool and a largeunderground rainwater tank (underthe garage) required a large amount ofsoil to be removed from the site, butthe excavation work has resulted in aseamless flow from the front yard, upto the house and swimming pool withthe shed occupying the highest part of

the block out the back. The garden has been set up for

minimal maintenance and even withthe swimming pool, the property has avery low water usage. Inside of theclassic-style house bathroom, livingareas and kitchen all have a verymodern feel.

“People expect when they see thestyle of the house that we will have akitchen to match,” Lea said.

“My modern kitchen surprisespeople, but I love it.”

While Lea and Allen love their place, anew passion has seen them recentlyand reluctantly put their pride and joyon the market. They have found a lovefor campervan travelling and plan toset off on long trips around the countrywhen Allen does retire. Their newhobby looks to have put this amazinghome within reach of new owners.

cottage was sold by the Zankersin 1926, changing ownersseveral times before falling intothe nurturing hands of Sharynand Peter, who moved intotheir home adjacent to thecondemned cottage in 1993.Their vineyard produces wineunder the Seize the Day label.

The RenovationsBefore to renovations began

in 2002, the cottage was awhite ant riddled ruin wherePeter’s boys kept theirmotorbikes. However, the

thick stone walls and originaliron roof were intact. Barossabuilder James Bartsch andlocal craftsman AndrewPywell helped breathe life intothe ruin by restoring its manyoriginal features.

Along their journey, Sharynand Peter attended localauctions, rummaged throughsheds and searched the net inpursuit of original fixtures, such as 160 year old Germandoor locks and windowlatches. Quite literally the

couple made the cottage rollback in time.

Even after the restoration wascomplete Sharyn’s eye fordetail saw the front door of thecottage swapped with the backdoor after descendants of theoriginal family supplied aphoto showing the cottage’soriginal front entrance.

“It’s an ongoing labour oflove to keep the cottage inpremium condition,” she said.

The AccommodationThe cottage now boasts a

spacious living room withoriginal wood beamed mudceiling and includes a compactkitchenette, cleverly hiddeninside a beautiful ornatewooden cabinet.

Across the heated tiles in thewide hallway is a doublebedroom adjoining a spaciousbathroom with vineyardviews. Guests love the restoredoriginal 110 year old claw footbath, dug up from their gardenhaving been converted to afish pond! Beneath the cottage

living room is a cellar. Thestair well was dug out toreveal hand hewn woodensteps in perfect condition.

Sharyn says SeppeltsfieldVineyard Cottage is a highlysuccessful business whereguests marvel at therestoration and successfulblending of history withmodern comforts. “It is anexample of how we can viablyretain our historic Barossabuildings for everyone toenjoy and appreciate”.

When Neville and HelenPellegrini purchased 102

Murray Street, Tanunda, 25-years-ago there was a demolition order onthe wet areas. They spent their firstsix months renovating the housebefore they moved in. The keyelement throughout the processwas the great support the extendedfamilies offered along the way.

“There was no bathroom, nokitchen and no laundry,” Nevillesaid. “So we had to put everythingin - including the kitchen sink.”

The house had been in the Frietagfamily for more than 80 yearsbefore Neville and Helen purchasedit, but it had not been lived in forabout 15 years.

Neville said his dad, the late AlfPellegrini, remembered a verandahthat enclosed the whole house, butapparently an out-of-controlmotorbike crashed into it and onlypart of it was retained.

Alf was a well-known builder andtook on a great deal of therenovation work.

“Dad was the main organiser, we

followed and the whole familyhelped out,” Neville said.

“Everyone helped out scrapingplaster off the walls and cleaningup the garden.”

The removal of hedges andcreepers - which the family likes todescribe like the cleanup requiredin the Sleeping Beauty fairytale -actually uncovered a terrificsurprise in the garden.

“Finding the glasshouse was a realbonus,” Helen said.

It created another restoration jobfor Alf, but the finished product stilltakes pride of place in the garden.

Meanwhile, the clean up insidesaw the kitchen completelyrenovated, the walls stripped andreplastered, the original wood firewas cleaned, restored and put backin as a feature.

The entrance to the cellar was re-configured, new shelving wasinstalled along with a table andsome seats. The cellar is now aquiet hide-away spot to enjoy aglass of wine or two.

One of the features introduced to

the dining room was part of theoriginal bar from the TanundaClub.

“We pulled all that apart, built anew back for it and changed thetop, but we kept all the originalhand-made nails and all those wentback in as we put it back together,”Neville said.

The house has been the place forentertaining the extended familyand its central location meantAaron (22) and Daniel (17)regularly have friends stop in andstay over. But now that the boyshave grown up the big family homeand its big garden aren’t toppriorities any more and Neville andHelen have purchased a block ofland in one of Tanunda’s neweststreets - Alf Pellegrini Drive.

“It will be sad to go, but it’s time,”Neville said. “For me, and I guessfor dad who was a carpenter and abuilder, a house is just a house.

“But here there has been a realfamily connection because we allworked on it together when we firstgot it.”

Most people pass the two-storyCoulthard House and not realise

the 155-year-old bluestone building hasbeen a silent partner as the Barossa’sbusiness hub grew around it.

The migrant William Coulthard madehis way to the Barossa in 1841, wasgranted the Hundred of Nuriootpa in1850 - most of the land that now makesup the town centre - opened the town’sfirst tavern and selected the site for hisown home. Nuriootpa’s Bob Kingexplained that Coulthard beganbuilding the house in 1855.

“Unfortunately, before he finished ithe was out looking for grazing countryand he died of thirst before he couldreach the Pernatty Lagoon out the backof Port Augusta,” Bob said. “The housewas finished by his son John.”

It was John Coulthard’s son William(the original William’s grandson) whobecame the most famous resident of thehouse that Elfrida Jensen, in her bookBarossa Foundations, described asproviding “charm to the otherwiseundistinguished architecture of MurrayRoad, Nuriootpa”.

William was the philanthropist ofNuriootpa. He shaped not only the waythe town grew, but the development ofit’s sense of community. For example, when work on the construction of anew oval complex began Williamoffered 15 acres for £1,500 to theCommunity Committee, but when theprice was considered beyond themeans of the committee to finance hegave them half the area for free.

One weekend, while William was out

of town, more than 150 people turnedup to a ‘working bee’ and did somefencing. When William returned hefound that 18.5 acres had been fencedoff, but he accepted his loss withoutcomplaint and in his will left a furthersix acres of land and an additional£1,000 for maintenance purposes.

According to the Barossa Foundationsbook, William died on Christmas Dayin 1953, Nuriootpa grieved “as only atown could who knew how deeply hehad cared for its townfolk” and thefuneral was so large that the mainstreet had to be closed to cars.

“He was a rich man and he more orless left the lot to the community,” Bobsaid. “From William’s estate and a lotof Commonwealth Governmentsubsidy, the town bought the Vine Inn,the Community Store and was able tobuild the swimming pool, kindergarten, RSL hall and the seniorcitizens nursing home.”

The one thing that wasn’t initiallypassed to the community wasCoulthard House, it was left to anephew who sold it to the CommunityCentre Committee for $7,000.

“When the community first bought it,it became a boarding house, then a girlshostel and for quite a few years theyoung high school teachers lived there, the Shell motor oil company also usedthe house as offices,” Bob said. “Afterthat it became a bottle museum and anart gallery for a couple of years.

“I was one of those people with moreenergy than cents and I helped to buildup a folk museum there, with things

that went back to the origins of theregion - furniture, farming equipmentand all sorts.”

Bob said the museum ran from 1970until the mid 80s and when it closedthe sale of many of the items raisedmore than $30,000 that was put asidefor the maintenance of the house. It’smost recent history has been as thenational office for Apex Australia.

“It is still pretty much as theCoulthards had it when they livedthere,” Bob said. “I think is would begood if it was occupied by a business.”

Cameron Ashmead, president of theNuriootpa Regional CommunityAssociation (NuRCA), said it is abeautiful old building and agreed thatit was in need of new tenants.

“Apex have the current lease andhave been in there since about 2000,”Cameron said. “But they have movedtheir national office and we have had iton the market for lease for a fewmonths. It’s suitable for office space, there are four larger rooms bothupstairs and downstairs and more than300 square metres of space.”

It is heritage listed so the options forconversion to a restaurant oraccommodation could be limited, but itwould make for an ideal commercialoffice space for a business looking toset up somewhere with lots ofcharacter.

“William Coulthard left it for thepeople of Nuriootpa,” Cameron said.“And our job is to safeguard it for thefuture. Obviously the best way to dothat will be to get a tenant in there.”

It helps to have a handyman in the house.Without one, the Hennig household in

Marananga would not be what it is today.Harry and Margaret Hennig bought their

dream property on Marananga Road back in1990.

Harry, a blacksmith by trade, and Margarethave spent the past 21 years building thecouple’s home and establishing gardens.

The three-acre property is a testament to thecouple’s dedication.

“We based (the house) on a design from amagazine so we more or less got our builderto do it the way we wanted it,” Margaretsaid. “It’s basically our design.”

Featuring plenty of space, including threebedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen anddining area, lounge/sitting room, hallway, office and laundry, the impressive double-brick two-storey home is perfect for theHennigs.

“We moved in when the house wasn’tfinished really,” Margaret said.

“Since then, Harry has finished off thebathrooms, and the bedrooms, he did all thekitchen himself as well. It’s been built insections as we could afford it really.”

The home even has an attic, spanning theentire length of the house, which couldeventually become a third floor studio andfourth bedroom.

However, it is the custom-madeconservatory that takes pride of place.

Built three years ago, Margaret describes thelight-filled addition as her dream room.

“It’s just beautiful in here – you can see theviews of the garden and down to the road,”she said.

The ever-changing property is a continuouswork in progress.

“It’s a lifestyle – what do you do on theweekend, do you travel away somewhere ordo you stay home and do a little bit morebuilding?

“I like building – it’s good,” Harry said. But there have certainly been plenty of

challenges along the way – especially whentrying to build an A-frame roof 10 metres offthe ground.

“I had a friend who was a German builderso you can see the touch of the German styleand I worked with him,” Harry said.

“He moved away fairly early and then Ifinished it all myself.”

Completing major and minor work onweekends, the property went from a blankcanvas to a lush mixture of plants, pavingand pergolas.

And for all the hard work, Harry said hefully expects his sturdy home to stand thetest of time.

“A place like this, it’ll be still there in 150years,” he said.

But next on the agenda is a new chook shed– and true to form, it will certainly be noordinary enclosure.

The Plush family built BarossaHouse in 1926 at a time when its

stretch of Barossa Valley Way atDorrien was planted with stone fruitorchards. It was a grand house forthe times and with a tennis court inthe front yard, it became well knownin the area for tennis days and othersocial gatherings. It was extendedand maintained as a privateresidence until the mid 80s when itbecame one of the Barossa’s first bedand breakfasts.

It is almost 10 years ago to the daythat Lee and Judi Prettejohn tookownership of the property and beganto make their mark inside, out in thegarden and on the hospitality offer.

“We know from its history that itwas a very social house and we liketo think we’ve carried on thattheme,” Judi said. “And it has been10 very busy years and veryrewarding years.”

Lee had been a nurseryman forabout 50 years before moving toBarossa House, Judi’s background isalso in the nursery industry, havingbeen part owner of a wholesalenursery. Lee is well known for hisweekend role on FiveAA and Judi isalso a Registered Nurse. The coupleloves interacting with people andthis has been the secret of theirsuccessful bed and breakfast

business, but they have also madetheir mark on the property - bothinside and out.

“The garden has seen an extrememakeover,” Judi said.

“When we moved in you couldn’tsee the house from the road, therewas kikuyu taking over everywhereand lots of almond trees,” Lee said.“We removed about 75cm of soilbrought in 150 tonnes of new top soiland started again.”

“A friend helped with the conceptplan for our landscape design, wehad a lot of connections to sourceplants through and Lee worked very, very hard,” Judi said. “In our firstfive years here Lee spent a lot of timeout there in the garden. I keep tellinghim that I wish I got as muchattention as his rose bushes.”

The couple has certainly put theirstamp on the garden, but they’ve alsochanged the interior of the housequite a bit. The bed and breakfast iscurrently configured with three guestrooms, but it is about to become four.Lee and Judi have named each ofthem, there is already the GardenView, Photinia View and EucalyptusView while the upstairs JacarandaView room will be completed in thecoming weeks.

“It’s a beautiful house, I’m in lovewith it,” Lee said.

“We have done all the rooms upourselves, they’re entirely differentnow. In the Eucalyptus View roomwe pulled everything out and startedagain, removed the doors andwindow and replaced them withFrench Doors, there’s dimming lightsand a twin shower – very romantic.”

The view from the kitchen windowand the front verandah, looking outacross the front garden andvineyards, is a favourite part of theproperty for the owners – but theguests also fall in love with it.

“We love sitting out there andwatching the sun set over thevineyards. I had one lady say to us,‘why would I want to go to Francewhen I can have views like this in theBarossa’,” Judi said.

In fact, that was the setting for thecouple’s wedding proposal whenJudi made the most of February 29 inthe 2004 leap year to ask Lee tomarry her.

“It was another day I had to draghim away from his ‘girls’, the roses.Actually, I gently coerced him awaywith a nice bottle of red and askedhim ‘how about it’ and he said‘what?!’ But he said yes when I gotdown on one knee.”

The couple was married in thegarden within months and it hasbeen ‘happy ever after’.

“After getting 3 quotes for our pergola, R & M Timber came in below the others by $5000!We had a few tricky spots to cover but they worked it out without any fuss. We didn’t haveto do a thing. They organised council approval and our pergola was up in two days! Weare absolutely thrilled with the quality result and it has added more value to the house thanthe cost of the pergola. We would highly recommend R & M Timber to anyone thinking ofadding an addition to their house”.

It’s been a part of Angaston’shistory since 1870 and has

served many functions over theyears.

Today, thanks to extensiverenovations, the formerMasonic Hall is now a uniquehome.

The land the building sits onwas donated by Barossapioneer George Angas in 1868.

The building itself wasopened two years later as amechanic’s institute, whereadults would come to learn.

Since then, it has been home tothe first library in Angaston, was used to hold dances and

was a venue for musicalperformances.

It is also understood that thefirst viewing of motion picturestook place in the building. Atother times, the property hashoused a local barber and atemporary shop after ashopkeeper’s store wasdestroyed by fire.

It was also a Masonic Lodgefor many years. However, it hasnow been transformed forresidential use. Featuring 18-foot ceilings, the sheer size ofthe building is something tomarvel. It even has originaldoors, windows, open fire

places and other period fittings. From the outside, the striking

building features a grandentrance off Murray Street thatleads into the upper floor.

There are two bedrooms, bothwith fireplaces, at the front ofthe house as well as two largerooms used as living areas.

Downstairs is somewhat of ablank canvas, with rooms thatcould be used as bedrooms andliving spaces.

Surrounded by establishedgardens, this piece of theBarossa’s history is currently upfor sale and would make anamazing home.
