  • BERLINThe Brandenburg Gate has been the site of many of Berlins major historical events. Constructed in 1791 to represent peace, it became a landmark during some of Germanys more turbulent times. It was used by Napoleon for a triumphal procession after the Battle of JenaAuerstedt between France and Prussia, was a symbol of power during World War II, was incorporated into the Berlin Wall during the Cold War era, and was the dramatic backdrop for President Ronald Reagan's 1987 tear down this wall speech. Delicious Youd be hard pressed to run out of places to eat on this ship.Rather than having a traditi onal main dining room, there are four large complimentary restaurants that are part of the dynamic dining program. Dine on Asian fusion delicacies at Silk, indulge in traditi onal high-end cuisine at The Grande, enjoy dinner with a contemporary fl air at Chic, or fall back on classic comfort food at American Icon Grill. And with more opti ons ranging from Royal Caribbeans classic steakhouse, Chops Grille, to the molecular gastronomy haven that is the fantasti cal Wonderland, to a classic French caf tucked in along the Royal Promenade, Anthem has fl avors to suit every taste.

Cutting Edge At ti mes it feels like every litt le thing on board the Anthem is automated in a good way. Check-in is as simple as fl agging down a blue-shirted representati ve and answering a few questi ons, as long as youve completed your registrati on online ahead of ti me (you can even upload a picture in advance). Nowhere is this used to more stylish eff ect than in the Bionic Bar, where orders are placed on a tablet and put into a virtual queue. Two roboti c bartenders then make the drinks, which are released with a swipe of your onboard ID card or WOWband a wristband that serves as room key, credit card, and identi fi cati on all rolled into one.

HOW DO WE Love ANTHEM? LET US COUNT THE WAYS

Cape Liberty, just a few miles from New York City, has a new resident, and if youre anything like us, you cant wait to be wowed by her. We were so impatient, in fact, that we scored a spot on an inaugural sailing, only the second time shed sailed out of the port that Royal Caribbean announced would be her new year-round home.

Her name is Anthem of the Seas and were pretty sure youre going to love her. Its not hard to come up with words to describe the Anthem; the challenge is in limiting yourself to only a few.

Modern Even beyond its state-of-the-art technology, Anthem has a contemporary look and feel throughout the ship. The art collecti on is stunning, from a ten-story fl oral mural that runs along the central elevator lobby, to painti ngs down every corridor of staterooms, to an enormous giraff e statue on the outside of the upper deck. Even the entertainment areas are a testament to all things contemporary areas like Two70, with its wraparound windows looking out on the ocean, are open and airy, and when nightti me entertainment takes over it becomes a gorgeous canvas for lights and projecti ons.

Relaxing With plenty of pools and what seems like miles of deck chairs, theres no shortage of places to soak up the sun onboard Anthem. On our November sailing, we even headed up to the adults-only Solarium (the indoor secti on) as we sailed away from the port. One bonus of Anthems new year-round home? The gorgeous views. Before heading out to sea, we sailed up the Hudson and got some incredible looks at the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, and the Empire State Building (if you looked hard, you could even see Times Square!).

Thrilling There are so many activities on board the Anthem of the Seas that it seems impossible to get bored, and theyre anything but the quiet bingo afternoons you might have in mind. From rock-climbing walls to bumper cars to Flow Riders, youll never run out of excitement on the Anthem. The options are just as wide-ranging as the ocean youre sailing on. And in case you get tired of all the activities on the decks, soar above them on the North Star, a capsule on top of the ship that ascends to 300 feet above sea level and out over the side of the ship, giving you a whole new perspective of Anthem and everything around her.

What words will you nd to describe the Anthem of the Seas?

  • Your Guide to Costa Rica!

The only thing Liberty Travel Expert Michelle Ellis loves more than Costa Rica is sharing her stories and knowledge of this fascinating and emerging travel destination. Michelle took some time to answer questions that will help you get ready for the ultimate trip to an eco-paradise!

Q: Costa Rica is quickly gaining popularity as a must-see destination. Whats behind that interest?

A: One of the things that makes it so appealing and so wonderful to me is the people of Costa Rica. They truly embody the pura vida spirit. Pura vida [literally translated: pure life] is like saying good morning, good evening, thank you everything is pura vida.

So when you go to Costa Rica, everyone is just so welcoming, so nice, and so friendly. Theyre so happy that you could have chosen anywhere to go and you chose their country, and theyre going to really show you that pura vida experience. When I go there, I really feel so comfortable and so at home. Its a very safe destination.

After that, its just the fact theres so many things to do there. Its not a destination where youre going to op and just stay in a hotel for six nights. Youre going to go on a canopy tour, youre going to do a nature

Costa RicA:Pull Back the Green Curtain to this Eco-ParadiseBy Phil Gusman and Jed HauckBy Phil Gusman and Jed Hauck

Costa Rica lives up to its name the Rich Coast. Its tropical beaches stretch along the Caribbean Sea in the east and the Paci c Ocean in the west, and they deliver every imaginable sand and sea experience, from white to dark volcanic sand; from calm, tepid waters to relentlessly crashing surf. Choose a palm-fringed beach for lazy days of sunbathing, a secluded bay for a romantic interlude, or a wide and expansive stretch of sand for game playing. Bond with nature on a beach that doubles as a turtle nesting ground, slip into the sea for some of the worlds best scuba diving, and mingle with locals on a beach that comes alive after sunset.

But the beaches are only one small part of Costa Ricas story. Between the coasts, Costa Rica boasts plateaus with lush green meadows, mystical cloud forests, active volcanoes, waterfalls and streams that cut through the terrain, and rainforests that chatter with life.

Its a paradise for ecotourists, with an impossibly wide range of biodiversity and a full 26 percent of its natural territory protected through the creation of national parks, wildlife refuges, wetlands, and natural reserves.

Take a morning canopy walk through the perpetually misty Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, bask along the inviting white-gray beaches and thick green foliage of Manuel Antonio National Park, or join a night tour to see ery lava erupt from the Arenal Volcano, the country's most active volcano.

Meanwhile, Costa Ricas capital city of San Jose is becoming a booming metropolis and a bustling cosmopolitan center where you can dine on excellent cuisine and share in the warm and welcoming culture.

The only thing Liberty Travel Expert Michelle Ellis loves more than Costa Rica is sharing her stories and knowledge of this fascinating and emerging travel destination. Michelle took some time to answer questions that will help you get ready for the ultimate trip

Costa Rica is quickly gaining popularity as a must-see destination.

One of the things that makes it so appealing and so wonderful to me is the people of Costa Rica. They truly embody the pura vida spirit. Pura vida [literally translated: pure life] is like saying good morning,

So when you go to Costa Rica, everyone is just so welcoming, so nice, and so friendly. Theyre so happy that you could have chosen anywhere to go and you chose their country, and theyre going to really show you that pura vida experience. When I go there, I really feel so comfortable

walk, you're going to visit the rainforest, and you have the beach. There are so many different options for the adventurous vacationer, and also that vacationer who does just want to have that beach experience. It offers a lot of diversity. Costa Rica has 5 percent of the worlds biodiversity and species, so thats huge for a small country.

Its just a place where I really think our customers will have a great time, and I truly love the destination.

Q: Costa Rica is known for its natural beauty. Whats your favorite spot for experiencing Costa Ricas natural beauty?

A: Monteverde, to me, is a special place. Youre 5,000 feet above sea level. Youre in the rainforest but the clouds are right above your head. Its de nitely a cool experience if youre looking for that type of tourism.

Q: How can visitors to Costa Rica experience its natural beauty? Do they have to book tours to see the sights?

A: A lot of the areas - Monteverde, Arenal you dont have to go on a bus or a group tour. You can just go to the parks. There are local parks where you can pay an entrance fee, and there are park guides all around as youre walking through who will answer questions for you. You can take that initiative and do it yourself.

Costa Rica 101Q: What do rst-time visitors need to know about traveling to Costa Rica?

A: A problem that I see a lot and I met someone when I was fl ying to San Jose recently who was in this scenario Costa Rica has two internati onal airports. And its very important to realize if youre going to the Guanacaste province/Liberia area and you book your fl ight to San Jose, thats about a six or seven hour transfer.

If youre going to the Guanacaste area, fl y into Liberia. If youre doing Monte Verde and Arenal and youre not going to Guanacaste, then defi nitely fl y into San Jose.

So I met someone on the fl ight who was going to a hotel in Liberia, but he had his fl ight and arrangements through San Jose. Thats a whole two days out of your vacati on when you think about it. I asked who booked his trip, and he did it himself.

Q: What is the main difference between the two areas?

A: The majority of hotels in the Guanacaste/Liberia area are all-inclusive hotels theyre your bigger resort-type of hotels with beach access.

When youre going out to the Monteverde area [closer to San Jose], thats more of that biodiversity, that ecotourism, that cultural type of trip that youre going to be taking. Youre going to San Jose, staying maybe one night in the city, and then moving on from there, maybe doing Manuel Antonio, probably Monteverde, or even Arenal to get that hot spring experience. Thats something Costa Rica is famous for in the Arenal area the volcano heats the water underground and creates hot springs.

Q: Whats your recommendation for travelers who have been to a resort destination like Cancun and who might be looking at Costa Rica as a next step in their international travels?

A: Defi nitely Guanacaste. When youre thinking about that Cancun kind of feel, Guanacaste is very similar to Riviera Maya, where the hotels are a litt le further apart youre going to need a transfer or car to get around, but I think thats the perfect transiti on.

And then from there you can actually do day tours. We do have day tours out of the Guanacaste area to Arenal Volcano and also a lot of canopy and adventure tours whitewater raft ing and things of that nature. I think Guanacaste would be perfect to start, and defi nitely do one or two day tours with your six-night stay.

Q: Any Guanacaste-area resorts really stand out for you?

A: I have had the chance to visit a few. The Westi n stands out. Great cuisine they have a wonderful french restaurant. Its the only all-inclusive Starwood brand they have in their list of hotels. The beach is one of the best beaches in the Playa Conchal area. Its very calm. Westi n has a wonderful spa, too.

Also Dreams Las Mareas is a new resort its about a 1.5 hour transfer from the Liberia airport, whereas most of the other resorts are 45 minutes. But its a gorgeous property, and something that is bringing development and jobs to that area.

Q: What should these rst-time travelers to Costa Rica expect upon landing at the Liberia airport?

A: If they have something pre-arranged through Liberty Travel, Swiss Travel will be there to pick them up. Similar to transfers when you go to Mexico or the Caribbean, theyll be waiti ng with a sign for you. There are rental car opti ons, too, and Costa Rica is safe and the infrastructure is very good. In the last three years theyve developed a lot of the roads.

I dont see a lot of taxis, and I wouldnt recommend a taxi if youre going to go 45 minutes or so. Its just easier to go with a transfer company.

Thats why having a travel agent is so important.

Q: What do you get with an Insider Experience that you cannot get on a standard tour in Costa Rica?

A: If youre traveling lets say with your family of four, this will be a totally diff erent experience. Youre not going on a bus transfer where you have 20 people; it's a much more private experience. You have a connecti on with the guide the guide is giving you additi onal informati on about your tour. The Insider Experiences are so unique and private. Its building that family memory, which is really what going on vacati on is all about. And its giving that look into the culture of the country, where you wouldnt necessarily get that by going on a normal tour.

Q: How do the Insider Experiences provide that look into Costa Ricas culture ?

A: One of the Insider Experiences involves being on the farm, working with the farmers, and seeing what they do. And we have some tours where you go to a locals home and share a traditi onal Costa Rican

Q: For more seasoned travelers looking to immerse themselves a bit more in their destination, is San Jose the place to be?

A: San Jose is defi nitely where youd fl y into. Thats going to be your hub for getti ng to other areas where a lot of the adventure is in Costa Rica. If youre looking to have that adventurous type of trip, you can start there and branch out to so many diff erent areas that are about two to three hours from San Jose. So you could spend a night in the city and move on.

Costa Rica is a small country, so its defi nitely easy to get around. You jump in a car, drive two hours, and youre in Manuel Antonio. You drive another three hours or so and youre in Monteverde so you can hop in a rental car with your friends and just go.

meal. So were doing that for customers who want to be a part of the culture. Youre going to a familys home, youre picking ingredients from markets. Youre also getti ng a guide who knows a lot about the desti nati on and whos going to share informati on about the country and the tour that youre doing.

Q: Whats your favorite Costa Rica Insider Experience?

A: The one that I love is swimming with horses out of Dreams Las Mareas. We have a lot of tours that off er horseback riding, but I think the fact you get to cross the river with the horses thats defi nitely an amazing experience; if youre doing it with your family, youre going to have that memory.

And one thing thats great about all the Costa Rica Insider Experiences: Swiss Travel put together truly unique tours. A lot of the tours are new; theyre not tours we currently have. Theyre new and designed with Liberty Travel customers in mind.

The Insider Experiences overall are unique and great!

Q: Whats something that well-traveled people might not know about Costa Rica, even if theyve been there before?

A: Costa Rica does not get recognized for having great food, but in fact it does! I think people need to be a litt le more adventurous. And the food there is very cheap. If youre staying in that San Jose area and branching out, you need to understand the majority of hotels are not all inclusive, so youre going to have the opportunity to go out and dine, and the cuisine there is really wonderful.

Ive been to a lot of restaurants there. Arenal Springs is a hotel thats in Arenal, and its gorgeous. You have a view of the volcano, part of the hotel is inside the rainforest, and they have a phenomenal restaurant wonderful beef and pork dishes.

Advanced Costa Rica For the Travel Pros

THERE ARE TOURS, AND THERE ARE INSIDER EXPERIENCES

What could be better than a vacation to Costa Rica? Making it a Liberty Travel Escape! When you travel to Costa Rica, youre going to explore. Its that kind of destination. Youll want to see the rainforest, experience the biodiversity; take in the fascinating culture. So why not book your sightseeing in advance of your trip? Do that, and you have yourself a Liberty Travel Escape, and all the perks that come with it, from personalized keepsake documents to a future travel credit for next years adventure.

And if youre going to book a sightseeing excursion, youll want to make it an Insider Experience. Insider Experiences are not just tours. Theyre unique, often private, and created with the sole purpose of truly connecting you to the wonders and culture of Costa Rica.

Whats so special about Insider Experiences? Liberty Travel Expert Michelle Ellis explains.

Poi Youve heard of it. Its the quintessenti al Hawaiian dish everyone menti ons the second you say youre going to a luau, but what is it? Its created simply by steaming or baking the root of a taro plant and pounding unti l smooth. It is then thinned with water and made into a mildly purple paste that is slightly sweet. The fresher the poi the more delicate the taste, as the fi nished dish has a natural fermentati on that will cause it to take on a sour fl avor. Poi is served in various consistencies, one-fi nger, two-fi nger, or three-fi nger, which refers to how many fi ngers are required to scoop it up. Look for a subtly sweet, three-finger poi served at Paradise Cove Luau on Oahu.

    The Hawaiian Food Journey:

Kalua Pork Another icon of the luau: the underground roasted whole pig. Many cultures use the underground oven (imu in Hawaiian) cooking technique along with celebratory feasts incorporati ng the dramati c unearthing from the oven as part of the ceremony. The meat that is cooked in an imu will absorb the fl avors of the elements used in the pit: mesquite or koa wood, banana and/or ti leaves, as well as the surrounding soil, creati ng a unique fi nal result. Once removed from the imu the pork meat is shredded, allowing the juices and fat to mix in for the utmost moisture. Enjoy a hearty helping at the Old Lahaina Luau or as a pupu (appetizer) in Merrimans Kapalua Kalua Pig and Sweet Onion Quesadilla, both found on Maui.

There are few things in life that can jolt memories as distinctly as the aromas and avors of past meals savored. As a traveler in todays celebrity chef obsessed generation, its easier than ever to nd delicious examples of local cuisines to delight in.

Some recipes are so unique to their regions that there is a slim chance of nding those avors in other parts of the world. Hawaiian cuisine, while inspired by its mix of immigrant cultures, is full of unmistakable combinations of one-of-a-kind tastes. When visiting Hawaii, whether island hopping or taking a long weekend to unplug along Waikiki, you shouldnt miss out on delighting in these notable bites.

Loco Moco Another uncomplicated local creati on that can be found in cafs and food trucks, yet be elevated by accomplished chefs in unending ways. The original is a plate lunch of white rice topped with a hamburger patt y layered with a fried egg and given a pouring of brown gravy. Its home-style, comfort, hangover food at its core and sati sfi es no matt er the ti me of day. On the Big Island youve got to go to the Home of the Loco Moco, for over 50 years, Caf 100 in Hilo has been bringing it to the table and now serves over 30 loco dishes.

Poke Bowl Pronounced poh-kay, yeah, its raw, diced ahi tuna seasoned with salty soy sauce and tossed with fi nely chopped seaweed, usually layered in a bowl with rice and fi nished with additi ons of cubed avocado and mixed with a spicy mayo, or sprinkled with sesame seeds. Find it. Its served up at delis, in the prepared food aisle of grocery stores, and scooped handily at food trucks. Known for its freshness (which is key), Umekes, with three locations in Kailua-Kona, serves it up perfectly.

Whats an island vacation without an embarrassing umbrella drink in your hand? So, we give you the Mai Tai. Sipping a Mai Tai at a beachfront caf at sunset while the ukulele player strums a soothing melody a Hawaiian Vacati on Win. For years to come you will be brought back to the islands whenever your taste buds spike to the tartness of fresh tropical fruit juices combined with the warm spiciness of the caramel rich rum. Every mixologist in the islands puts their stamp on a personal version of a Mai Tai with subtle twists, but for sipping with an iconic view of Diamond Head in a legendary spot we send you confi dently to the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai Bar on Waikiki.

Lomi Salmon A refreshing and rich, salad of raw, salted salmon diced roughly and tossed with tomatoes and Maui sweet onions, spiced with chili peppers. Its perhaps a recipe that could be easily assembled in a home kitchen, but it could never taste as remarkably fresh as it does on the islands. Save room for it on your plate at the luau buffet or look for it along side your plate lunch at Pau Hana Market in Waikiki.

Huli Huli Chicken Hawaiians know how to grill; we mean they KNOW how to grill chicken. A sweet basti ng of huli huli sauce enti ces the fl ames of the grill to create a delicate char that makes you come back for more. A

fl avorful condiment made from a mix of soy sauce, pineapple juice, brown sugar, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce make this a kicked-up teriyaki-esque dish like no other. Its a go-to dinner at Dukes Waikiki at Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort on Oahu.

Spam Musubi A ridiculously basic bite built out of just a few ingredients; furikaki (a staple spice in Japanese kitchens) fl avored rice shaped into a block topped with a slice of fried spam wrapped ti ght with a sheet of dried nori. Its a snack or a whole meal and one of the most easily found Hawaiian delicacies on the islands. While the fi nal creati on may resemble a precious piece of sushi, Spam Musubi can be found at most convenience stores for a quick grab and go. For those wanting to taste multiple variations on this classic as well as enjoy a food festival for the adventurous palate, an afternoon at Spam Jam is a must-do happening April 30, 2016 in Honolulu.

Now we know youll stray from our suggestions and stroll

casually into a friendly deli along Front Street for a quick

lunch, but we feel better knowing that youll recognize that

Huli Huli chicken coming off the grill or fresh poke being

spooned from the case. Its all 'ono!

  • TOP FIVE Destination Wedding LocationsFew things in life are as important as your

wedding day, and anyone who keeps up

with the latest travel trends has certainly

noticed the growing popularity of destination weddings over the past several years. Many couples seem to agree

that celebrating one of the most special

days of their lives somewhere a bit exotic

is the icing on the cake. For many of them,

going somewhere new and exciting is at the top of their list, and not much farther down that list are budget and

accessibility; not just for them but for their

    friends and family.

So what locations are found most frequently on a destination wedding list?

  • JANUARY MARCH 2016 | LIBERTY TRAVEL 23

CancunAt the top of that list is Cancun. With a fairly central locati on, Cancun is easy to get to for both east and west coast travelers. Beauti ful beaches, numerous resorts and energeti c nightlife make Cancuns hotel zone one of the more dynamic choices these days. The area aff ords travelers with hotels to suit every budget, along with nightclubs, shops, and restaurants.

Riviera MayaAnother popular choice is the Riviera Maya. Although not far from Cancun, this Yucatan desti nati on is a very diff erent experience. Its long beaches and uninterrupted coastline make for some of the best walking beaches in the Caribbean. The now famous Playa del Carmen boasts a pedestrian thoroughfare, off ering blocks of shops, restaurants, and nightlife ranging from bars to dance clubs. To the south, Tulum is home to a quieter experience alongside the preserved ruins of an ancient Mayan port city, perched above a beach.

JamaicaFor those who are willing to venture a bit farther south, Jamaica is a fabulous opti on. A more laid-back choice than Cancuns hotel zone, Jamaica reminds us that we are on vacati on and far from home with its charm and ambiance. Golf, outdoor adventure, beauti ful beaches, and world class cuisine make this island an ideal choice.

Punta CanaNext on the list is Punta Cana, the easternmost province in the Dominican Republic. Idyllic white sand beaches are made for walking, and the beauti ful, clear water is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and a variety of other water sports. Punta Cana has seen tremendous growth over the past several years with the Bavaro area becoming well known as a bustling hub featuring shopping malls, restaurants, banks, supermarkets, and schools. Sti ll, the all-inclusive experience remains the most popular choice among travelers to this area.

BahamasLast but not least is the Bahamas. Close proximity to mainland America is a big draw as well as the percepti on that the Bahamas is a great value. While airfare is oft en reasonable, one must keep in mind that the hotels in Nassau and Paradise Island are oft en more expensive than other Caribbean islands like the Dominican Republic or Jamaica. Sti ll, the combinati on of the beaches, casinos, nightlife, and modern ameniti es make the Bahamas an excellent choice!

  • 32 LIBERTY TRAVEL | JANUARY MARCH 2016

There are 12 categories of travel that your trip can fall under in order to be legal under U.S. law. While the government hasnt been too strict so far in vetting the schedules of travelers who want to go, ordinary tourism is still a non-starter, and youll be expected to keep track of the receipts from your trip for the next five years in case there are any questions. The most common category for Americans to travel under is educational activities, which include those people-to-people trips youve probably heard about.

While you cant lie on the sand and sip mojitos all day, there are plenty of other things to do on your trip. Due to regulations, the simplest way to travel is with a tour group, like Globus or G Adventures. Their booked schedules wont give you much free time, but you will have the opportunity for remarkable experiences, like meeting dancers from Camagey Ballet Company, touring a cigar factory, and exploring centuries-old coffee plantations. Youll also, due to a lack of high-end hotels in Cuba, often get the opportunity to spend a few evenings in a homestay with a Cuban family.

The other upside to scheduled tours is that some can arrange airfare for you, though this became less vital following the announcement at the end of 2015 that regular scheduled flights could resume between the U.S. and Cuba this year. This agreement marked the end to a need for expensive chartered flights or complicated arrangements that involved travel through a third country.

Of course, there is one other way to travel to Cuba, and given the island's lack of hotels, it might be one of the best cruise ships. While, as with flights, regulations are still being sorted out, it is already permissible for ships to sail between the U.S. and Cuba as long as all the passengers onboard are allowed to travel. While the infrastructure already exists for smaller cruise ships, companies like Carnival have been among the first to be awarded licenses.

Cuba is opening up rapidly, and more and more Americans will be traveling there soon. The restrictions, though, still make it tricky to figure out all the rules, so count on your travel agent to help you navigate all the red tape.

Its been a year since the announcement of the Cuban Thaw, the beginning of normalized relations between Cuba and the United States. In that time, almost unprecedented numbers of Americans have traveled to visit one of our closest neighbors, joining the Canadians, Europeans, and more who have been visiting for decades. But Americans still dont have carte blanche carta blanca? to visit Cuba on a whim and spend a week on the beach. There are a number of restrictions American travelers should be aware of before planning their trip to the Pearl of the Antilles.

As tensions ease between the U.S. and Cuba, Americans are thinking about travel.

  • Home to a population of just 120,000 ensconced comfortably within its compact city limits, Reykjavik is the worlds northernmost national capital. The bustling port, buzzing nightlife, and geothermal baths are some of the main attractions, but art and culture are also rich in Reykjavik and the city offers many quality museums and galleries.

  • JANUARY MARCH 2016 | LIBERTY TRAVEL 35

Top attractionsDominati ng the citys skyline, you cant miss Hallgrmskirkja, a striking 244-foot high church with architecture inspired by the countrys basalt lava fl ows. Those wishing to learn more about Icelands proud cultural heritage should make The Nati onal Museum of Iceland their fi rst port of call, closely followed by Reykjavik Art Museum, Culture House, and the Mariti me Museum. Those with ti me to spare should also venture to the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfalls, a picturesque 90-minute drive from the city center. Perhaps Icelands most iconic image is that of steam rising from the blackened lava coated Blue Lagoon. The warm waters at this geothermal spa are rich in minerals including silica and sulfur, and a swim is reason enough for many people to visit Reykjavik.

Food and drinkAround Laugavegur and Austurvollur Square is where youll fi nd many of Reykjaviks most popular places to eat and drink. Fish Market and Grilled Market are two notable restaurants to visit, and both off er some of the fi nest contemporary Icelandic cuisine. Icelandic cuisine? Yes indeed! That means smoked pu n, grilled whale meat, and dried reindeer are all on the menu. If theyre not for you, try Icelandic Fish and Chips, a lower-key place that off ers a delicious version of another one of the countrys classic dishes. Further down the price scale youll fi nd humble hot dog stand Bjarins Beztu Pylsur. Operati ng since 1939, many visiti ng luminaries, including Bill Clinton, are on this ever-popular food stands long customer list.

Where to stayHotel Borg leads the way in the citys luxury market. Built in 1930, this Art Deco hotel is centrally located on the citys pretti est square. Centerhotel Thingholt off ers more modern rooms and an even more contemporary bar (check out the wall made from salmon scales). Center Hotel Arnarhvoll and the also aff ordable Hotel Cabin off er fewer frills but just as clean and spacious rooms.

ShoppingLaugavegur is Reykjaviks historical shopping strip and there, along with Sklavrust gur, is sti ll where youll fi nd some of the citys best shopping. Those yearning for more internati onal brands should head to the Kringlan Mall, but keep in mind that import and sales taxes can make big brand shopping expensive in Reykjavik. Sheep-skin slippers and fi sh-skin bags are two things that are defi nitely best bought in Reykjavik, and Icelandic Design Centre and Nostrum are two of the leading places to fi nd home-grown designers. Kolaporti Flea Market is another great place to shop for something unique; it sells many Icelandic specialti es along with the usual fl ea market items including clothes, records, and books.

Reykjavik like a localThough Blue Lagoon may be the mother of all baths, Reykjaviks city pools make for a much more local swimming experience. There are countless to choose from and most have something special to off er. Laugardalslaug is the citys largest pool and features a water slide and outdoor childrens pool, while svallalaug is one of the newer pools and an almost enti rely indoor complex. Located close to the city center, Vesturbjarlaug is the best pool for people watching and is rumored to be Bjorks favorite pool. Nauthlsvk, on the other hand, is a geothermal beach where the cold sea and hot geothermal water fuse together. There, the daring can jump the man-made sea walls to experience the great pleasure (or is it pain?) of cold-water swimming.

Q: How long have you been a Berlin guide?

I've been guiding in Berlin since 2009.

Q: What got you interested in being a guide?

Simply, the history of the city! Berlin is a fascinati ng place to research. I can very clearly remember my own elati on upon fi rst visiti ng and subsequently moving here, and it's a joy to help others discover the city and make the best of their trip.

As an occasional university teacher and actor, to begin working as a guide was something of a combinati on of a litt le pedagogy with a litt le performance. Above all, as a history addict, I'd say that there are so many lessons that we can learn from Berlin, and I'm delighted to discuss and explore those with visitors.

Q: What do you love most about Berlin?

In Berlin, you can go through the whole gamut of emoti ons and experiences in any one day. It's a place in which a wealth of culture, art, and music is more accessible than anywhere else I know, where history is tangible at each turn, and where the inhabitants (from every corner of the world) have the most astonishing stories.

Berlin blends fascinating people from all walks of life with a compelling, sometimes turbulent, history, all set in a fast-paced city always in search of improvement. From incredible museums that transport you back to the Berlin of World War II and the Cold War, to a constantly evolving food scene, to a thriving nightlife and a world-class public transportation system to get you around to these attractions Berlin invites you to come see how far its come since the Wall came down in 1989.

Of course, if youre going to see a city like Berlin, it helps to have the experts on your side, and thats where EURObreaks by Liberty Travel come in. EURObreaks pack all the excitement of Europes best cities into amazing three-night stays and give you everything youll need to make the most of your time. At the top of the list is your very own City Insider, a local expert who studies up on your interests and hobbies, meets you in your destination, and tells you all about the corners of the city that you wont want to miss out on (along with the best way to get there and the best times to go).

We talked to Berlin City Insider Finn Ballard to find out whats in store for you on your EURObreak to this fascinating capital city that can take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions with its history while impressing you with its incredible modern culture and impossibly strong spirit. Finn grew up in Northern Ireland and studied film and literature at the University of Warwick in England. He worked as a schoolteacher while writing his Ph.D. on German folklore and horror cinema, and he now works as a historical advisor for television and film productions, particularly those set during the Weimar era and Third Reich, in Berlin.

  • JANUARY MARCH 2016 | LIBERTY TRAVEL 39

There's a great love for freedom of expression here, and in the Berliners you'll fi nd an incredibly tenacious spirit and a curious mixture of self-deprecati ng humor about the city's shortcomings (a whole plethora of dry jokes about the recent notorious failure to construct a new airport, for instance), and a great deal of pride in what the city represents. Berlin is so much in fl ux I can't imagine ever seeing it devoid of constructi on sites that there's a constant sense of excitement here.

Q: What are some cant miss attractions in Berlin, and what are your recommendations for seeing them?

The cant-miss att racti ons are the classics: Museum Island, the Neue Wache war memorial, Unter den Linden, Bebelplatz, the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Jewish Memorial, site of Hitler's bunker, Potsdamer Platz, Hermann Goering's giganti c Luft waff e HQ, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Gendarmenmarkt.

Of the approximately 170 museums in the city, I'd recommend above all the German Historical Museum, Pergamon and Neues Museum, Topography of Terror, and the Gemaeldegalerie. Bear in mind that some museums and most galleries are closed on Mondays. The Jewish Museum is a good Monday trip, since it stays open unti l 10 p.m.

Book a ti me in advance to visit the Reichstag building with Norman Foster's spectacular cupola. Aft er the att racti ons in the city center, pursue Cold War history with a venture to see the Berlin Wall Memorial Centre, Stasi HQ, East Side Gallery, or Soviet Memorial in Treptower Park.

Away from Mitt e (the city center), it's always worth having a look at everyday Berlin life in another borough. I'd recommend Kreuzberg (with a stroll down Oranienstrasse, the heart of the Turkish quarter), or Schoeneberg with its infi nite bouti ques and restaurants.

Q: What are the best ways to get around the city if this is your first time there?

Berlin is a vast city, but easy to navigate. Most boroughs can be explored on foot you might also use the U-Bahn (metro) or the S-Bahn (overground train) to reach the boroughs fi rst. With 400 miles of bike paths, Berlin is a perfect city for cycling.

I don't know a single Berliner who drives in the city. The public transportati on is one of the cheapest and (usually) most e cient in Europe. While you're in the city, purchase a BVG transport pass for the A and B zones or a group pass if you're traveling in a group of three-to-fi ve people and you'll have unlimited access to the train, bus, and tram network unti l 3 a.m. the following day. You could consider buying an ABC pass, which costs slightly more, if you think you will travel further afi eld to Potsdam, for example, or to visit the Sachsenhausen Concentrati on Camp memorial, both of which are outside Berlin.

Q: What is the nightlife like, and what would you recommend for families, for young couples, and for groups of friends?

Berlin's nightlife is world-renowned for good reason: there's truly something for everyone. Berliners love to make use of public space in the warmer months, the candle-lit ambience at Schlachtensee (one of the numerous lakes fl anking the city) makes for a truly special evening, as does watching the last kites fl ying as the sun sets over Tempelhofer Feld (the former runways at Tempelhof Airport, now transformed into one of the biggest urban parks in the world).

Stadtbad Neukoelln, one of the most beauti ful swimming pools in Europe, stays open unti l 10:30 p.m., and there's also Badeschiff , the fl oati ng pool in the Spree, not far from the Club der Visionaere nightclub in Treptow.

There are dozens of concerts, from jazz to heavy metal, every evening, and there is an abundance of classical music venues. One of the city's most special summer insti tuti ons is the numerous open-air cinemas.

At the end of the year, kids will love the Christmas Markets my favorites are the Gendarmenmarkt and the rooft op market at 'Klunkerkranich' in Neukoelln.

Restaurants stay open late, and there are countless bars I'd recommend Prinzipal Kreuzberg or Stagger Lee; I also love the 'Green Door' speakeasy in Schoeneberg. For those who want to party like it's 1919, try Claerchens Ballhaus or Ballhaus Berlin for a taste of the legendary hedonism of the Weimar Republic. And for those looking for something a litt le more contemporary, there's always the world's number one nightclub, Berghain.

It's common to join a Saturday night party in Berlin on Sunday aft ernoon the city really never sleeps! Berlin is also proud to be one of the world's LGBT capitals, with a fantasti c nightlife scene centered in Schoeneberg and Kreuzberg.

And if you want to relax aft er all of that, the beauti ful Liquidrom spa stays open unti l 1 a.m. at weekends, and reopens at 9 a.m., which is just when many are leaving the nightclubs!

Q: What are some recommendations for getting an authentic Berlin dining experience? What about casual dining recommendations, or off-the-beaten-path suggestions?

New dining opportunities seem to appear in Berlin on a daily basis, from Michelin-star restaurants like Reinstoff to the city's infinite kebab stands. The most Berlin of all meals is the divisive currywurst you'll either love it or hate it. High on most lists is Curry 36, however, as a vegetarian, I'd recommend Bergmann Curry just a few minutes' walk away, with its tofu version and its truffle mayonnaise.

I also love Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg, with its Thursday night street-food market. On Saturdays, it's got to be the farmers market at Winterfeldtplatz find the rather gruff ladies selling 'raclette,' grilled cheese on French bread with plenty of herbs for an incomparable breakfast.

    Continued from previous page...

In the up-and-coming neighborhood of Neukoelln, I love Burrito Baby and Roamer's cafe; there's also the Italian restaurant La Perla Jonica in Schoeneberg, Felix Austria for some traditional Austro-Bavarian cooking, Ta Cabron for Mexican food; Papaya for delicious pad thai.

One of the most unlikely ti ps: Burgermeister is a burger bar in the former toilet cubicle of Schlesisches Tor U-Bahn stati on. I can only speak for the tofu burgers, which are incredible, but it's said to be the best in the city. And my favorite of all: Rosa Caleta in Kreuzberg, with the friendliest chefs who take great pride in their Jamaican twists on German cuisine. You'll never go hungry in Berlin.

On the banks of Dublins River Liff ey sits the citys top draw, and one of the most popular att racti ons in Europe. It wouldnt be considered a historical monument, a museum, or a cultural insti tuti on anywhere else but in Ireland, the Guinness Storehouse is part of the countrys lifeblood.

Built upon the land Arthur Guinness once leased for a term of 9,000 years (for an annual rent of just 45), the building features seven fl oors packed with the science and history of one of the worlds most famous beers all centered around an enormous pint glass-

shaped atrium. While you wont get to actually see the world-famous black stuff being brewed, this is a fascinati ng explorati on of the history, science, and, of course, taste of one of Irelands biggest exports.

On the ground fl oor, visitors get a step-by-step look at exactly what goes into the brewing process that creates the worlds most popular stout. On the fi rst fl oor, you can learn more about Arthur Guinness, the man behind the brand and its centuries of history, as well as just how Guinness gets shipped to over 150 countries. Upstairs, youll fi nd the Tasti ng Experience, which gets more senses than just taste involved. On the third fl oor is the history of Guinness adverti sements, which spans over 80 years.

Its on the fourth fl oor where the fun really begins, though, with the Guinness Academy, where you can learn to pour a perfect pint its an exact science (and also a bit of an art, as youll see the fi rst ti me you noti ce a bartender making a shamrock in the foam) that takes 119 seconds. If youd rather have someone else do the work of pouring, head for the Connoisseur Bar for a tasti ng experience that uses Guinness for food & drink alike. These tastes of Guinness conti nue on the fi ft h fl oor, in the Brewers Dining Hall, but the most iconic experience is to be found on the top fl oor of the Storehouse.

Ascending to the fi nal fl oor, youll fi nd yourself in the Gravity Bar, which looks out over the rooft ops of Dublin. With the 360-degree view, including helpful annotati ons and notes about famous buildings, historical sites, and even geographical features like the far-off Wicklow Mountains, its a great place to sip a perfect pint while enjoying a unique view and an experience as fundamentally Irish as Guinness itself.
