Help, Help, the Globolinks!

SCENE 1: A country road in a deserted landscapeEarth has been invaded by aliens from outer space! As a group of children are returning from spring vacation, their bus suddenly stops. They hear on the radio that the Globolinks are everywhere! Tony, the driver, honks the horn, which seems to keep the monsters from attacking the bus. The radio announcer confirms that the only effective weapon against the invaders is music.

Emily, one of the older children on the bus, is the only one who has faithfully taken her violin to practice during spring vacation. She bravely sets out for the school to enlist the help of her teachers in rescuing the stranded children. Her only defense is the violin.

SCENE 2: The dean’s office of St. Paul’s schoolDr. Stone, the dean of the school, is deeply concerned that the children have not yet returned from spring vacation. The school custodian, Timothy, is not able to console him, but does warn him that the irate music teacher, Madame Euterpova, is waiting to see him. She demands her wages and threatens to resign because none of the children have taken their instruments with them to practice during vacation. When Dr. Stone impatiently excuses her and lies down to try to rid himself of a terrible headache, a Globolink sneaks into his office and touches him. After ringing the

bell for help, he begins turning into a Globolink! When Madame Euterpova returns with the other teachers and discovers Dr. Stone’s condition, she summons the teachers to bring their musical instruments and follow her to rescue the children. Dr. Stone helplessly looks around the room and follows the teachers.

SCENE 3: The deserted country road When the teachers find the stranded bus, their jubilation is interrupted as they discover that Emily has set out alone to seek for help. After distributing the musical instruments to the children, Madame Euterpova asks Dr. Stone to use his “GESP ” (Globolink extra sensory perception) to lead them to Emily before his transformation to a Globolink is completed.

SCENE 4: A forest of steelThe Globolinks have changed everything that is green and living into cold, inanimate steel. In search of the school, Emily finds herself in the forest of steel and is being threatened by the Globolinks. Although his mutation is nearly finished, Dr. Stone arrives in time to save Emily from the attack. Just as his total transformation is complete, the teachers and children arrive and destroy the Globolinks and save the world. The power of music triumphs again.

Synopsis

Amahl and the Night Visitors

The humble cottage of Amahl, a crippled boy, and his widowed mother

Inspired by the appearance of a huge star, Amahl plays his flute. His mother, worried for his health, bids Amahl to come in, out of the cold night air. When he lingers, his mother loses patience and scolds him. Amahl, who has repeatedly told some very tall tales, reports that he has seen a star with a tail as big as a carriage. This is the last straw and his mother threatens him with punishment.

After they retire, there is a knock at the door. He tells his mother that there is a king at the door. She reprimands him for his lie and tells him to go to the door again. This time when he returns, he surprises his mother by telling her that there are two kings. After a sharp rebuke, he goes to the door again. This time, there are three. Angrily, the mother goes to the door herself to find that her son has indeed, told the truth. She invites the

kings to spend the night and sends Amahl to fetch the shepherds and their families. They provide gifts of food, spices, and perform one of their traditional dances for the kings’ enjoyment. After the shepherds are dismissed, the kings retire for the night.

Obsessed with the knowledge that even a handful of the kings’ gold would save her and Amahl from having to beg for a living, she takes a few coins. The page suddenly awakens and discovers her crime. Amahl rushes to her aid. King Melchior approaches the mother and assures her that the child they seek needs no gold and permits her to keep the money.

Awed by King Melchior’s explanation of the Messianic child, she returns the gold and apologizes for her inability to send a gift of her own. When Amahl steps forward to offer his crutch as a gift, he is miraculously healed. He begs his mother to let him go with the kings to present the crutch to the Christ child, himself.

As this year marks the 100th anniversary of Gian Carlo Menotti’s birth, BYU’s School of Music Opera Program celebrates two of his uniquely different operas. Amahl and the Night Visitors had its world premiere 60 years ago on December 24, 1951. It was the first opera commissioned specifically for television broadcast (NBC). Since that time it has become one of the most beloved and widely- performed works of all 20th-century American operas. This charming and timeless story depicts the visit of the Magi to a peasant woman and her crippled son.

Lesser known, Help, Help, the Globolinks! premiered in Hamburg, Germany, December 21, 1968. Together with Amahl and the Night Visitors, the double-bill proved to become a tradition. Though the work itself is a quirky caricature opera featuring Globolinks from outer space, the message carries a contemporary social statement of the value of music in school and community.

Menotti was a rare talent. Not only did he compose opera, he also wrote the libretti for his and one of Samuel Barber’s operas. He won the Pulitzer Prize for two of his works, The Consul and The Saint of Bleecker Street.

Another interesting facet of his versatile talent was that he not only enjoyed conducting many performances himself, but also staged them. It was on one of these occasions that I had the pleasure of meeting and working with him. In 1979 the University of Michigan engaged Menotti to direct Help, Help, the Globolinks! in which I was cast in the role of Timothy. Two days before the premiere, my seven year-old son, Todd attended the dress rehearsal not so much to see his father’s performance as to see those “scary monsters.” Before the beginning of the rehearsal, Mr. Menotti took Todd by the hand and gave him strict

Director’s Note

Lawrence Vincent, director

instruction to report anything that did not look right or scary.

After the rehearsal, before giving the singers feedback, he made his way straight to our son. “Well, Todd, did you see anything you didn’t like?” Menotti humbly asked. Breathlessly and with some trepidation, I awaited Todd’s critique. During one of the scenes, a member of the cast had accidently dropped her handkerchief. To my relief, Todd replied, “I didn’t like it when the lady lost her scarf.” Menotti smiled and with true sincerity said, “I’ll see that it doesn’t happen again.” Then he asked if the Globolinks had been scary enough. Todd nodded and Menotti patted his head and thanked him. Such was the tender, humble, and generous character of Gian Carlo Menotti.

One last mention of gratitude: to sing, stage-manage, costume, light, coordinate sound, build scenery, and provide orchestral accompaniment for a single opera in our fall season is a monumental effort. Two operas, one of which is so technically difficult, are next to impossible. Thanks must be given to all those who have worked together with incredible creativity to make this evening an enjoyable, as well as spiritual experience.□

Gian Carlo Menotti was born on July 7, 1911, in Cadegliano, Italy. At the age of seven, under the guidance of his mother, he began to compose songs. Four years later he wrote the words and music of his first opera, The Death of Pierrot. In 1923 he began his formal musical training at the Verdi Conservatory in Milan. Following the death of his father, his mother took him to the United States, where he was enrolled at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music. There he completed his musical studies, working in composition under Rosario Scalero.

His first mature work, the one-act opera buffa, Amelia Goes to the Ball, premiered in 1937, a success that led to a commission from the National Broadcasting Company to write an opera especially for radio, The Old Maid and the Thief, the first such commission ever given. His first ballet, Sebastian, followed in 1944, and for this he wrote the scenario as well as the score. After the premiere of his Piano Concerto in 1945, Menotti returned to opera with The Medium, shortly joined by The Telephone, both enjoying international success.

The Consul, Menotti’s first full-length work, won the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle award as the best musical play of 1954. By far Menotti’s best-known work is the Christmas classic Amahl and the Night Visitors, composed for NBC-TV in 1951. This beloved opera celebrated the 50th anniversary of its premiere in 2001, and continues to receive hundreds of performances annually.

Menotti writes the text to all his operas, the original language being English in every case, with the exception of Amelia Goes to the Ball, The Island God, and The Last Savage, which were first set to Italian words. Later operas, The Singing Child (1993) and Goya (1986), written for Plácido Domingo and were premiered by The Washington Opera. In the summer of 2004 Domingo reprised the role at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien. Menotti’s most recent vocal works are Jacob’s Prayer (1997), a commission from the American Choral Directors Association, Gloria, written as part of a composite Mass celebrating the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize, For the Death of Orpheus, with a premiere by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra led by Robert Shaw in November 1990, and Llama de Amor Viva, premiered in April 1991. A trio for the Verdehr Trio received its world premiere at the Spoleto Festival on Menotti’s 85th birthday in July 1996.

In addition to the numerous operatic works, Menotti has enriched the artistic world with ballets, including Errand into the Maze (in the 2005

Gian Carlo Menotti

1911–2007

repertory of the Martha Graham Dance Company), and The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore; Pastorale for Piano and Strings (1934); Poemetti, a suite of piano pieces for children (1937); The Hero (1952), a song on a text by Robert Horan; and Canti della Lontananza, a cycle of seven songs (1967). He also wrote the libretti to Samuel Barber’s operas Vanessa and A Hand of Bridge.

1958 saw the opening of Menotti’s own festival, the Festival of Two Worlds, in Spoleto, Italy. Devoted to the cultural collaboration of

Europe and America in a program embracing all the arts, the Spoleto Festival has gone on to be one of the most popular festivals in Europe. The festival literally became “of two worlds” in 1977 with the founding of Spoleto USA in Charleston, South Carolina, which he led until 1993 when he became director of the Rome Opera. Well into his 90s he continued to direct opera at Spoleto and elsewhere. His 1996 Spoleto production of Amahl was filmed for commercial release. During the 2005 –06 season The Consul was produced at Teatro Regio in Italy; performances in the 2004–05 season included productions at the Arizona Opera and in Zurich, Switzerland.

In 1984 Menotti was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor for lifetime achievement in the arts. He was chosen the 1991 “Musician of the Year” by Musical America, inaugurating worldwide tributes to the composer in honor of his 80th birthday. His music has been published by G. Schirmer since 1946.

At the age of 95, Menotti died February 1, 2007, in a hospital in Monte Carlo, Monaco, where he had a home. The biographical material about Gian-Carlo Menotti included in this program including the article by Paul Wittke are reprinted by arrangement with G. Schirmer, Inc.
