Mission & Goals Statement of the Department of AthleticsThe Georgetown University Department of Athletics, as part of a university with roots in the Jesuit tradition of education, commits itself to the comprehensive development of the student. The interdependence of the physical, emotional, mor-al and intellectual aspects of personal growth requires simultaneous and balanced focus. This objective does not imply that each facet of an individual’s psychological, social and academic growth is of equal importance. It does require that Georgetown provide the means and encour-agement for each person to develop according

to his or her own interests and abilities. This is especially true in athletics, whether at the recre-ational, intercollegiate, intramural or instructional level. In addition to physical development, the Department of Athletics promotes principles of character, development and sportsmanship within the framework of an abiding and broad-ened commitment to community. Accordingly, the Athletics Department is committed to, fosters and pursues the fair and equitable treatment of both men and women, and the provision of equitable access and opportunities for minority students and institutional personnel.

Anti-Discrimination PolicyIn accordance with the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the imple-menting regulations promulgated under each of these federal statutes, Georgetown University does not discriminate in its programs, activi-ties, or employment practices on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. The University’s compliance program under these statutes and regulations is supervised by Rosemary Kilkenny, Special Assistant to the President of Affirmative Action Programs. Her office is located in Room G-10, Darnall Hall, and her telephone number is (202) 687-4798.

Title IX And NCAA Peer ReviewThe Georgetown University Athletics Department has recently undergone two extensive reviews of its athletic programs: an audit by the Department of Education concerning Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and Georgetown’s inau-gural review under the NCAA’s new Athletics Certification program. The Department of Education has found Georgetown’s athletic programs to be in compliance with Title IX, and the University was certified by the NCAA in November of 1995.

NCAA Position on GamblingThe NCAA opposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering. Sports wagering has the poten-tial to undermine the integrity of sports contests and jeopardizes the welfare of student-athletes and the intercollegiate community. Sports wager-ing demeans the competition and competitors alike by a message that is contrary to the pur-poses and meaning of “sport.” Sports competition should be appreciated for the inherent benefits related to participation of student-athletes, coach-es and institutions in fair contests, not the amount of money wagered on the outcome of the competi-tion. For these reasons, the NCAA membership has adopted specific rules prohibiting athletics department staff members and student-athletes from engaging in gambling activities as they relate to intercollegiate or professional sporting events.

Hoya Spirit

Hoya Blue is Georgetown’s student-run Spirit Club charged with promoting all Georgetown sports and creating an exciting atmosphere at games. Hoya Blue hosts pre-game events, leads cheers in the student section, plans and organizes road trips and throws victory parties.

Every member of Hoya Blue wears t-shirts to the game that cry “I BLEED HOYA BLUE” and members chant the official cry “HOYA SAXA”...which is Latin for “What Rocks.”

You and me, we come from diff’rent worlds. New Jersey prep school boys and California girls. What we got in common, what’s our binding tie? We’re all such babies ‘cause the Hoyas make us cry.

Well there’s something we all do. We only Bleed Hoya Blue.

You and me, are in the Sea of Gray. I primped and preened all day to get my wig this way. I will cheer, I will sing. I just want to scream and shout, and help ‘em win that ring.

What else could I do? I only Bleed Hoya Blue. You can call me a fool, I only Bleed Hoya Blue.

Doing a little wishing, waiting on a dream. I say, “That would be great, with an on-campus gym” How’m I gonna get the money? Maybe win the lottery? Donate ten million bucks and when it’s built be named for me.

I can only hope I’m lucky. I only Bleed Hoya Blue. Ain’t Hibbert so cool? I only Bleed Hoya Blue.

Yeah, I’m painted up in blue, I only Bleed Hoya Blue. You can call me a fool, I only Bleed Hoya Blue.

Sometimes I wonder, hope it never ends. One day I’ll graduate, then reminisce with friends. Roadtrips to Philly, or the MCI I’m such a baby, yeah, the Hoyas make me cry

‘Cause there’s something I still do. I only Bleed Hoya Blue. You can call me a fool, I only Bleed Hoya Blue.

Yeah, I’m painted up in blue, I only Bleed Hoya Blue. I only Bleed Hoya Blue. I only Bleed Hoya Blue. I only Bleed Hoya Blue.

What Rocks?

Who is Jack?Georgetown’s mascot is Jack the

Bulldog. The name “Jack” and the breed of English Bulldog was formally adopted in 1962, after a long line of breeds “auditioned” for the position during the first half of the century. Georgetown was one of the first schools to employ a

“human mascot.” A familiar blue and grey costumed student appears at all major athletic and social events and is one of the most recognizable college mascots in the nation.

What is a Hoya? Many years ago, when all Georgetown

students were required to study Greek and Latin, the University’s teams were nicknamed “The Stonewalls” possibly after the early architecture on campus. It is also suggested that a student, using Greek and Latin terms, started the cheer “Hoya Saxa!” which translates into “What Rocks!” The name proved popular and the term “Hoyas” was eventually adopted for all Georgetown teams.

School ColorsBlue and gray were adopted as the

official school colors following the Civil War, to symbolize the reunification of the North and the South. The war had such a profound impact upon the University, which housed the Union Army as it moved south to occupy the surrounding area.

the only state-of-the-art arena in Washington, D.C. The building is also equipped with 110 luxury suites and the Acela Club restaurant which gives diners a bird’s-eye view of the action.

The Hoyas have their own permanent locker room at the MCI Center including coaches’ and trainers’ offices. Although the Hoyas use the on-campus practice facility of McDonough Arena, there is a full practice gym available at the MCI Center for the team’s use.

The Hoyas share their home with the Washington’s Wizards (NBA), Washington Capitals (NHL), Washington Mystics (WNBA), plus concerts, family shows and sporting events. The MCI Center also hosted the 2003 NBA All-Star weekend.

Georgetown holds a 63-30 mark (67.7% winning pecentage) in the building.

located in Yates Field House, the men’s basketball program has its own 800 square foot weight room. The mirrored space consists of nautilus machines, free weights and cardio equipment.

Recently added to the basketball facility are two new Academic Labs, which are easily accessible from the team’s locker room and weight rooms. The new state-of-the-art computer labs are utilized by the Academic Coordinator for study hall and as an area for team members to meet with tutors.

A timeline of the storied tradition of Georgetown Basketball highlights the outside of the men’s basketball offices, which are adjacent to the locker room and overlook the main practice court.

The men’s basketball training facility is located inside McDonough Gym, the former home of the Hoyas.

The complex includes a main gym, which received a new floor during the summer of 2003 and a facelift of Georgetown blue and gray this past summer. The gym is large enough to contain three individual training courts. In addition, the program has a private, auxiliary gym used for added practice space and specific workouts. Along with using the varsity weight room, now

Jordan is the official on-court product

sponsor of Georgetown Basketball.

The mission of Georgetown University’s strength and conditioning department is to provide a combination of strength and speed disciplines that will enable GU to develop the strongest, fastest and most explosive college ath-letes in the nation.

The Hoyas train out of the 4,700-square-foot weight room located in Yates Field House. Varsity athletes are trained by highly qualified strength and conditioning coaches in proper Olympic lifting technique along with speed, agility, core and power training. Student-athletes are given their own

sport-specific program along with an individualized program to fit their own specific needs.

Student-athletes undergo an athletic evaluation preformed by the strength and conditioning staff before stepping into the racks to see what their physical status is and what they need to improve on. A scoring scale is given, and the athlete works throughout the coming year to improve that score.

Georgetown’s strength and condi-tioning staff includes head coach Augie Maurelli, assistant Mike Hill and three volunteer coaches: Matt Domenyancic, Jordan Jarry and Dawon Dicks.

Machines25 lower- and upper-body machines; help to isolate specific joints and muscle groups to help prevent deviation as well as aiding in preventing injury

Speed, Agility, Flexibility & Power Track78 foot / 24 meter track, jump ropes and stretch bands

Free Weight Equipment11 Olympic lifting platforms, 11 multi upper-body bench systems, 11 trap bars, 10 brand-new Olympic Eleiko bars, dumbbells ranging from 1-140 pounds and four power block stations

Cardio EquipmentVarious cardio machines from ellipticals to rowing machines which enhance the athlete’s cardiovascular endurance, warm up the athlete before a lifting session and aid in rehabilitation

McDonough GymnasiumGeorgetown’s home for Hoya Athletics

since it opened in 1952, McDonough Gymnasium has housed the university’s athletics administration offices, sports medicine and training room facilities, var-sity locker rooms and coaches’ offices. Within the footprint of this historic brick and concrete structure, McDonough Arena is home to the women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The men’s basket-ball team practices and plays a limited number of contests at McDonough.

McDonough provides seating for 2,500 fans for basketball, and serves as a fre-quent campus site for university special events and select community events. In addition, McDonough is a frequent gath-ering place for alumni, parents and fans to share their common Georgetown spirit prior to and following their favorite Hoya athletic event.

The building has played host to one of President Dwight Eisenhower’s inau-gural balls, dignitaries of many nations, bishops, academics, many graduations, convocations, as well as concerts by Count Basie, the Who, the Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen.

The Gymnasium is named for Rev. Vincent S. McDonough, SJ, moderator of athletics from 1916-1928. His portrait adorns the visitors’ lobby where dozens of Georgetown’s national trophies and memorabilia are displayed.
