A&M UMC is a Stephen Ministry Congregation!

Feeling overwhelmed? You don’t have to face it alone. We have Stephen Ministers trained to help you when life takes a difficult turn. Stephen Ministers are specially trained laypersons equipped to listen carefully to how you are feeling. They are trained not to solve problems, but to listen and ask God to offer solutions. If you or someone you know might benefit from receiving a Stephen Minister, speak with one of A&M UMC's Stephen leaders or pastors to see if Stephen Ministry would be a good fit. You can also fill out the “Request a Stephen Minister Pew Card” available on Sunday mornings. If you are feeling a call to become a Stephen Minister I strongly encourage you to talk to one of our pastors or Stephen leaders. This ministry will transform your life. I guarantee it. Training to become a Stephen Minister begins in September. Contact Tom Bennett ([email protected]) or CJ ([email protected]) if you are interested.

As August progresses, you will hear more and more talk about new small groups starting. If you are not currently participating in a small group, I hope you will consider joining one of these groups.

The groups will begin by working through The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows by James Bryan Smith. It is the first of three books in The Apprentice Series which are written to be tools that help us to become more as Christ would have us be so that we might live more fully in the love and joy of God. Each week the book examines an aspect of God (God is good. God is loving. God is generous. God is trustworthy. God is holy) as well as some common misconceptions about God that hinder our ability to love and live for God. Each week also has a simple “soul training exercise” that helps create the ability, space, and awareness to experience God’s goodness and presence that is around us all the time. The soul training exercises aren’t complicated. They begin with seeking to sleep one night until you are fully rested. Other exercises include things like sitting quietly with God for five minutes, making a list of things you are thankful for, and reciting the 23rd Psalm.

The gifts of the small group are multiple. You certainly have a little more incentive to read and do the practices, and you have people who can model grace if you ever fail to do them. But even more, small groups offer the support that is so necessary for spiritual growth while allowing you get to know some people who also become friends. We have been running pilot groups during the summer. Several of these participants are considering leading groups throughout the week in the fall. Those going through the groups are saying wonderful things about them. When the sign-up sheets come out, I hope to see your name on one. Grace & Peace,

P.S. If you’d be interested in hosting a group in your home, please contact Anne Campbell-Smith. You don’t have to lead a group to host a group. Not all who lead can host, and not all who host have to lead. Use the gift you have.

Journeying Through Grief

Are you grieving the loss of a loved one? The death of someone we love can be one of the most difficult things we deal with in our lives. Our sadness can become so intense and our actions so unfamiliar, even to ourselves, that we wonder if we are going mad. I want to assure you that you are not alone and you are not going mad. A&M UMC wants to come alongside you as you journey through your grief. We are making a wonderful resource available to those who have lost someone they love, a book series called Journeying Through Grief. There are four small, easy to read books in this series each describing feelings that may surface around the time of loss. Many find reassurance knowing their experiences with grief are normal. If you are interested in receiving the Journeying Through Grief series, let CJ know [email protected].

Entering college can be scary. This is a challenging transition for many young people - we need your help connecting students to our local church family here at A&M UMC. One thing I consistently hear students say is, “This is more than a ministry, this is my home and these are my family.” You have become a family to hundreds of students. We need your help getting students connected to our local church family. September 4th at 7:30pm we are hosting Mark Swayze and Mark Fangue for a live concert w/ free pizza. We need the help of the entire congregation to make this a successful event!

Elijah Partners

“The greatest thing we can do, the one thing we must do, the one thing we have the privilege of doing, is to pray.” – Barby Parish Williams

From Elijah and Elisha to Paul and Timothy, the Bible speaks in numerous places to the importance of spiritual mentorship between generations. During the upcoming school year, we would like to create this opportunity for the junior high and high school students of A&M UMC in a unique way through the Elijah Partner Program. Elijah Partners are adults in our congregation who commit to praying for one youth by name for the entire school year. What makes this prayer ministry unique is that the Elijah Partner is anonymous to the youth. In the crazy, demanding life of our youth today it is nice to know someone (and they don’t know who!) is praying for them. Our goal is that every student in the youth group has an adult from this congregation praying for them year round, beginning in September and ending with a “revealing party” at the end of the school year. Being an Elijah Partner is open to any adult who would like to participate. For more information, email Taylor Jones at [email protected]. To sign up as an Elijah Partner now, fill out the forms found in the Welcome Areas or use the following link: https://amumcyouth.wufoo.com/forms/elijah-partner-sign-up/
